To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter de* scribed; the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the draw- ;;0 ing, 1 indicates the dial secured, in this instance, to turn with a cap 3 which is journalled in the bottom plate 1 of the housing and is secured to the lock spindle 5. Also mounted to turn on the bottom plate 4 is a knob 6, this knob 6 having secured thereto a gear 7 which meshes with a gear 8 arranged to turn with the cap 3 and the dial 1 on the under side of said dial. A housing cover 9 having a surrounding flange 10 abuts the edge of the bottom plate 4: of the hous ing and is secured thereto, in this instance, by screws 11. This housing cover encloses both the gears 7 and 8 as well as the dial 1, and has an opening 12 through which the knob 6 projects so that the knob may be operated manually from the outside of the housing in order to shift the dial 1. The housing cover 9 also has an opening 13 at the top thereof through which a portion of the dial 1 may be exposed. A pointer or index 1% is provided at the top of the opening to point to the graduations on the dial 1.

With the end in view of closing the opening 13 so that the permutation lock cannot be operated even though the combination be known, a shutter mechanism is provided adapted to be locked against opening. This shutter mechanism, in'this instance, comprisestwo blades 15 each of which, in this instance, is supported by one of two arms 16 journalled on the bearing 17 on a bottom plate 1 of the housing in rear of the dial dial to a shutter blade 15. These two arms support the blades 15 so that they may be moved one toward the other to close the opening in the housing cover or they may be moved one away from the other to open the opening 13 and expose the dial. In their open positions, they may be held by a spring detent- 18 provided with a nose 19 adapted to enter notches 20 in the two arms and in closed position, the shutter blades may be held against opening by a padlock or other suitable locking device passed through openings 21 formed in forwardly projecting ears 32 extending from the proximate edges or the two blades. 7 While the spindle 5 is shown as connected to the dial shaft it is apparent that it might be connected to the shaft of the knob 6. In 7 the latter case, the gears 7 may be smaller than the gear 8 in order to speed up the rotation of the dial.

From the foregoing it will be seen that 1 and each'extending around the edge of the there has been provided a closure for the dial of a permutation lock which is provided with an opening rendering visible only that portion of the dial adjacent the index or pointer, thus making it impossible for one at a distance to view the operation of the dial and thereby surreptitiously obtaining the combination. The operating knob for the dial is located to one side of the dial and connected to the dial by gearing so that the hand of the user in adjusting the'dial is not in the line of vision between the operator and the index. A novel means is employed for closing the opening in the housing through a shutter mechanism which may be locked so that the adjustment of the dial to operate the combination cannot be effected except by one having the key to .mutation lock, of a housing enclosing the dial and having an opening through which a portion of the dial is exposed and a movable shutter mechanism for entirely closlng said opening.
