With the construction as described, the various elements may be easily and quickly assembled first by assembling the plunger as-. sembly consisting of the plunger M, bifurcated plunger shank O pinned to the reduced shank M of the plunger, the coil spring S and the abutment P, the cross head being preferably the last element inserted and secured in place. \Vith this assembly the spring yieldably holds the abutment member from accidental disengagement by reason of fitting over the reduced forward end portion thereof and also by reason of forcing this abutment member againstthe cross head. The plunger assembly is then placed within the false bar rel A with theabutment member P extending vertically and depending through the slot A extending longitudinally of the rear portion of the false barrel. The trigger Q, is socured to the frame G as by means of the pivot pin and the spring R is secured in a bore in the stock L after which the frame may be mounted upon and secured to the stock with the spring properly engaging the lugs Qf upon the trigger. The lever J is then secured to the frame by means of the-pin J This false barrel with the plunger assembly is next carried into the frame G. Upon carrying the false barrel and plunger assembly into the 7 frame G the ends J of the lever J will clear the lower edge of the cross head O when the lever is in its normal position and this end comes into contact with the cammed end sur face P of the spring abutment P. To more readily'continue the inward movement of the 'false barrel into the frame the lever is then swung to engage the cross head 0 and release the compression of the coil spring S at the same time drawing the false barrel inward to permit the insertion of the pin A through the lower front portion of the frame and the notch F of the reinforcement strip D secured to the false barrel.
In operation when the lever J is moved forward from its normal position adjacent the stock the end J thereof engaging the cross head O will carry the plunger rearward until the sear Q on the trigger Q, engages the cross head The lever is then pulled back to a position against the stock and in doing so forces theabutment member P forward. This abutment is guided during such movement by the concave segments forming the furcations O At the completion" of the movement of the lever its engagement with the cammed end surface P is within the angle of friction thereby holding the parts in this position. The pulling ofthe trigger Q releases the sear Q from the cross head 0 and permits the discharge of the gun by reason of the plunger moving forward. This plunger is limited. in its forward movement by coming into contact with the plunger abutment B so that the cross head 0 cannot come into contact with the spring abutment P to damage the gun. V
The advantages of my improvement are, first, the simplicity and low cost of construction; second, ease in assembling; th1rd, reduced power required for the compress on of the plunger actuating spring. In addltion to these, the most important advantage is that there is no possibility of pinching the hand or fingers between the lever and stock or lever and barrel since the reaction of the spring is in the opposite direction;
What I claim as my invention 1s: Y
1. In a gun, the combination witlra barrel, of a plunger or piston therein, a bifurcated plunger shank extending rearward therefrom and having across head or hearing at its rear end, a spring sleeved on said shank, a spring abutment for engaging the rear end of said spring slidable between the furcations'of the shank and having a reduced portion extending nto the rear portion of said spring and a lever having its end between sald cross head and spring abutment adapted to move the whole plunger assembly rearward to engage said cross head with the sear and to move the spring abutment forward to compress the spring.
2. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a plunger or piston therein, a bifurcated plunger shank having a cross head or hearing at its rear end, a spring sleeved on said shank, a spring abutment between the furcations of said shank and slidably engaging the same to be guided thereby, the said spring being arranged to maintain the said. abutment in place, aframe to which said barrel is secured, a lever fulerumed in said frame hav ing its end inserted between said cross head and spring abutment, the latter being so fashioned as to be within the angle of friction when the lever is in its normal position.
3. In a gun, the combination with a stock,
of a. frame, a lever fulcrumed on said frame and normally lying adjacent tosaid stock, a barrel removably engaging said frame, a
plunger in said barrel, a bifurcated plunger shank extending rearward therefrom, a spring sleeved on said shank, a spring abutment slidably engaging said shank and having a bearmg portion with whichthe inner end of said lever is engaged, the said plunger,-plunger shank, spring and spring abutment being removable as a unit from the said barrel, an opposed bearing on said shank forsaid lever through which said plunger, spring and abutment may be moved rearward, a scar for engaging said opposed hearing when in its rear position whereby it is held from'movement during the forward movement of'saidspring abutment under the actuation of said lever,
and a trigger for releasingsaid sear.
4:, In a gun, the combination with a stock on said frame normally lying adjacent to said stock and having its inner end projecting within the frame, a barrel removably engaging said frame, a plunger within said barrel, a rearwardly extending plunger shank having a bearing for engaging said lever, a spring sleeved upon said shank, a. spring abutment slidably engaging said shank and provided with an opposed bearing for said lever, thesaid spring abutment being maintained in engagement with the said shank by thesaid spring, a trigger pivotally engaging said frame, and a. sear on said trigger With which the bearing on said shank is engaged when moved rearward by said lever. i
5. In a gun, the combination witha stock and a barrel, of a frame formed from a sheet metal blank bent into a U-shaped section with inwardly extending abutting flanges in its forward portion for embracing said bcl-I'- rel and depending spaced flanges in its central portion, a lever fulcrumed' to' said dependingspaced flanges andhaving its inner end projecting within the frame, a spring plunger mechanism operatively engaging said lever and means including a wedgeshaped member having a transverse-groove carried by the barrel and a pin in'sertable through the said frame for detachab-ly locking said barrel and frame to each other.

and a sear for engaging said opposed bearing when said plunger assembly is moved rearward by said lever whereby the forward movement of said spring abutment by said lever will compress the spring.
7 In a gun, the combination with a barrel,
of a plunger or piston therein, a-plunger shank extending rearward from said plunger and having a bearing at its rear end, a spring sleeved on said shank, a spring abut-ment for engaging the rear endof said spring guided by said shank and having a portion surrounded by said spring and a lever having an end between said bearing and spring abutment adapted to move the whole plunger assembly rearward to engage said bearing with the sear of the gun and to move said spring abutment forward to compress the spring.
8. In a gun, the combination with a barrel, of a plunger or piston therein, a plunger shank extending rearward therefrom, a
spring sleeved on said shank and engageable with said plunger-or piston, a spring abutment for engaging the rear end of said spring having a portion extending into the spring and means for moving said plunger shank rearward to engage the same with the sear of the gun and to move the spring abutment forward to compress the spring.
9. In anair gun, the combination with a barrel, of a plunger therein, a slotted plunger shank extending rearwardly therefrom, a spring sleeved on said shank and engageable with said plunger, 2. spring abutment for engaging the rear end of said spring slidable in the slot of said shank and having a reduced portion surrounded by the rear convolutions of said spring, and means for moving the Whole plunger assembly rearward to engage the rear end of said shank With the sear and to move the spring abutment forward to compress the spring.
