To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, EARL V. SHUE, a c1t1- zen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and ueful Improvements in Air-Guns, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to air guns and has for its object to improve upon details of construction whereby an air gun may be strong and durable without becoming expensive to manufacture and whereby the parts may be rendered more efficient in their operation.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide an air gun with a shot magazine and.
loader of novel construction which will permit of the magazine tube being rolled from plug to be automatically locked in its normal position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a breech block rolled from sheet metal into tubular form and being of a thickness prove upon details of construction gener-' ally.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the air gun as here in claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in the different views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an air gun constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View thereof; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view thereof on the plane of line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the connecting means between the breech and stock; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view on the plane of line G6 of Fig. 2 showing the loading plug; Fig. 7 is a detail view showing the loading plug in position for receiving a shot from the magazine and also showing the rear sight; Fig. 8 is a detail view of the magazine; Fig. 9 is a plan view of the blank .formed; and, Fig. 12 is an end view of the breech block.
n these drawings 15 indicates the gun sto k which is provided with check plates 16 at its forward end as usual between which is pivotally mounted a trigger guard plate 17 on a pivot bolt 18. A plunger cylinder 19 is carried by the trigger guard plate and has an opening through which the detent 20 projects to engage the hook 21 of the plunger 22. The detent may be drawn from engagement with the hook 21 by the spring pressed trigger 23, said trigger and detent having knuckle joints with each other and with the trigger guard plate 17 so as to form a toggle. The plunger 22 is pressed forwardly by a strong coil s ring 24 contained within the plunger cylin er 19 and hearing at its rear end on a tubular breech block 25 which is firmly held within the cylinder and is of a tubular shape being rolled into form from a blank of the shape shown in F ig; 11 having the slot 26 through which the detent projects and a notch 27 to receive the edge of the trigger guard late.
The hook 2]. of t e plunger travels the length of a wire loop 28 which is connected at its ends to a pin 29 connecting the side cheeks 16 and when the gun is broken by swinging the stock on the pivot pin 18 the said loop 28 draws the hook back until it is engaged by the detent 20 to cock the gun. The stock is returned to its normal position where it is held by spring ridges 30 on the cheek plates engaging similar ridges 31 on lates 32 which form the connecting means etween the cylinder and the trigger guard plate.
At the forward end of the cylinder it has a metal plug 33 threaded within it and threaded concentrically within this plug 33 is the barrel 34 preferably with a slightly tapering bore. A loading plug 35 is slidably mounted through the plug 33 and the carrying it to the barrel, the sliding moveof a tube bent from a blank of sheet metal shown in Fig. 9, one end portion being closed to complete the cylindrical formation andthe other portion having its edges spaced apart to form a slot between them through which the outstanding arm 38 of a follower 39 is adapted to pass. A coil spring ll) is contained within the closed portion of the magazine and bears at one end on the follo er 39 and at the other end on an ear 41 which closes the end of the tube and forms the means for attachment of the magazine to the barrel by having a screw 42 passing therethrough. Notches 43 are formed on the blank which stand opposite each other when the blank is rolled into tubular form and produce a circular opening through which shot may he introduced.
The sides of the blank are also provided with shoulders at which give to the slot an angular formation at its end to permit of the arm 38 of the follower being turned after the spring 40 is compressed and t us hold the follower beyond the opening during the charging of the magazine. The other end of the slot is closed by a projection 45 on the blank which turns into a recess 46 at the opposite edge thereof and this end of the magazine fits within the shouldered opening in the plug 33 through which the shot may pass into the eopening 36 of the loading plug 35. When the magazine has been char ed with shot the follower is turned out o engagement with the shoulder at the end of the slot and under the action of its spring 40 it presses the row of shot-along the magazine tube causing the end shot to enter the opening 36 of the loading plug when said plug isin its lower position shown in Fig. 7. A forward movement of the loading p'lu brings this opening 36 into register with t e barrel and at the same time a notch 47 in the loading plug is engaged by the next shot and under the pressure of spring 40 it serves to look the loading plug in its upper position yieldingly. The same locking efiect is produced when all of the shot have been fed from the magazine by the end of follower 39 which is rounded to enter the recess 4:7 in the same manner as with the shot.
The rear sight i8 is desirably made integral with the cylinder the latter being preferably of seamless tubing and having the sight out at the end thereof and punched and bent up therefrom and havin the surplus metal cut away so as to ma e a neat fitting connection with the side cheeks 16.
in operation the gun is cooked by swinging the stock on a pivotal pin 18 and causing moaaoe the loop 28 to draw the hook 21 against the action of spring 24 until it is engaged by detent 20 and then'returning the stock to its normal position. This has caused the plunger 22 to be drawn to the position shown in m Fig. 2. Then the gun is loaded by drawing the loading plug 35 downwardly to receive a shot from the magazine in its opening 36 and returning it to its upper position where it is held by the next shot or the follower itself engaging the recess 47. In its upper position the loading plug 35 has its opening 36 in register with the bore of the barrel and upon the trigger being pulled to release the hook from the detent the spring 24: forces the plunger 22 forwardly and compresses the air within the cylinder 19 to forcibly eject the shot through the barrel.
By means of the improved features of construction constituting this invention the air gun is made strong and durable without liability to breakage or wear and still the expense of manufacture is low because of most parts being formed of sheet metal stampings.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. in an air gun, a magazine comprising a sheet metal tube formed of a blank of sheet metal bent into tubular form with its edges 95 spaced apart to form a slot between them, there being notches in opposite edges of the blank to register with each other to form an opening to receive a shot, and there being shoulders on the opposite edges of the blank 31% which when the blank is bent to the tubular form produce a lateral extension of the slot, a follower fitting within the tube, an arm on the follower traveling through the slot and adapted to engage the lateral extension of the slot, an car on one end of the blank bent to close the end of the tube, and a spring confined within the tube and hearing at one end against the ear and at the other end against the follower.
2. In an air gun provided with a barrel, a magazine a loading plug slidably mounted across the barrel and the magazine and pro.- vided with an opening adapted to register with the magazine for receiving a shot there- 115 from when in one position and adapted to register with the barrel in another position, said loading plug being provided with a notch to be engaged by the end shot of the magazine for holding it in the last named 12m position, and a spring pressed follower in the magazine bearing on the shot.
3. An air gun, comprising a plunger 0 linder, a plunger mounted therein, a hoo on the plunger, a spring within the cylinder 1% spring bearing thereagainst and adapted to have the hook pass therethrough, there being a notch in the rear end of the spring abutment, a tri ger guard plate connects with the cylin er and fittlng within the notch, there beinr a slot in the spring abutment and the cylinder, and a trigger-operated detent passing through the said slot and engaging the hook.
4. In an air gun, a magazine comprising a sheet metal tube formed of a blank of sheet metal bent into tubular form with its edges spaced apart to form a slot between them, there being notches on opposite edges of the blank to register with each other to form an opening to receive shot, and there being shoulders on the opposite edges of the blank which, when the blank is bent to the tabular form, produce a lateral extension of the slot, a follower fitting within the tube, an arm on the follower travelin through the slot and adapted to be engage in the lateral extension of the slot, a sprlng seat at one end of the tube, and a spring confined within the tube and bearing at one end against the spring seat and at the other end a ainst the follower.
5. 11 an air gun provided with a barrel, a magazine, a loading plug slidably mounted across the barrel and the magazine and provided with an openin adapted to register with the magazine or receiving a shot therefrom when in one position and adapted to register with the barrel in another position, said loading plug being provided with a notch to be enga ed by the end shot in the magazine for hol ing it in the last named position, and a spring pressed follower in the magazine bearing on the shot and having a rounded end to en age the notch of the loading lug for holding it in the position in which its opening registers with the barrel when the last shot is contained therein.
