T azz whom m mom Be it known} thatI, DAviD LEETE KANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakley, Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements Rules, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to rules and level devices such. as areused by bricklayers, ma; sons, and like artisans, the primary object beingto provide a deviceof this character which is sectional in construction whereby the sections may be separated and stored conveniently in tool-box, or the like for the purpose of transportation.
A further obj ect ofthe invention is to provide a sectional rule whose sections are-constructed so that they may be joined securely and in true alinement witheach other.
A still further object is to provide a rule of this nature vhose-sections are each composed of a body of soft wood or the like, and facing strips therefor which are constructed of hard wood, or other durable material.
The invention consists in thefeatures of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings, is will be seen that the body of the rule is divided into three sections, which include the terminal sections 1 and 2 and the intermediate section 8, each of which includes a body portion 4 which is constructed of some soft and inexpensive wood, or the like. Facing strips 5 of hard wood are secured in suitable manner to the upper and lower edges of the body of the intermediate section and terminate in spaced relation to the ends thereof with the beveled faces 6.
Each terminal section is provided in its inner end, and the intermediate section in each of its ends, with a longitudinally taper- ;dove-tailed recess 7 equal in depth to one-half the thickness of the body and openmg through its end face and one side face thereof. 7 A longitudinally tapering and section end, the tongue of the latter section being adapted to fit within the socket of the first section. The endface 9 of each tongue is inclined correspondingly with the inner endwall 10 of the receiving recess of the coacting. section, whereby the joint will be .5;
rendered more secure when the sections are united. In order to strengthen the joint further, the end faces of the body of each section above and below its recess are inclined as at 11, and the adjacent faces above and below the tongue are correspondingly inclined as at 12, in parallel relationto the faces 11, whereby a vertical, longitudinally extending shoulder 13 is formed between the same to resist lateral, relative movement of the joined section ends. Transverse openings 14 are provided in the tongue and in the inner wall of the recess of each section end, which are adapted to aline with similar openings in the interlocking parts of the coacting section end for the reception of the connecting bolt members 15, which in this instance are shown to be of the type com monly known as saw handle screws, in order that there will be no outwardly projecting ends, the heads thereof being countersunk in the outer side faces of the body portions of the respective sections.
At each joint between the sections, detachable facing strip sections 16 are fitted against the upper and lower edges of the meeting ends in staggered relation to the joint and have their ends beveled correspondingly to the ends 6 of the permanently connected facing strip sections for even engagement, therewith. These detachable sections extend to the outer ends of the terminal sections of the rule body, and are adapted to be connected at their opposite ends to the respective section ends of the rule by means of the vertical securing bolts 17, which are mounted within the openings 18 therein.
As shown in the drawings, the terminal sections of the rule are provided preferably with spirit tubes 19 which are arranged at i ing spirit tube 20 is provided medially witha in the intermediate section for use in levelmay be joined together in such a manner as to provide a body whose straight edges are mitrue almement and unlnterrupted.
