My invention relates to a type of protection enclosure which is in the nature of a folded piece of paper or fabric made wind or water proof for the protection of a person exposed to the elements.

The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that'may be readily folded into a small compact parcel when not in use, and in its open or extended position will afiord ample protection for a person on the inside of the enclosure.

The device may be constructed either rectangular, hexagon, octagon, or in any desired shape and may be provided with a hood if desired or with supporting means only to engage the shoulder of the user.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanyin drawing is a part and in which the separate features and parts of my improvements are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views.

In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 shows a fragmentary view of the upper portion of the device as applied to a person. The device illustrated being equipped with a hood for the protection of the user.

Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device in a folded position showing that it is equipped with a bottom section for the further protection of the user and separate straps for support over the shoulder of the user.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper section of the device with a supporting member provided with an opening for the engagement of the head of the user, the balance of the supporting member forming straps for over the shoulder.

Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are fragmentary perspective views illustrating the method employed for folding the material on the corners.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and referring now to the same, I!) indicates the body of the device shown as a rectangular enclosure constructed of paper or cloth material, pleated or folded around its entire circumferential area in a manner to permit extending or retracting the entire structure. There is an upper re-inforced edge H formed to provide a substantial structural brace, and a bottom section l2 acting as a floor for the entire lower portion of the device. In use it is only necessary for the user to place the entire device onto the floor, stand inside of the pleats and draw the entire pleated enclosure upward and fastening same across the shoulder by means of straps I3 as shown which are fastened to buttons or clasps M mounted onto the edge II as shown.

In Figure 3 is shown a modified construction illustrating a supporting member I5 having an aperture l6 out out of its center for the head of the user to pass through, leaving shoulder straps H and IT for the support of the device when fastened to the buttons or clasps I4.

If desired a folded hood illustrated as l8 in Figure 1 may be used. This hood is shown of rectangular construction and is constructed of a single piece of material and may be of any shape or size and adherently fastened to the upper re-inforced brace II and folded in such a manner that it will fit flat in line with the top when the device is in its folded position.

The arrangement of the pleats I9 is of such design that the corners may be folded down flat, the laterally arranged pleats being folded alternately in opposite directions so as to enable the device to be made of a single sheet of material.

It is manifest to anyone familiar with the art that the material forming the body of the device may be folded in various ways without departing from the scope of the invention and many changes in the general arrangement, form and configuration of the structure may be made without departing from the appended claims.

The device as shown is obviously of very cheap construction, may be transported with but very little effort, and can be constructed of any one of many suitable materials. It is designed to be used for the users protection against wind and cold and has proven successful in actual use.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire tosecure by Letters Patent in the United States, is:

1. A device of the character described comprising in combination, a tubular protecting member constructed of a sheet of flexible material pleated horizontally, and having only one aperture at the top, a re-inforced upper frame, a re-inforcing bottom member adherently fastened to the said protecting member, and means for supporting the entire device in an extended manner when in use.

2. A device of the character described comprising in combination a re-inforced open frame, a closed bottom member, a sheet of flexible material of tubular construction pleated horizontally, said frame and bottom member fastened to said pleated sheet, flexible straps equipped with apertures on one end and fastened on one end to said re-inforced frame, attaching means fastened to said frame adapted to receive the apertures of said straps to provide a support for the entire device when in use.

A device of the character described comprising in combination a re-inforced open frame, a closed bottom member, a body encircling member of flexible material of tubular construction equipped with a plurality of transverse pleats horizontally disposed, said body encircling member fastened to the outer circumferential edge of said re-iniorced frame and bottom member, supporting members attached on one end to said frame, and attaching means for fastening the depending end of said supporting member to the opposite side of said frame.

4. A device of the character described comprising in combination a re-inforced frame open at its center, a closed bottom member, a tubular body encircling member of flexible material equipped with a plurality of transverse pleats horizontally disposed, said body encircling member fastened to the outer circumferential edge of said re-inforced frame and bottom member, supporting members attached on one end to said frame, attaching means for fastening the depending end of said support member to the opposite side of said frame, and a hood member constructed of flexible material provided with pleats and fastened at three sides to the inner edges of the re-inforcing frame thereby affording protection for the head of the occupant when the device is in use.
