PENCIL SHABPENERJ Application filed September This invention relatesto a pencil sharp.- ener, and an object of the invention isto provide a pencil sharpener having several advantageous features and characteristics of construction which are improvements generally over the prior art, particularly over the disclosure of my pending applica tion for Patent, Serial No. 96,738, filed March 23, 1926. I y 7 k A further object is to provide a pencil sharpener having a box of unique and improved construction for receiving the cut tings from a pencil.
A further bject is to provide in a pencil cuttings from-a pencil, and novel and im-' proved interengaging means upon'said supporting frame and box for detachablyconnecting said box to said supporting frame. lVith the above objects in View, as well as others which will appear as the specifica: tion proceeds, the invention comprises the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as now to be fully described and as hereinafter to be specifically claimed, it being understood that the disclosure herein is merely illustrative and meant in no wayin a limiting sense, changes in details ofconstruction and arrangement of parts being permissible so long as within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims; g

being broken away and in section, of the box for receiving the cuttings from a pencil;
Fig. 5 is an end view of the box as seen from the right in Fig. 4; i
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the inner end" piece of the box removed therefrom; and
Fig. 7 is a plan View of a modified form of inner end piece for the box.
l/V threspect to the drawing'and the numerals ofreference thereon, 10 denotes the supporting frame of the pencil sharpener,
including a base ll with screw holes for-- screws 12 and an upright or standard 13' upon the base. The supportingframe'i s as disclosed a casting, 14: representing a flange or rib about the side margins of the'bas-e and upright or 7 standard for strength.
Numeral 15 represents a cutter having a tapered recess 16: for the reception of the end of a pencil to be sharpened 17 is a longitudinal slot in thecutter, and 18 is a blade attached toithecutter by a screw 19, the edge of the blade extending into the tapered recess 16. a I 4 v The inner end of the cutter .15 is'provided with a stud 20 mounted in a bearing 21 integral with the supporting frame and at the side thereofopposite the cutter. A crank 22 has a tight fit upon the end 23 of the stud set said metal and thus lock the crank upon the stud, as will be understood.
Numeral 25 denotes a box detachably as sociated with the upright 13 and adapted to receive cuttings from a pencil inserted in the tapered opening of the cutter 15 to be sharpened. The box 25, as disclosed, consistsof a. casting 26 and'afront wall 27 of metal which isremovably associated with said casting 26. That is to js'ay,'the casting 26 constitutes the base 28, the side walls 29', the top wall 30, and the rear wall 31 of the box, and a blank of metal constitutes the frontwall 27 thereof. The rear wall 31 has a clearance opening 32 adapted to align with the tapered opening of the cutter 15 so that pencils to be sharpened may be inserted in the cutter. The front wall 27 of the box extends upwardly from the base 28 thereof a distance slightly less than half of the height of the box, the upper edge 33 of said wall 27 being between the side walls 29 of the casting and preferably being horizontally disposed in use. The side walls 29 of the cast:
mg are desirably parallel and are vertical in use, and the base 28 and top wall 30 are The plate of metal 27 is of outline to snugly fit within the open end of the casting adjacent the base 28 thereof, 34 representing lugs upon said plate adapted to seat in depressions 35 111 the free edges ofl the side walls 29, and 36 denoting a lug upon said plate adapted to seat in a do.
28. Numeral 38 indicates the metal of the free edges 29 and base 28 adjacent the lugs 34 are struck to upset plate 27 to the casting, as will be obvious.
box 25 include locking members 39 adapted to detachably enter vertical elongated slots 40 in the upright or standard 13, said upright or standard havmg two sets of elon-l gated slots 40, one set to be used when the pencil sharpener is upon a horizontal support A (Fig. 1), and the other set to be used when the sharpener is upon a vertical support B (Fig. 2). Each member 39 includes a downwardly disposed hook 41 providing a notch 42 between the hook and a side wall 29, the front and rear walls 43 of the notch being preferably vertical and spaced apart a distance approximately equal to the thickness of the material of the upright or standard 13.
As disclosed, the plate 27 is notched a 44 to provide a spring 4:. bent outwardly away from the casting 26'. A protuberance 46 upon the spring is adapted to enter a depression 47 in the upright 13, there being two depressions 47 in said upright, one to be entered by the protuberance when the sharpener is upon a horizontal support, as in Fig. 3, and the other to be entered by said protuberance when the sharpener is upon a vertical summrt, as in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 7 the plate 27 is with ut ill? 12 cial spring 45 and protuberance 46. said plate 27 being here adapted to itself serve as the spring member.
The manner of d-eta-chably associating the box 25 with the upright 13 will be apparent.
The locking members 39 are first inserted in the slots 40 until the notches 42 align with the upright or standard, and the spring 45 is made to engage the adjacent face oflthe upright or standard with pressure; The box being so situated against the upright, it is forced to slide downwardly until the bases f the notches 42 engage the lower edges of said metal and lock the standard until said walls 43 are clear of said upright or standard. lVhen the box is "suspended upon the upright or standard, the preferably smoothly curved about as shown.
cutter is in the box, the wall 27 is clear of the cutter, and the opening of the cutter {aligns with the clearance opening 32 of the jlrear wall of the box.
It is to be understood that the plate 27 .l r ,could have the special splmg 4.) with pro tuberance 46 omitted, or the plate 27 could lg have a protuberance such as that denoted 46. pression 37 in the free edge of the base locations where glwhat I claim as new and desire to secure of the side walls'ifiby Letters Patent is:
