This inventionrelates to, a door step and latch. The first object of the invention is theproduction of a door stop and latch, whereby a door isautomatically held in placein its open position. The second ob ject is the production of a stop and lat-ch from which a door canbeeasily released, by slightly bearing on an element thereof. The third object of the invention is a" door step and latch, in which its moving-element is spaced fromthe other portions thereof, so as not to retain moisture between its parts and pavement in front of the structure as on the broken line 1, 1 of Fig. 2 with an exemplification of a plurality of the door stops and latches; Fig. 2 shows a section of Fig. 1 on the line 2, 2; Fig. 3 indicates an enlarged portion of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 represents an enlarged top plan view of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an enlarged section of Fig. 3 on the line 5, 5; Fig. 6 shows an enlarged section of Fig. 3 on the line 6, 6; Fig. 7 indicates an enlarged section of Fig. 3 on the line 7, 7, and Fig. 8 represents a side elevation of an element of Fig. 3; Fig. 9 shows an elevation of a modified door stop and latch; Fig. 9 indicates a fragmentary portion of Fig. 9; Fig. 10 represents an enlarged top plan View of Fig. 9 and Fig. 11 indicates an end view of an element of the door stop and latch with another modification.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 8 the front of a garage is indicated at 20, with the door openings 21 for the single doors 24 and 25 and the double doors 26 and 27. The floor of the garage 30 in this instance is on a level which is above the top face of the ground 31, and an inclined portion 32 connects the level of the floor 30 and the level of. the ground 31. For the double doors 26 and 27 there is indicated the post 35 preferably of steel, with the tapered lower end 36 and the elongated openings 37 and 38. A pair of similar-latches are "designated respectively in their entireti'esby the letters'A and B. I The said latches are pivoted to the opposite faces of the post 35 by means of the pin 40,'which extends through openings in' the latches.
.lVashers4I' on the pin 40*bear against the outer faces of thelatches A and B, and a cotter pin 42} extending through the pin 40' maintains the latches-A and B in proper lateralposition. Thehose'end 43 of each latch is tapered and has formed therewith the turned over flange 44. 1 Arecess'45 with the turned over flange 46 is formed in each latch in its top edge and adjacentto'itsnose end? 43. A door stop plate 50 isc'onne'c'ted to e'a'ch latch A'and B =at the side of the "recess adjacent to the pin 40, and enters a notch 51 formed in the latch. The plate is riveted in place by means of a lug 52 that extends from the latch and enters an opening53 in said plate. tom edge of the latch A adjacent to its tail end 56, and the latch B also has the stop 55 formed therein adjacent to its tail end 56, and the additional stop 55 adjacent to its nose end 43. The distance between the pin A stop 55 is formed in the bot-' 40 and the tail end56 is greater than the distance between said pin and its outer point 57 of the nose end 43, which produces an over balance for the tail end of the latch.
In the body of each latch A and B are.
formed depressions 59, which function as spacers between the latches and the post 35. The latches are preferably made of steel. If desired the post 35 may have the triangular cross members 60 in its openings 37 and 38 to more. securely anchor it in the ground- The door 24 has provided therefor a post 35 with the latch A and its appurtenances, and the door 25 has provided therefor a post 35 with the latch Band its appurtenances. In Figs. 1 and 2, the doors 24 to 27 are indicated as secured, by the latches A and B in their open position. To release any one or all of the doors, the user bears down slightly on the nose end 43 of the latch, whereby it will swing on the pin 40 clear of the door,
which latter may then be swung to its closed position. To locate any one of the doors with its stop and latch,'it is simply swung to its open position, and the door upon contacting with the nose end 43 of the latch,
will ride with its bottom end on the turned over flange 44, and enter the recess 45, strike the floor stop plate 50 and then remain locked in recess 45. While the door rides on the turned over flange 4A the nose end 43 will swing down. After the door enters the recess 4E5, the nose end 43 will automatically rise and lock the door in its open position, by means of the over balancing gravity effect of the tail end 56 of the latch.
The stops 55 of the latch contact with the posts 35 when the nose end 43 is in its raised position and limits the extent of the upward swing of thelatter and the stops 55 contact with the posts 35 when the tail end 56 is in its raised position.
The stop 55 of the latches B may be omitted, and each of the latches may have one or both stops. The plate 50 instead of being'riveted to the latches A and B maybe integral therewith. Each of the latches may have-a counterweight at its tail end to counterbalance its nose end.
Various other modifications may be made in the invention and the present exemplification is to be taken as illustrative and not limitative thereof.
