HOISTING MACHINE.
.Application leilwSeptember 19, .1927. Serial No. 220,307.
This invention relates to hoisting inaclnnes, andv has reference more particularly to hoisting machines olf theucharacter eni- )lo ed` in bi'iildin(y oierations for raisin D 2D building` material to the `Hoor or floors of thev structure on which it is to be 1used.. One well-known type of: hoisting,` machine oit this character employs a` single hoisting drinn on which the intermediate portion oit a cable` is wound, the end port-ions of the `calole extending; over suitable guide pulleys on the supper-ting trame workolf the cages or buckets and connected to the latter so that as the drum is rotated the loaded bucket or cage is elevated and the empty bucket or cage is simultaneously lowered. `llflachines of this character eil'ect what `is known as counter halance'd operationnnd manifestly etlect a .savingl oi power over two independently op-` erated hoistingmachines' but such machines possess a disadvantage in that they can serve only one floor or level oit a building at atime. y
rl o serve differenttloors .oiz the building at the same time it has heretofore been necessary to employ `two independentlyoperating hoisting machines.
An importantobject oi' my present invention has been te provide ahoisting machine capable, through manipulation oi a few manually operated controls, etfunctioning);` either as a single hoisting' machine.operating on the cennterbalanced principle or as independent machines capable oi' operating` either of two lifts alone, or both at the same time and deliveringr the load of each at any desired level. ln carrying out the invention l employ a pair oi? drums or reels, in associationwith mechanism whereby both drums may be `geared together to` simultaneously rotate in opposite directions so that, with independent cables wound in the same direction thereon, one drinn vwill he hoistinga load while the other islonf'ering.; the empty litt, and vice versa, thns producing connterbalanced operation, or both drums may he operated independently to both raiseand lower their respective lifts and` deliver `the loads at any desired level. i i i My invention, its mode of operation, and the advantages inhering therein willhe readily nnderstood hy persons skilled in the art as the same becomes` better known through reference to the 'following detailed descriptien, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein I have illustrated a` practical and approved embodiment of the invention, and in which- Fig. l a top plan view, in partly diagrammatic form;
Fig. 2 is a side bottoni of Fig. l. y d
Referring to the drawings, l0 designates a foundation orbase plate on which are nimmted a pair ot parallel skelet-on side 'trames il and l2. Jonrnaled in suitable bearings on these side 'trames are parallel drum shafts lil and'lel. Loose on shaft 13 is a cahle winding drnn'l l5 and looseon shatt let a .similar cable win ding drumlt. Power from an electric motor7 gas eng-ine or any other power generator conventionally illustrated at il transn'iilted through a pinion 18, gear ll), cross shaft and. pinion 2l to a large `gear 22 which is keyed on shaft 11.3. The, drum l5, which is loose on shalt 13 is connected to or disconnected trom `gear 22 by a minimally controlled 'friction band clutch. .ineclranism indicated at 23, operated by a hand lever 3), with the structural details oit which the present invention is not concerned. The it'riction hand. clutch mechanisnrherein indicated is shown and described in Letters Patent to ill. A. Barker No. 1,05%666, dated March Ll, 1913, to which reference may he had for a description thereof. Fast on the other end o'll drum 15 is a larn'e gear 24e that continuously in mesh with a similar gear 25 .loose on shaft 14.-. Gear 22 drives a similar gear 2G fast on shalt 14 through an intermediate gear 27 (Fig. 2), whereby the gears and 26 always .rotate in the same direction. Drum 1G, loose on shalt .1.41, is connected to and disconnected from `gear `2G by a friction band clutch .inechanisnii 23 similar in all reA spectsto the friction band clutch mechanism 23, and operated by a hand lever 239,. The gear 25, which rnns loose on. shait lll, may he connected to and disconnected. 'from the drum 16 by a sliding,v clutch 28monnted on shaft 1.4i; outside the gear 25, said clutch having4 pins 2li entendine` through holes in the web ot gear 25 and. adapted to enter holes El() termed in the head of? drum 1G; said clutch. beingoperated by a hand lever 32 pivoted at 33 on a` bracket Bel i'nonnted on the side frame niember l2. lVhen clutch 28 is engaged so as to lock gear 25 to drum 1G, it may be locked in such position by a suitable pin passed through matingholes 35111111` 3G in the lever 32 and -a lixed segment arm 37.
elevation7 viewed from the til).
lll() attached` at to the frame base 10, andthe other end being attached to a short arm 41 fast on a rock-shaft 42 `ioiirnaled in the frame base. The two rock-shafts 42 aie actuated to apply the brakes by pedal levers 43, 43 fast thereon; Vand each rock-shaft 42 is iiiged in a direction to release the brake by a torsion spring 44-(Fig. 1), one end of which spring is anchored in a lug 45 on the frame base through which the rock-shaft passes, and the other end of which is anchored in a collar 46 on and adjustable aroun'dthe rock-shaft y to vary the 'tension of the'spring, said coll-.ir
being seeiiied in adjusted position by a setscrew 47. f 1 Y Assuming that it isjdesired to operate two hoists independently through independent.
- Thus, wh en workingon different levels,bydisengaging clutch 28 and manipulating clutches 23-and 23,the two drumscan be started and stopped independently to hoist their respective loads through the saine or different dis- Vtances.
To drive both drums simultaneously in opposite directions, as in coiinterbalanced work where one cage or bucket is being Yhoisted while the other is descending, clutch 28 is engaged, which locks gear 25 to drinn 16, and then by disengaging either clutch 23 or clutch 23 and engagingthe other, the two drums will turnY simultaneously in opposite direce tions.` If clutch'23 be engaged and clutch 23 disengaged, then driim16 is drivenfrom drinn 15 through gears 24, 25v and clutch 28. IfV
clutch 23l be engaged and clutch v2B disengaged, then drinn 15 is driven from drinn 16 through clutch 28 and gears 25, 24.- Thiis in suc-li coiinterbalaneed operation, -drinn 15 may run clockwise and drinn 16 countercl'oekwise, to hoist the loaded bucket or cage and lower the Yempty bucket or cage, and after rthe loaded bucket-or cage has been emptied I and the empty bucket or cage has been loaded,
the drinn 15 may be rotated eoiinterclockwise and the drinn 16 clockwise tolower the-then empty bucket. or cageand hoist the then loaded bucket or cage.
I claim- I f 1. In a'lioistingl machine, the'combination of aframe, a pair of parallel drinn shafts 'joiirn'aled Vin said frame, winding drums on said shafts, 'a gear train having clutch con- .y neotions to both of said drums at one end of gears on the respective drinn shaf s the latter through which said drinns may be krotated independently or simultaneously in the same direction, a second gear train having a fixed connection to one of said drums and a clutch connection to the other drinn at. the other end of rsaid drums through which said drums may be rotated in opposite directions, and means for driving said iirst-named gear train.
2. In a hoisting machine. the combination of a frame, parallel drinn shafts joiirnaled in said frame, winding drums loose on said shafts, a pair of gears on the respective drinn shafts, a transmission gear between said gears, independently operable clutch connections between the gears of said pair and the adjacent ends ofsaid drums, inlerineshing one of said Vintermeshing gears being fast with one of said drums and the other having a clutch connection to the other drinn, and a driving shaft geared tofone of said first-named pair of gears.
3. ln a hoisting machine, the combination of a frame. a drinn shaft journaled in said iframe, a winding drinn loose on said shaft, :i gear keyed on said shaft opposite one end of saiddriim, a clutch for connectingsaid gear to said drinn, a second gear fast on the other end of said drinn, a second drinn shaft journaled in said frame parallel with said firstnamed drinn shaft, a second drinn loose on said second drinn shaft, a third gear keyed on said second drinn shaft, a clutch for connecting said third gear to said ,second drinn, an idler gear between said iirst.-1iained gear and said third gear, a fourth gear loose on said second drinn shaft internieshing with said second gear, a clutch for connecting said fourth gear to said second d ruin, and means for driving said first-named gear.
