This invention relates to carding engines and is more especially concerned with the cylinder or swift and the flats or workers of carding engines and with the clothing for the same.
According to the present invention the cylinder or swift is provided with a clothing or carding surface comprising straight, ri id and pointed teeth on a metal wire or strip-like foundation and is used in conjunction with 'flats (or workers or similar rollers) provided with a clothing or carding surface having flexible or resilient teeth such as are provided in the ordinary card clothing comprising a leather or fabric foundation with wires or staples inset therein in such manner and of such character as to be flexible or resilient and capable of yielding when meeting with resistance as in the carding operation. The sald straight, rigid and pointed teeth of the clothing or carding surface on the cylinder or swift ton cardingengine with the cylinder or dill ' flexible teeth as provided on the flat swift and the flats arranged in the usual manner but provided with the difl'erent types of clothing or carding surfaces according to the present inventionv Figure 2 is an enlar ed view showing one of the flats and part 0 the cylinder or swift with the difl'erent carding surfaces.
Figure 3 illustrates a worker or similar roller provided with the clothing having flexible or resilient teeth in conjunction with. part of the cylinder or swift provided with the clothing having straight, rigid and pointed teeth. 1
Figure 4 illustrates a side view on-an enlarged scale of the straight, rigid and pointed teeth on the wire like foundation in conjunction vwith the clothing comprising the or worker. 1
- Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along part of the cylinder or swift and showing more particularly the arrangement thereon of thestraighh rigid or pointed th on the wire-like foundation.
lln the 'said drawings, A. represents the cylinder or swift. FF indicate a series of to carding flats arranged to travel in the usual manner in relation to the cylinder or swift.
f) represents a. worker or similar roller such as is used in a wool carding engine arranged in the usual manner in relation to the cylinder or swift A. The clothing for the cylinder or swlft A in both the examples illustrated comprises the wire orstrip-like foundation D on which the-straight, rigid and pointed teeth D are formed or provided. llhe said wire-like formation 1D with the teeth D is adapted to be wound or placed around the cylinder or swift in any ap ropriate manner to provide the carding sur ace of which the teeth are quite rigid or non-resilient and are rate the circumferential rows or convolutions so gure 5. The cardof the teeth as shown in Fi ing surface or clothing for the flats B as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and for the workers U as shown in Figure 3 may be of the usual type comprising a flexible foundation of rubher 1E and fabric F and flexible or resilient teeth E which are shown more particularly in Figure 4!: may be bent or knee shaped. l'leferring more particularly to the example shown in Figure 1., the cylinder or swift A no and the flats 15 having the .diflerent clothings as shown more particularly in Figures 2 and 4 are mounted to operate as is usual in cotton carding engines and this combination of rigid teeth D on the cylinder or swift A and the flexible or resilient teeth F on the flats B enables improved carding to be eflected com.- pared with that produced when both the cylinder or swift and the flats are clothed with the usual form of card clothing having we the flexible or resilient teeth. 'lfhe rigid teeth l) on the cylinder or swift grip or hold the textile fabrics more satisfactorily than do the flexible or resilient teeth when such are used on the cylinder or swift whilst the flexible or resilient teeth F on the flats B effect an efficient but light brushing action for combing or straightening out the fibres whilst the latter are firmly held by the rigid teeth D on the cylinder or swift. llhe flexno ible or resilient teeth F of the clothing on the flats take up as a brush would the impurities,
- said teeth also tend to allow the impurities to seeds, neps, etc., which become embedded in the flat stripping as is well known, and the pass through the card without damage to the rigid toothed clothing on the cylinder or swift. The operation performed by the cylinder or swift and the flats clothed in the manner described is similar to the old hand carding process wherein the fibres were held firmly in one hand and the loose ends brushed or combed with a flexible piece of card or comb. The effect produced by the combination of the different clothings on the cylinder and flats according to this invention cannot be obtained in .a carding engine where the cylinder or swift/is covered with the clothing having flexible or resilient teeth and is used in conjunction with flats having flexible or resilient teeth for the reason that the fibres are not securel held by the flexible or resili-' ent teeth on the cylinder or sw'ft so that they are constantly slipping from the flexible or resilient teeth of the cylinder to the flexeffected with the additional advantage that there is less waste produced than is the case when both the cylinder or swift and the flats are provided with the resilient or toothed clothing wherein slipping'of the fibres from the teeth of the cylinder to the teeth of the flats and vice versa is responsible for much waste. We may provide in conjunction with the improved combination according to this invention a dofi'er F which may be clothed with straight, ri id and pointed teeth to assist in automation l stri ping the cylinder during worki but t e dofl'er may be clothed or covere with the ordinary flexible or resilient teeth. Althou h the invention is especially applicable to tie carding of cotton, where carding flats are used, it can of course be used in connection with the carding of wool or other materials in which rollers or workers are used instead of flats and in this case the workers are clothed with the clothing havin the flexible or resilient teeth E on the foun ation E, E see Figures 3 and 4 for co-o crating with the rigid or non-resilient teeth of the cloth ng on the cylinder or swift. The advanta es above referred to in describing the invention in relation to the combination of the flats and cylinder clothed as aforesaid for cotton cardin are obtainable in a wool carding machine w erein the workers are provided with the resilient teeth for co-operatin with the rigid teeth on the clothing of the cylinder or swift.
' What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a cardin machine, the combination with flats or wor ers provided with a clothing comprising resilient teeth, of a swift clothed with a clothing having straight, rigid and pointed teeth.
2. In a cardin machine, the combination with flats or workers provided with a clothing comprising resilient teeth, of a swift clothed with a clothing in a, form of a wire which is wound around the swift and is provided with straight, rigid and pointed teeth.
