IMPROVEMENT IN ANlMAL-POKES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,097, dated August 24, 1875; application filed July 2,1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. GUSTIN, of Mexico, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Animal-Poke; and I do hereby de clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, with the top of the bow and end of the tongue broken 011'; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, partly in section; Fig. 3, a sectional detail of the breast-block, showing bearing-plate and its relation; Fig. 4, a detail of the cross-head,

with the tongue in transverse section.

This invention relates to certain improvements in animal-pokes, which, as usually constructed, have a yoke pivoted at the lower ends to a tongue. upon the rear end of which is a breast-block provided with points, the whole being attached to the necks of animals to prevent them from jumping fences, and to keep them within bounds generally.

The invention consists in the means of attaching the cross-head to the tongue of the yoke, as hereinafter described.

In the drawing, A represents the tongue, which is attached at its rear end to the middle of the breast-block B by means of a strap of metal, or other suitable means. 0 is the yoke,which is provided at its lower ends with extended pivot-plates D, in which the crosshead E, carrying the tongue, is suspended. The eyes a of the pivot-plates are tapered, so as to present a larger opening upon the inner side, and adapt the said plate to be forced over a spring-seated catch, 1), in the crosshead, whereby the ends of the yoke are securely, but detachably, held upon the crosshead. Said plates D are attached .to the lower ends of the yoke by means of a bolt passing through a slot in said plates, whereby the yoke may be adjusted to the differentsized necks of difierent animals. .The crosshead consists of two stem-pieces, F F, having beveled flanges o c and clamps G G, which extendover the said flanges,-the said clamps and pieces F F being securely locked together around the. tongue by a staple, H, with screwthreaded ends, fastened by nuts.

By means of this arrangement and the lugs, which are cast upon the parts to bind the wood surfaces, the cross-head is made to firmly secure the tongue, the beveled shape of the flanges c 0 giving to the cross-head an adjustment to difi'erentsized tongues, which adjustment may be also employed to take up the wear when the devices require tightening.

l is the bearing-plate, located upon the bearingblock, and cast in one piece from malleable iron,'to form the guides J J and the pointed pins K K. The said bearing-plate is held up by spiral springs L, which cause the points of the pins to recede in the breastblock, in which position they are maintained, except when the animal in its efforts to jump a fence strikes the tongue against the obstruction. When this occurs the motion of the tongue causes the yoke to strike upon the bearing-plate, and the points are made to descend and prick the animal through the holes in the breast-block.

- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination, with the tongue, of the cross-head, consisting of the stem-pieces F F, having beveled flanges c 0, the clamps G G, and the staple H, secured by nuts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
