IMPROVEMENT IN CAMP-BEDS..

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,617, dated September 14, 1875; application filed November 17, l874 To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Hmnu R. MILLs, of Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Camp-Bed, of which the following is a specification In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the frame extended as a stretcher, and showing in dotted lines the rubber cloth stretched for a shelter-tent. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the frame arranged as a couch with the canvas cot bottom buttoned on. Fig.

3 is a perspective view of the same arranged as a foot-bath. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of the joint in the frame side rail and of thebacksupporting ratchet-brace. Fig. 5 is a plan View in detail of the end cross-bar lock open. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the same locked. Fig. -7 is a longitudinal section of the main folding cross-brace.

In the drawing, A A represent two wooden side rails, hinged or jointed near the middle by a hinge, a, which has a pair of extra eyelugs at the bottom, which may be locked, if desired, by a pin or screw, b, Fig. 4, when the bar is extended. The side rails A are connected at each end by a metal cross bar or girt, B, jointed at the middle, and locked inline by a spring-bolt, c, passing through the overlapping ends. The outer ends of the girts are pivoted to the side bars A, so that the whole can be folded into a compact bundle. O is a jointed metal crossbar, having a downward convex curve, and slotted at each end to slip under the head of a bolt pendent from the bars A A near their joints. The joint of the bar 0 has a spring-bolt, c, for looking it in the extended position, as shown in Fig. 7. D are folding legs at the ends of the bars A. There is also a long brace-leg, D pivoted to the inner end of each longer part of said bars A with a hook, 61,011 the inner side of each, with which engages a ratchet-bar, D pivoted at the other side of the joint, by means of which the shorter end of the stretcher-l'rame may be raised and sustained at any angle of inclination when used either as a chair or a couch. e e are twometal bars, pivoted at the head of the bars A to enter notches cut in the adjacent cross-bars B to lock them and keep the frame from skewing. E is a cot bottom of canvass or other material, longer its edges. This cloth may be used as a shelfer-tent by inserting the lower ends of two light iron rods, g, through eyes g in the head and foot cross-bars, and driving them into the ground. The top ends of the rods may be bent inwardly, connected by a cord, and guyed to support the cloth, which should be guyed at the corners.

The foot-bath is made by bagging the lower end of the bottom E at the foot of the frame, and buttoning one end of the rubber cloth into the foot of the frame. The sitz-bath is made in substantially the same manner; and the full-length bath is made by attaching the extremities of the canvas to the head and foot of the frame and buttoning the rubber cloth along the sides, first detaching the crossbar 0.

The canvas supports the rubber cloth when used as a bath, and thus enables the use of a thin fabric, which would not otherwise sustain the weight of the occupant and of the water.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the folding and adjustable frame A B and cot bottom E with'the studs f, rods g, and eyes g, said rods being adapted to receive the water-proof fabric F, substantially as set forth.
