UNITED STATES 1, 41,270 PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL HORELICK, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 PITTSBURGH TRANSFORMER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
TRANSFORMER-BUSHING surron'r.
Application filed April 28, 1922. Serial No. 557,426.
the same time it is important that they be securely held in position and that the holding means be tightened against leakage of moisture into the interior parts of the transformer container and that the whole of the structure be secure against deterioration due to weather conditions. I
The object of this invention is to provide a supporting structure for a transformer bushingattaining the above results and at the same time simple in formation and inexpensive in cost.
In the accompanying drawings the figure shown illustrates one embodiment of the invention in vertical elevation with parts broken away and in section.
In the specific embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings the lead L from a transformer positioned in a tank passes upward through the insulating bushing B and is connected to the top terminal T. A bushing or insulator support S surrounds the central portion of the bushing B and has a sleeve 5 extending up underneath the petticoat 6 and cemented to the bushing as in,- dicated at 7. The flange portion 8 of the support S extends outwardly and is p'ro vided with a downwardly projecting annular flange 9 surrounding a circular seat portion 10 provided with a seal washer or gasket 11. The gasket 11 sets on the top flange 12 of the cylinder or pipe 13 fitting within an opening of the top 14 of the transformer tank and welded thereto as indicated at 15. This cylinder 13 is simply a steel plate rolled into cylindrical form and flanged as shown at 12.
The cylinder 13 is provided with a surrounding clamping ring 20 having a sleeve portion 21 slidably fitting the cylinder and engaging under the flange 12 thereof. A flange portion 22 of the clamping ring 20 extends outwardly and is provided with bolt holes 23 alined with the bolt holes 24' of the flange portion 8 of the bushing sup- 7 port S. Bolts 25 are provided between the flanges 8 and 22 and when these bolts are tightened the clamping ring 20 and bushing support S are drawn together with the clampingring bearing under the flange 12 so that the gasket 11 is tightly pinched between the flange l2 and the seat 10 of the support.
The cylinder 13' spaces the bushing supporting means away from the tank cover and the bushing extends freely above and below -1ts support and is firmly held in position by the cementing of its central portion within the sleeve 5. The outward extension of the flanges 8 and 22 position the clamping bolts 25 ac'cessibly and at the same time permit the full clamping pressure of these bolts to be directly transmitted to the parts gripping the gasket 11 and flange 12. None of the clamping or holding strains are transmitted to the insulating bushing B but all of these strains are concentrated in the supporting parts. At the same time the bushing support S is readily detachable to permit removal and replacement-of the bushing and all the parts are simple and rugged in structure adapted to provide a firm support and a permanently tight seal.
I claim:
' 1. In combination, a transformer tank having an opening, a hollow cylinder projecting therefrom and having a radial flange at its outer end, an integral clamping ring slidable on said cylinder between said flange and said tank, means for permanently securing said cylinder and said tank together, thereby causing said tank, cylinder and ring to be a permanent unitary structure, an integral support having a'circular seat opposite s'aid flange, a gasket between said flange and said seat, and means for pressing said clamping ring and integral support together thereby to press said flange and gasket between said support and ring to form a tight seal,
said integral support being adapted to have an insulating bushing rigidly secured thereto.
2. In combination, a transformer tank, a hollow cylinder rojecting therefrom and havin a radial ange at its outer end, a clamping ring slidable on said cylinder between said flange and said tank, said ring comprising an integral continuous circular member adapted to be positioned on said cylinder by being passed thereon only from the end thereof which is finally secured to the tank, 'means for permanently securing said cylinder and tank together, thereby causing said tank, cylinder and ring to be a permanent unitary structure, an integral bushing support having a circular seat opposite said flange, a gasket between said flange and said seat, and meansfor pressing said clampin ring and bushing su port together there y to grip said flange an gasket between said support and ring to form a ti ht seal, said integral support being a apted to have an insulating bushing rigidly secured thereto. Y
3. In combination, a tank having an open-' ing, a hollow cylinder having a flange at i one end while the maximum diameter of the other end of the cylinder is smaller than that of the fiange, an integral clamping ring assembled on said cylinder by being assed over the smaller end'thereof, a weld or securing said smaller end and tank together, thereby causing said tank, cylinder and ring to be a permanent unitary structure, a
member adapted to support an insulating bushing and to cooperate with said flange to form a substantially leak-proof joint, and means cooperating with said support and ring to effect a clamping action for said joint. 4. In combination, a tank having an opening therein, a hollow cylinder having a straight end adapted to pass within said opening while the other end is provided with a flange, a weld for securing said cyl inder and tank together, an integral ring positioned on said cylinder prior to said weld by being passed only over the straight end of said cylinder,'a support adapted to carry an insulator bushin and cooperate with said flange to form a oint, and means cooperating with said ring and support for eflecting a clampin action whereby a leakproof joint may be ad.
