be emitted and if there is awind the sparks are carried a considerable distance. It is also trueiin connection with wood and coal burning stoves, and iurnaces, especially those on farms, and many dwellings, barns and outbuildings have been destroyed because of sparks passing through stovepipes and chimneys.
There is constantly forming in stovepipes and chimneys a creosote substance which clings to the inside walls, which formation is caused by heat and ases and the various temperaturr-is at ditlerent times, and the formation continues until some time when there is a very hot fire or something is burned in the stove or furnace which creates a large blaze, which sets fire to the coating or scale on the inside of the stovepipe or chimney. The burning of the creosote formation creates a great heat in the chimney and a draft which causes particles of the formation or scales to be emitted from the chimneys tothe root and other buildings, and such red hot scales or burning fire brands burn "for some time and frequently de troy buildings.
My invention "further aims to provide a spark arrester wherein a foraminous body and a series of screens or bafiie members are adapted to prevent the escape of sparks or inflammable matter.- without retarding a draft in the chimney, the device being so constructed that should one or all of the battle screens become clogged, the draft may pass around and between said battle screens through openings of sufficient size to care for the draft, and still arrest any and all sparks. Each spark arresting device in eludes novel means for clamping it. in place and each spark arresting device is constructed to withstand the elements of nature and 1925. Serial at. 31,793.
not detract trom the general appearance of a chimney. V V V r p My spark arresting device will be hereinafter specificall described and thenclaimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein r V Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the. device mounted on a chimney, and
Fig; 2 is a vertical longitudinal View of;
the same.
The spark arresting device is constructed ot strong woven wire mesh material, made rust-proof, to term a toraminous body having side walls 5, end walls 1, and somewhat;
of a dome shaped or convex top wall 2.
Secured to the end walls 1 by rivets 3-or other fastening means are the flanges toi side walls-5 and said side walls are formed with inturned curved baffle members 6 c0- operating with the top, wall 2 in providing.
, side openings 7.
Connecting the side walls 5, adjacent the lower edges thereof, is a tie rod. 11 and mounted on said tie rod are a plurality of spacing members 12 These spacing members of various lengths are employed for correctly positioning resilient bowed clamping members 13 which have coiled portions about the tie rod 11 and the bowed ends 14 of said clamping members are adapted to engage each corner of the inner walls 15 of the chimney 16 on which the device is mounted. The clamping members 13 may be made of resilient non-rusting steel, not affected by heat or cold and the resilient or spring ends 14 may be proportioned so as to engage the inner surface of the bricks orother building material from which the chimney is made. Vith the clamping members 13 spaced apartthere may be a fourpoint engagement with the chimney preterably in each corner to firmly anchor the device on top of the chimney. The ends of each clamping member may be connected by a string or other inflammable member to temporarily hold the ends in a retracted position while the device is being placed in position on the chimney, and then by set: ting the to the string the ends oi? the clamp in o; members will be released to forcibly engage the walls 15 ot the chimney. The release of the clamping members is automatic and it is olrvious'tllat said clamping members will lit in various kinds and sizes of chimney openings, and it an easy matter to make the toraminous body and its loraminous ballle members or screens of such size as may be required for various kinds of chimneys.
It now apparent that any sparks being emitted by the chimney will encounter the central ballle or screen 7 and should wind deflect the sparks towards the side walls :3, the sparks will be either arrested by said side walls or the bullies or screens t3 thereof. Should sparks escape these balilee or screens they will encounter the top wall and the possriiility of sparks completely escaping so remote that the spark arresting device may be considered a perfect safety factor by the users. The toran'iinous body and its ballle members avoid any interference with a draft in the chin'mey as ample hy-path space has been allowed and should soot and other matter accumulate on the device. the soot can he burned or cleaned oil from time to time.
It is thought that the utility oi my invention will be apparent without further description and while in the drawing there illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as tall within the ecope of the appended claims.
W hat I claim is:-
1. ii. spark arresting; device adapted to be held relative to the upper end of a chim ney, said device comprising; a foraminous body, toramii'ious side ballle members in said body. and a t'oraminous center baille member in said body, cooperating With said side ballle members in providing a tortuous passa 're tor sparks through said derice, said central ballle member being); inverted V- shaped with its edges extending; under said ballle members.
:2. A spark arrester for a chimney, compriainn' a toraminous body allordine a free uninterrupted ehiinney draft and a tortuous spark passage, and resilient means adapted to be he d in a retracted condition when positioning said arreater on a chimney and automatically released for engagement with the inner chimney walls; to hold said arrester in position on said chimney.
:3. J spark arrester comprising a Foruminous body having end wa ls, a series of balile members: in said body. a tie rod connecting the side walls oi said body, and resilient clamping members carried by said tie rod.
In teetimony whereof I allix my sigmr ture.
JAMES SLOCUM.
