IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOIIDERS.

Specincation forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,069, dated January 11, 1876; application filed July 1, 1875.

To all rwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES P. BABGOCK, ot' Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make' and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica tion.

Thus, as the said screw is turned in either direction, the parts b and b are accordingly made to approach. each other, or allowed to recede, as required.

These parts, above enumerated in novel combination, constitute my invention.

The whole device'fis to be properly placed within the side of the window-frame, (the thumbpiece protruding, as illustrated in Fig.

1,) in such manner that the end of the step b will rest or bear against the outside edge of the outer sash, and the step b against the inside edge of the inner sash. Now, by simply loosening the screw 1,'thus relaxing the hold of the steps upon the sashes, the said sashes are allowed to slide easily up or down, as may be necessary; but when it is desired that they should be firmly fastened at a certain point, all that is necessary to do is to screw up the thumb-piece7 which operation causes the steps to gripe the sash similar to the gripe of a vise.

With this improvement it will readily be seen that one or both sashes may be held at any required point at the same time. The invention is durable, cheap,'fand .efective It is evident that the form or shape of the different parts may bek varied somewhat without effecting the substantial features of my mprovement.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the frame of a window, the improved fastener herein described, consisting essentially of the `metal roda, having the foot b and the threaded shaft d, the sleeve c, provided with the foot b', and the thumbscrew e, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
