be readily and quickly expanded to its full v height and size, without providing complicated or cumbersome mechanism which would make its manufacture expensive.
Another important objectis the provision in a device of the character described, of suitable supporting means capable of supporting the weight of a person, yet light and strong and which may be folded when not in use.
To this enjl the invention contemplates top and bottom metallic supporting rims between which is secured a rubber body, preferably in cylindrical form as by means of attaching rings. Suitable folding arms attached to the top and bottom rings support the top rim when the device is unfolded, but which when collapsed will lie within the contour of either top'or bottom rim. This allows the device when folded to occupy the minimum amount ofspace.
In some instances it is desirable to provide a container closed at the bottom and attached to the top rim only and hanging free therefrom, In this case the same folding arms would be used to support the device. This last named modification would facilitate the keeping of the device in a sanitary condition.
The invention further consists in the novel arrangement, combination and construction of parts more'fully hereinafter described and shown in the drawings.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of adevice embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevationof the device of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the device collapsed and in a carrying case.
Fig. 4: is a view of a modified form. Fig. 5 is, a view of a detail. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing an arm folded.
A base plate is indicated at 1' and may be 7 made of any desired material such for in- 1927. S.eria1No.207,75&.
stance as. aluminum, and a top rim preferably of the same material at 2. yBetween these two parts is provided a sheet rubber cylindrical body 3, the upper margin of which overlies the rim 2 and is secured between the rim and a ringias by means of screw elements 5. The bottom margin of the rubber body is secured'to the bottom plate by means of the lower ring 6 and screws 7.
A plurality of foldable supporting arms 8 are provided, three being shown, which are hinged at one endto ears 9 struck out from ring 6, and to ears lOon top ring 4. The
arms are pivoted intermediate these points as at 11, and a stop 12 provided so that movement of the'two parts of each arm may be limited to a position just past dead center.
It is to be notedthat the ears to: which the foldable arms are attached are formed at an angle, that is the plane of the ears when in finished position is not at right angles to a radiusof the device. Fig. 5 illustrates a ring with the ear struck out but before bending. When bent into vertical position, and the arm attached, the arm may.
be folded downwardly and still remain with-- in the contour of the base, as shown in Fig. '6.
The arms are constructed of sufiiciently heavy material so that they will withstand and support the weight of a person. 7
As a modified device, the rubber body maybe in the form of a cup 13 attached to the upper rim only and freely hanging there from. The arms in this case function as before.
o F1 cE j.1
In both forms, it-is preferable to use a flexible, strong rubber fabric of 'a glazed nature which may be easily and readily cleaned, and which will not crack upon repeated folding and unfolding.
A suitablecarrymg case having a hinged top and handle is indicated at 14. Due to the fact that-the rubber body may be collapsed into a small space, only a slight height is necessary for the case.
What we claim 1s:
1'. A device of the character described 7 V comprising a base, an. upper rim, foldablesupports connecting base and rim,
a flexible body secured to and depending from the'up' per rim, said body havinga-bottom integral with its sides,
a marginal flange on said body extending outwardly from the body lying outside the collapsed body and inside bottom and in the same plane therewith, the contour of the base cutting the base on a 10 said flange being secured to said base. segmental line.
2. A device of the character described, In'te-stim ony whereof, we afifixoursigna- 5 comprising a base, an upper rim foldable tures.
supports connecting base and rim, and a. p a flexible body seou 'ed'to and depending from LUGY COT-TON 'AMENT. the upper rim, said supports when folded CLARA HILFIKER.
