UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SUITE, OF MULLEN, NEBRASKA, .ASSIGNOR TO ALICE B. PAYNE.
DISHWASHER.
Application filed March 28, 1927. Serial No. 177,?88.
This invention relates to dish washing machines and provides a device which is eiiicient for the purpose intended and which is rapid and convenient in operation and readlly accessible for cleaning, replacement or other desired purpose.
lVhile the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements the design may be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dish washing machine embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical, transverse sectional view thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the machine, the cover being omitted.
Figure 4 is a vertical, central longitudinal sectional view of the machine.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The machine comprises a. box shaped cabinet 1 which, for convenience, is mounted upon casters for ready movement from one place to another. A cover 2 closes the top of the cabinet and may be hinged or otherwise connected thereto. Access tothe interior of the cabinet is made possible through openings formed in the front thereof, and which are normally closed by means of doors 3. A rack or holder 4 is applied to the inner side of each of the doors 3 and is adapted to receive soap, towels, or other articles. A partition 5 is located within the cabinet and is attached to the enclosing walls thereof, and is depressed between its longitudinal edges, as indicated most clearly in Figure 2. The longitudinal edge ortions of the partition 5 are attached to t e front and back walls of the cabinet at a point above the openings closed by means of the doors 3, and this partition forms a lower compartment 6 and an upper compartment 7. The lower compartment 6 may be utilized for storing sundry articles whereas the u per compartment 7 contains the dish was A drain cock 10 is applied to an end of the cabinet and communicates with the lowest point of the compartment 7, whereby to draw off the liquid contents.
A slosh wheel is provided for each of the troughs 9 to splash and throw the water upwardly during the operation of the machine. Each of the slosh wheels comprises a shaft 11, skeleton drum 12 and paddles 13, the latter being secured to longitudinal strips forming the outer elements of the drum and connecting the ends thereof. The shafts 11 are journaled at their ends in opposite ends of the cabinet and intermediate their ends in a cross piece 14, which is attached at its ends to the front and the back of the cabinet. The paddles 13 are curved to provide cups, which, in the operation of the machine, scoop up the water and splash or throw the same upwardly through the dishes aranged in the upper portion of the compartment 7 and received upon a tray or rack. The paddles 13 are arranged in rows corresponding to the strips of the drums to which they are attached and are spaced apart. The paddles of every other row are disposed opposite the spaces between the paddles of the intermediate rows, and this insures a thorough washing of the dishes by the splashing or throwing of the water thereon. The slosh wheels are adapted to be rotated in reverse directions and in a manner so that the outer pad dles adjacent the front and back of the cabinet travel upwardly. A pulley 15 is secured to the projecting end of each of the shafts 11 and these pulleys are connected by means of a crossed belt 16 whereby the slosh wheels are rotated in opposite directions. A hand wheel 17 mounted upon an end of the cabinet is connected by means of a belt 18 to a pulley 19 fast to one of the shafts 11.
Rotation of the hand wheel 17 results in a 7' reverse rotation of the pulleys 15 and the sloshwheels in the manner stated.
A rack or tray is adapted to be supported within the upper portion of the compartment 7 and comprises a frame 20, a bottom 21 and longitudinal elements 22 which engage and support the dishes in spaced relation, thereby insuring every part being reached by the water in the operation of the machine. The bottom 21 preferably consists of wire fabric and the elements 22 may consist of strands t wire or strips of any suitable material. The middle portion of the tray or rack is elevated and opposite side portions slope outwardly and downwardly. Suitable stops 23 project inwardly from the trontand back of the cabinet and receive and support the dish tray or rack. A box 25 is adapted to be supported upon the rack or tray and is designed to receive spoons, knives and forks, and this box may be formed of wire fabric or other suitable material. A. deflector 26 is located upon the lower side of the cover 2 opposite the medial elevated portion of the dish tray or rack, and serves to direct the water thrown upwardly by the slosh wheels downwardly upon the dishes and cutlery supported in the upper portion of the compartment 7. The deflector 26 is centrally disposed and flares upwardly in opposite directions from its lowest point.
The dishes to be washed are placed upon the rack or tray in spaced relation and the knives, forks and spoons are deposited in the box 25. The troughs 9 and lower portion of the compartment 7 are supplied with warm suds water, and after the cover 2 has been closed the machine is operated by rotating the slosh wheels in the manner herein stated. This results in a throwing or splashing of the water through and upon the dishes and cutlery and a cleansing thereof. The warm suds water is thrown upwardly along the front and the back of the cabinet and is deflected inwardly by means of the cover 2 and downwardly by the deflector 26, thereby causing every part of the dishes to be subjected to the splashing action of the water with the result that the dishes are neraoea thoroughly cleaned in a comparatively short time.
Having thus described the invention, ll claim:
1. lln a dish washer, the combination with a cabinet and a partition therein forming upper and lower compartments and de pressed intermediate its longitudinal edges, of a supplemental partition secured to the before mentioned partition and having its medial portion raised to provide adjacent troughs, a slosh wheel for each of the troughs and means for imparting a reverse rotation to the slosh wheels.
2. A dish washer comprising a cabinet, a partition therein dividing the cabinet into upper and lower compartments, a supplemental partition secured to the before-mentioned partition and having its middle portion raised to form adjacent troughs, a slosh wheel for each of the troughs, means for imparting a reverse rotation to the slosh wheels a dish tray within the upper portion of the upper compartmentand a deflector uponthe lower side of the cover for directing the water downwardly upon the dishes.
3. A dish washer comprisin a cabinet, a cover closing the top of the cabinet, a partition secured to the walls of the cabinet and depressed between its longitudinal edges, a supplemental partition having its medial longitudinal portion elevated and its side portions sloped and curved laterally and upwardly and attached to the longitudinal edge portions of the first mentioned partition and forming troughs therewith, reversely driven slosh wheels in the troughs, a tray above the slosh wheels and having its medial longitudinal portion elevated and its side portions sloped outwardly and downwardly, and a deflector upon the lower side of the cover having its medial longitudinal portion depressed and its side portions upwardly and outwardly flared.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
