UNITED STATES WILLIAM I. WHEELER, OF SGOTTVILLE, ILLINOIS.
REPAIR NOSE FOR PLOWSHARES.
Application filed July 26,
This invention relates to a repair nose for plow shares and it" is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which may be employed with equal advantage in connection with the renosing of either a right-hand or left-hand share.
It is also an important object of the invention to provide a repair nose which is constructed and applied in a manner that saves the cutting-away of superfluous metal and the unnecessary labor for forming the cutting edge and also assuring the production of the cutting edge on the proper angle.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several parts of my improved repair nose for plow shares whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and ad vantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the acconnaanying drawing, wherein 2- Figure 1 is a View in plan of a repair nose constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in edge elevation of the same;
Figure 3 is a view in top plan showing my improved repair nose in applied position in connection with the right-hand share;
Figure i is a view in elevation from the land side of the structure, as illustrated in Figure 3.
My improved repair nose comprises a metallic body 1 of requisite dimensions and which is provided at one end portion with an angularly disposed extension 2, the body 1 and extension 2 initially being preferably co-planar to facilite production. The land side edge a of the body 1 is substantially straight from end to end, as is also the land side edge I) of the extension 2, while the outer or free end of the body 1 is disposed on a predetermined angle at 0, said angle being one which may be best determined by practice, but preferably approximately with respect to the land side edge a. It is also to be understood that this edge 0 is disposed inwardly of the body 1 from the land side edge a. The extension 2 is reduced in 1927; Serial No. 208,620.
width from its junction with thebody l to its outer end, the reduction being entirely at the side portion thereof remote from the land side edge I) and the portion of the ex tension immediately adjacent to the plate 1 1s preferably arcuate, asyat (Z, to a. point substantially midway the length of the extension 2, the remaining or outer portion of the extension being reduced in width gradually.
The body 1 and the extension2 have the portions thereof at their junction and at opposite sides providedthereacross with relatrvely Wide grooves or channels 3, the same being disposed preferably on an angle of 30, although the same rmay be changed in ac cordance with the desired inclination of the cutting edge for the point of the plow share. These grooves 3 are arranged one directly above the other and result therebetween in a septum 4 having a central portion of a thickness materially less than that of the adjacent portions of the body 1 and exten sion 2. It is to be noted that these grooves or channels 4 are substantially concave in cross section.
WVhen it is desired to renose a plow share, the extension 2 is turned back with respect to the body 1 in a direction depending whether or not a right-hand or a left-hand share is to be repaired, and when the extension 2 is returned the land side edge 5 of the extension is substantially parallel with the land side edge of the plate 1 as indicated in Figure 3 of the accompanyingdrawing. This flexing is effected along the septum 4, assuring the production of the desired cutting edge for the point of the share when renosed. After the extension 2 has been properly turned back and in applying the repair nose to the share, the forward portion of the side bar 5 of the share 6 is inserted within the slot or space afforded between the body 1 and the extension 2, whereupon the repair nose is welded, brazed or otherwise secured to the share 6 and the side bar 5. WVhen the extension 2 is first turned back, a slot or space is provided of material length and which will permit the insertion therein of the forward portion of the side bar irrespective of the extent of projection of such forward portion of the side bar with respect to the share 6. Should the forward portion of the bar 5 extend but aslight distance within such slot or opening, a filler may be inserted between the extension 2 and the body 1 in advance of said bar 5 or said portion of the I body 1 and extension'Q'in advance of said bar 5 may be hammered to effect the desired fitting. V V
From the foregoing description it is thought'to be obvious that a repair nose for;
plow shares constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly ;-well adapted: for use by reason of the convenience and limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed;
I claim 1-,
1'. As a new article of n1anufacture,a re pair nose for plow shares comprising a plate provided at one end portion with an angular extens1on,:ad acent end portions of the plate and extension being provided on the opposite faces thereof with relatively broad grooves substantially concaved in cross section, said grooves being disposed on .an incline from r the land side edge of the plate in a direction toward the end thereof remote from the extension, said grooves permitting the extension to be turned back with respectto either face of the plate, the land side edge of the extension being substantially parallel to the land side edge of the plate when the extension is returned. 7
2. As a new article of manufacture, a repair nose for plow shares comprising a plate 7 provided at one end portion with an angular extension, adjacent end portions of the plate and extension being provided on the opposite faces thereof with relatively broad grooves substantially concaved in cross section, said grooves being disposed on an incline from the land side edge of the plate in a direction toward the end thereof remote from the extension, said grooves permitting the extension to be turned back with respect to either face of the plate, the land side edge of the extension being substantially parallel to the land side edge of the plate when the extension is returned, the end edge of the plate remote form the extension being disposed on an incline inwardly of the plate from the land side edge. 7
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
WILLIAM I. W'HEELER.
