Application filed ma 21 Our invention relates to the art of devices for bufiing, checking and holding, sprin actuated doors and while especially design" for screen doorsit maybe adapted for use owithanydoor, e 1
Our object is to producea device for this purpose which will be strong, durable, simple and of practicallyIinexpensiveconstruction, and which .may be easily and m quickly assembled and as easily attached for operative use to any door. 1 ,Other' objects are substantiallythe same as those of other devices developed in this art which are designed to preventthe door I from slamming when returned bylthe spring to its closed positionyto prevent an rebound of the door and hold it tightly c osed.
Devices for this'purpose are subjected to .very severe and strenuous use and experience has shown us they must be constructed to withstand severe shocks; Also repairs; are sometimes necessary and to this end we have simplified the construction by forming a heavy carrying frame towhich' the opera- 25 tive parts are attached without thenecessity of rivets. 1
A clear and complete understanding of our invention will be more easily obtained by reference to the accompanying specification, claims and drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation view of our device secured in position and holding the door closed; 1
Fig. 2 shows a side elevation view of our device in open position, the door engaging it to return it to a closed position in which it n will hold the door firmly closed;
Fig. 3 shows a plan view of our device;
Fig. 4 shows a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and
Fig. 5 shows a detail view of our carrying frame. e s s Referring to the accompanying drawing the reference numeral is used to indicate the door and 11 the door casing at the swinging edge of the door. To the door casing we attach a bracket preferably formed of a strip of sheet metal folded to form parallel side walls 13 and 14, the lower ends 15 and 16 being turned outwardly to engage the door casing and provided with orifices 17 and 18, respectively, to receive screws by which the bracket is secured to the door casing. The side walls 13 and 14, are
spectively which are oppositely disposed each provided with an orifice, 19 and 20 re- 1924. serial No. 714,794.
and forpur oses hereinafter set forth. l he central portionof' the brackethas a web 12 c nectin the two sidewalls 13and 14, and anor fice 21 is providedtherein. 1 1 1 The movableoperating part ofour device comprises a pair of parallel arms 22 and 23, preferably crescent-shaped in conformation, and spaced from each other,their ends being connected" to each other by rivet pins24 and 25 respectively, andeach pin has a roller,
26 and 27 respectively, mounted thereon.
Also each arm is provided with two spaced, and preferably registering orifices to -receive the carrying frame which will now be described. The carrying frameydesignated by the numeral 28,is formed,preferably, of aheavy, strong, and-not easilyhent, wire, or itmay'be of springsteel, shaped to form. two parallel sides and an end cross piece 1 34, jretaining lugs 29 w and 30 extend- 1 fingoutwardlf from the point of junction,
preferably 0 the parallel sides and cross piece, the ends of this wire forming the frame turning outwardly to form the lugs 31 and 32. The carrying frame is of such a size, and so formed, that when the parts 1 of our device areassembledi the lugs 29 21 1111 through their respective orifices or the arms '22 and 23, and the parallel sides of the frame will lie against the inner surfaces of theirlrespective arms, as shown. Thev lugs 31 andf32 are of suflicient length to also extend through the orifices 19 and 20 respec' tively, thus pivotally'connecting thejicarrying frame 28, and the'arms 22 and23, to the side walls 13 and 14. A coil spring 33, with a hook at each end, is secured by one of its ends to the cross piece 34 of the frame, as shown its other end passing through the orifice 21,-and is thus secured to the web 12.
It will be observed that the relation of the cross piece 34 to the pull of the spring 33, and pivotally operating lugs 31 and 32, and the length and conformation of the arms 22 and 23, and the mounting of our device to the door casing, is such that when the door is opened it engages the roller 27 forcing the arms outwardly against the com pression' of the spring 33 until, the cross piece 34 has passed its dead center, and at this time the roller 27, travelling on an are from the pivotal mounting, is out of en agement with the doorwhich may be reely opened. As the roller 27 assumes this outer position, and is held there against the compression of the spring (as the cross piece has passed its dead center in its relation to the pull of the spring) the roller 26 has been moved inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2, so that it is in the pathof the door as it returns to its normal closed position.
As the door returns to the closed position it contacts this roller 26 and forccs'it outwardly and'whcn the cross piece 34 has again crossed its dead center the normal operation of the spring 33 forces the roller 27 against the door and clamps it against the closed door thus holding it in a tightly closed position. y a
a By our construction as thus shown and de scribed, it'will be apparent that the strong, heavy, carrying frame provides arigid and strongmounting for the arms and that this strength adds greatly-to the lifeof our device, for it must be borne in mind that the arms are subjected to hard andstrenuous shocks against which they should be protected. Again it will be noted we have provided a device which is easily and quickly assembled by an unskilled mechanic and that the only necessary riveting consists in seating andsecuring the two rivets 24 and 25.
In the drawings we "have illustrated only our preferred form of construction and we 1 do not desire to be limited in the scope of our construction, except as set forth in the Patent of the United States is:
1. A door check comprising a bracket se- 7 cured to the door casin a carrying frame pivotally secured to the bracket, a pair of crescent shaped arms rigidly secured to said the door as it closes, said tripping means releasing the spring actuated frame whenit is engaged by the closlng of the door which forces the closing means against the door."
2. In door check comprisinga. housingcontaining a pivotally mounted checking and holding means, a rlgid carrymg frame p1votally secured to the housing and rigidly secured at a multiplicity off points, to the checking and holding means. I p v 3. A door check compr sm-ga bracket secured to the door casing, a pair of crescent shaped arms heldin spaced relation by'rollers mounted intermediate said arms and adjacent their ends, a carrying frame formed of two parallel sides which fit. inside of said crescent shaped arms, a connecting cross piece on said frame formed integrally therewith, outwardly extending lugs at one end of the sides of said frame, means on said,
frame tosecure said frame rigidly to said arms there being orifices in said arms through which the said lugs extend and bearings in said bracket in which said lugs are journalled, spring actuated means to cause one of the said rollers to hold the door in closed position.
