UNITED STATES ZIGMONT HILDEBRANT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SECTIONAL LEVEL.
Application filed August 2, 1926.
This invention relates to an improved level such as is used by bricklayers, carpentors, and similar workmen.
My principal object is to provide a level which is constructed of several sections detachably connected together so that they may be readily separated and arranged in a comparatively small package for compactness and convenience in transportation in a comparatively small tool box.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following de: *ription and drawing.
In the drawing V Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete level.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the sections of the same separated.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the reference character 1 designates the central section, and the reference characters 2 designate the two end sections. All three of the sections are provided with customary spirit levels 3. The central section, as better shown in Figure 2, comprises a central rectangular body portion 4 and beveled end portions The beveled end portions are grooved and spaced guide strips 6 are arranged in parallelism in the grooves, and a nut 7 held between the strips in each instance.
The two end sections which are duplicate in construction, are provided with beveled ends 8 which cooperate with the complemental beveled ends of the central section 1, the same being arranged in overlapping relation as shown plainly in Figure l. The extremities of the bevelled ends 8 abut the ends of the body portion 4. Also as shown in Figure 2, the end portions 8 are also provided with grooves 9 and a single strip 10 is arranged. therebetween and adapted to lit snugly between the aforesaid spaced strips 6 to prevent relative side movement of the several sections. he complemental beveled ends of the several sections are pro- Serial No. 126,706.
vided with openings for reception of connecting screws 11 which extend therethrough and through the aforesaid nuts 7 and the small pivotally mounted cover plates or disks 12 are employed to cover the heads of the screws as shown in Figure 1.
From the showing made in the drawing and the description it is obvious that the novelty of the invention is in the making of a level for three sections having complemental beveled ends, and the beveled ends being provided with coacting strips detachably connected together and arranged in interfitting relation so as to prevent relative sidewise movement of the level when it is in use and to maintain flush relationship of the straight edges.
It is believed that by considering the description in connection with the drawing the construction and use of the invention will be plain, therefore a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A joint for a sectional level, wherein the level comprises a pair of sections, one section including a body having a beveled end portion, the other section having a body provided with a beveled end portion cooperating with the first named beveled end portion in overlapping relation, said beveled ends being provided with grooves having their open sides in meeting relation and spaced parallel strips arranged in the groove on said one section and a compleinental strip arranged in the groove on said other section and fitting between the strips on said one section, and a fastener passing through the overlapping beveled ends for securing the sections together in operative relation.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
ZIGMON T HILDEBRANT.
