IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 169,953, dated November 16, 1875; application filed September 1, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OSEPH P. BUOKING- HAM, 0t Ohicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Gases; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact descrip-.-

tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in paper foldingboxes and it consists in the peculiar manner of cutting the blanks from' which the boxes are formed, so that when "bent into shape the corners will be locked together, and there will be a double thickness at each corner of the box for the purpose of first two slits at each end are out two other shorter slits, e, that reach only halfway to the line 0, and corresponding with these short slits, there are made, at each end, two other slits, d, which extend from the long slits 11 directly at right angles. At the outer corners of the part g, that forms thecover of the box, are cut away the square pieces h, and with the exception of these small pieces, there is no other waste in cutting out the blanks.

In forming the box into shape, the sides are all turned up, and then the short slits are made to interlock with each other at each corner, so

as to hold the sides in position. These corners interlocking in this mannerform a double thickness at each one, thereby strengthening and bracing thebox in its weakest places.

These boxes are especiallyintended for holding fine articles of clot-hing, and other such things as are made up by merchant tailors and milliners, though they are also adapted for other uses also.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- .A blank for folding boxes, having the slits b reaching to the line upon which the ,box is folded, the short slits 6 running parallel with the slits b, and slits 61 running at right angles to the slits b and 0, whereby, when the box is bent into shape, the corners may be locked together, substantially as shown anddescribed. 1
