IMPROVEMENT IN GAGE-DIALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,908, dated J one 29, 1875; application filed June 3,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE E. CROSBY, of East Somerville, Massachusetts; and AL- BERT G. MEADY, of Gharlestown, Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam or Vacuum Gages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents a gage made in accordance with our invention.
Steam and vacuum gages heretofore have been made with metallic dials, usually of brass. Our improvement has particular reference to the dial, and our improvement consists in making it of card-board, leather-board, papier-mach, rubber, or other suitable nonmetallic substance impervious to dampness, non-corrosive, and capable of being washed and cleaned.
The dial A, represented in the drawing, is card-board, waterproofed, stamped with the usual characters, and enameled.
Our improvement possesses important advantages in several respects. The material is much cheaper than the brass, copper, &c., heretofore used for the purpose. The circles,
graduations, figures, and letters are all put onby printing at one operation, instead of being stamped each separately, as is necessay in making metallic dial, and the dial does not require any process of straightening, waxing, grinding, or polishing, as is the case with the metallic dial after it is stamped. It is entirely free from liability to the green corrosions which gather on the metallic dial, and it is more easily read at a distance.
In making our dial, we prefer, on the whole, to use waterproofed and enameled cardboard, which is out out into the form desired, and by lithographing or printing is provided on its outer face with the necessary characters, graduations, &c., required for the dial of a steam or vacuum gage.
The printing or lithographing operation may be either before or after the card-board is cut to the form of a dial. The material is enameled or provided with a surface that can be washed without injury after the printing is done.
The dial may be fixed to the case of the gage in the usual way.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A steam or vacuum gage dial made of waterproofed card or leather board, papicrmach, or equivalent material, substantially as described. V
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names this 31st day of May, A. 1). 1875. I
