DISPENSING PAPER HOLDER Filed Dec. 10, 1926 Zhzzrfi imp Patented May 21, 1929.-
PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR B. RAPP, F EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
DISPENSING-PAPER HOLDER.
Application filed December 10, 1926. Serial No. 153,764.
This invention relates to holders for rolled paper of a type designed for protecting the roll of paper and for facilitating the dispensing of the paper from the roll.
' The general object of the invention is the provision of a device of the sort described which may be manufactured very economically and which will be effective to protect the paper against soiling, yet facilitate its removal from the roll in sections of any desired length.
Another objectis the provision of a device of the sort described which is of very compact construction, of neat appearance, and which facilitates recharging.
A further obj ect is the provision of a device of the sort described which will hold the paper ready for dispensing at all times and prevent unwinding or loosening of the roll.
Other and further objects Wlll be pointed out or indicated hereinafter or will be apparent upon an understanding of the invention or its employment in" use.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification I illustrate one form in which the invention may be embodied, but it is to be understood that the invention as claimed is not to be construed as limited to the particular construction and detail herein shown and described for purpose of exemplification.
- In said drawing,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device as installed for use;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation;
and i Fig. 3 is a similar transverse section of a modified form. I
The nature of the invention will be most quickly ascertained by reference to this illus- 49 trative construction.
The device illustrated comprises a holder or casing, which can be most conveniently constructed of sheet metal by stamping and bendin operations. It is formed as an integral Elank with a front wall portion 10, a top portion 11, a bottom portion 12, end portions 13, tearing rule portion 14, connecting members 15 and supporting cars 16. The top and bottom portions 11 and 12 are bent backwardly from the front wall portion 10 on parallel lines of bend 10, so that their rearward margins lie in approximately the same plane, and the end portions 13 are bent rear- Wardly from the front Wall portion 10 on lines of bend 10 in parallel relationship with each 5 other and so that their rearward margins-lie in approximately the plane just mentioned. The connecting members 15 are bent over from the top and bottom portions into contacting relationship with the end portions 13, a and suitably secured thereto as by soldering. The rule portion 14; is bent on a line 12 from the bottom portion 12 so as to depend therefrom slightly in front of the plane of the rear margins of the end and top portions. The 05 supporting ears 16 extend laterally from the ends of the rule portion 14. and the rear margin of the end portions 13, those on the rule portion being slightly ofi'set rearwardly at 14 so that they will lie in substantially the same plane as those extending from the end portions 13. The supporting ears are provided with bayonet slots 16 having the contracted portion directed upwardly. The device is a mounted against the plane surface of a suitable supporting structure 17, such as a wall, by means of headed screws 18 or the like seated in the supporting element and arranged for engagement in the bayonet slots 16. The device may be disengaged from this mount- 0 ing by sliding it upwardly on the screws 18 to disengage the contracted portions of the bayonet slots from them and permit the heads of the screws to pass through the enlarged portions of the slots. The rule portion 14 is $5 provided with an aperture 14 of sufiicient' size to permit the introduction of the tip of a finger therethrough.
' rom the foregoing it will be observed, particularly by reference to Fig. 2, that the no device provides a housing closed on five sides and open at the rear, which side is also closed by the supporting element 17 when the device is mounted thereon. As above described, the rule portion 14 and the rearward margin of the bottom wall 12 being slightly spaced from the supporting surface to afford a downwardly opening slot S through which the paper strip may be Withdrawn from the easing. The device is charged, while dismounted from its support, by placing therein a-roll R of paper, with the loose or outer end of the rolled strip extending as a tangent from the rearward surface portion of the roll toward the rule. This end is drawn across the rule so as to project beyond the lower margin thereof, and the device is then mounted on the supporting members in the manner above described. When so mounted, the roll is com letely housed and supported in contact with the bottom wall 12 and the surface of the support 17. Sections of paper may be removed from the roll by drawing the free end downwardly to the desired length and then tearing the withdrawn section across the width of the strip against the margin of the rule 14. It will be observed that the sloping arrangement of the bottom wall 12 causes the roll to be held by gravity against the supporting element 17, even as the diameter of the roll is decreased by withdrawal of portions of the strip. The contact of the roll against the supporting element and against the bottom 12 of the housing prevents the unwinding or loosening of the paper in the roll and retains the end, after a section has "been torn off, in position behind the rule 14 where it may be engaged by a finger introduced through the aperture 14", whereby the end of the strip may be drawn down to a suiiicient extent to permit its being grasped below the lower margin of the rule.
lnthe modification illustrated in Fig. 3, the casing is provided with a back closure portion 19 which has hinged connection at 19 with tho rearward margin of the top portion 11, same serving to close the open rearward side of the housing. lVith this modification, the device may be constructed in other particulars as above described, and mounted on a support in the same fashion.
The device is of particular utility for the holding of paratlincd paper or the like used for wrapping food commodities, such as meats or pastries, both by virtue of the therough protection which itaifords to the roll of paper and by virtue of the ease with which the paper is dispensed and the device charged. It is also effective in the elimination of waste not only because of the protection which it affords the paper, but also because of the effective manner in which it holds the roll against overrunning when some of the paper is being withdrawn and against unwinding when the end of the strip is left free after a section has been torn off.
