IMPROVEMENT lN DlSH-WASHING MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,434, dated February 6, 1872.

SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OATHARINE WOODRUFF, of Antioch, county of Contra Costa, State of California, have invented an Improved Dish- NVashing-Machine; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in machines for washing dishes; and it consists, first, in the employment of racks for supporting the dishes which are made of wire, so as to permit the water to circulate freely; secondly, in the employment of wire trays or baskets, which are divided into compartments for the reception of the dishes; and lastly, in the construction of the paddle or agitator for throwing the water upon the dishes in the baskets.

In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in whicl1-- A represents a box having a threesided bottom, as shown, and provided with a cover, B. \Vires c c c extend across 'this box from end to end upon each side, so as to form racks upon which the baskets which contain the dishes are placed. Two or more of these wires 0 c extend across the box upon the same plane and at a short distance apart, while one or more, 0, can be placed above them, at the outside, so as to form a railing, inside of which the baskets are placed. Passing across the middle of the box, parallel with and midway between the racks, is a shaft, D, which car ries two or more longitudinal vanes or paddles, E. The shaft D is provided with a crank, F, on the outside of the box, by which it can be revolved when it is desired to agitate the water with the paddles. The peculiar shape of the bottom of the box will cause the water to be thrown up against the wires 0 0 when it is agitated by the paddles. The baskets G, into which the dishes are to be placed, consist of a square wire frame, having a bottom formed of crossed wires, as shown. The upper end of some of these flames or baskets is divided into spaces in one direction by means of wire rods h, extending from end to end of the frame, at the desired distance apart, for the purpose of forming a separate space for each dish or other article to be washed. Each basket is provided with a handle by means of which it can be lifted about. Each machine is provided with baskets having spaces of different widths, in order to accommodate the different-sized articles which it will be required to wash. These baskets are numbered in the drawing 1, 2, 3, 4.

In order to wash dishes with this machine, a basket, No. 1, having narrow spaces between the top wires, is selected for the plates. Each plate is then stood upon its edge, so as to rest upon the bottoin of the wire basket, while its upper edge rests against one of the wires It, thus separating them so that the water can pass between them. Basket No. 2 is provided with one or more compartments made of wire cloth or gauze-work, which will contain the knives and forks. Nos. 3 and 4 are for larger articles. The baskets having been filled with dishes, they are placed upon the racks and the box partially filled with hot water. Now, by turning the crank F the paddles E will be caused to splash the water upon and over the dishes, and in a short time thoroughly cleanse them, after which the baskets can be lifted out of the box and placed to one side to allow the dishes to dry, which they will readily do after being removed from the hot water.

By this means I provide a convenient, cheap, and effective machine for washing dishes.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 7 1; In a dish-washing machine, consisting of the box A, having a three-sided bottom, shaft 1) with its paddles E, side racks composed of wires 0 c c, and baskets l, 2, 3, 4, all arranged and operated in the manner described.

2. The baskets 1, 2, 3, 4, when constructed and arranged as described, for the purpose specified.

3. The shaft F, provided with the paddles E, in combination with the racks composed of the wires 0 c c and wire baskets 1, 2, 3, 4.
