G. H. REIMER HOLDING DEVICE Filed Feb. 23, 1922 Patented Apr. 24, 1923.
entree stares GEORGE H. REIMER, FULTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR- TO PATENT NOVELTY COMPANY,
OF FULTON, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
HOLDING nnvrcn.
Application filed February 23, 1922. Serial No. 538,491.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Barium, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fulton, county of Whiteside, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inHoldiug Devices, of which the followingis a specification.v
This invention relates to sheet metal devices formed to hold various articles, such as ice-picks and coupon books, whereby the same will be retained in convenient position for use.
, Generally stated, the object of the invention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement whereby the entire device may be formed from a single piece of sheet metal, with separate pockets or compartments for the ice-pick and coupon book or other articles, and whereby the device may be produced by comparatively simple and inexpensive operations in the manufacture thereof.
Another objectis to provide an improved construction and arrangement where y cer tain features of construction heretofore employed are not necessary.
To this and other useful ends the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a combined ice-pick and coupon book holder embodying the principles of the invention, showing the same attached to a support in position for the easy and convenient withdrawal of the ioe-pick or coupon book, or any other articles which the device may be adapted to hold.
Figure 2 is a view looking down upon the upper end of said device.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of said device.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a single piece or section of sheet metal bent or pressed into the desired form to r provide a flat front wall 1 which is inclined outwardly to provide a pocket 2 for the coupon book. Said pocket is provided with downwardly tapered side walls 3, as shown, and spaces 4 are formed outside of these side walls, whereby the ice-pick pockets 5 are spaced a distance from the coupon book pocket. In other words, these icepick pockets are formed by downwardly tapered side walls 6 and 7 and by curved outer walls 8, whereby the walls 3 and 6 and the spaces 4: intervene between the coupon book pocket and the two ice-pick pockets.
Side ears 9 are preferably formed at the upper corners of the device, with holes 10 for the insertion of nails or screws to attach the device to the wall or other support in positionfor the convenient insertion and removal of the ice-pick or coupon book or other articles. lhe lower edge of the device is formed with an ear 11 having a hole 12 for the insertion of a nail or screw for attaching purposes. In this way the side edges and the bottom edge of the device are pressed tightly against thewall or other surface, so 7 that only the upper ends of the three pockets tinct and separately formed from the body of sheet metal. The rounded inner walls 15 form stiflening ribs which are interposed between the wide pocket and the narrow pockets and bear against the wall or other flat surface to which the device is attached. With this construction, the screws or nails for attaching the device in place, so that its marginal edges will rest against the flat surface, do not pass through any of the pockets, but to the contrary are all inserted at points outside of the area of said pockets, in the manner shown and described. It will be seen that side walls 3 and 6 and 7 are all flat and disposed in vertical planes, so that they are parallel, whereby the front walls 8 are each as wide at its lower end as at the upper end thereof, notwithstanding that the pockets 5 taper toward their lower ends when the device is viewed from the side, as shown in Figure 3, and this also means that the wall 1 is as wide at its lower end as at the upper end thereof.
It will be seen that the construction provided forms a pair of hollow inner rounded stiffening ribs at 15 which engage the back wall surface but are not attached thereto, and a pair of hollow outer rounded stiffening ribs at 8, thus stiffening the thin sheet metal structure in a beneficial manner, and at the same time providing the two narrow vertical grooves 4; which face outwardly and which separate the two narrow pockets from the broad middle pocket. The outer portions 9 resist any outward pressure on the front wall of the wide middle pocket, and the unattached inner ribs 15 thus interposed between the carrying pockets are broadly new.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. In a device for holding an ice-pick and a coupon book or other articles, the combination of an outwardly inclined front wall of sheet metal, with downwardly tapered side walls formingwith said front wall a relatively wide pocket, and other clown- Wardly tapered side walls connected by narrow outer front walls to form relatively narrow pockets forming hollow rounded outer stifiening ribs at each side. of said wide pocket, with outwardly open narrow spaces forming narrow vertical open grooves on the outer face of the device between the middle pocket and the two narrow pockets. marginal attaching portions for the upper corners of the device, adapted to engage a Wall or other fiat surface, when the device is attached in position for use, and inner narrow walls unattached to said surface and forming hollow rounded inner stiffening ribs between said pockets to merely engage said flat surface, so that outward pressure on the front wall of said wide pocket is resisted entirely by said outer attached corner portions, and whereby said pockets are all closed at the back of said device by said flat surface and are each separately formed and open only at the upper edge of said device.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1, said attaching provisions comprising holes formed outside of the area of said pockets, adjacent the outer edges of said device, with a margin of sheet metal provided at the sides and lower edge of said device for the formation therein of said holes.
3. A structure as specified in claim 1, said outer pockets each having their side walls disposed parallel, so that the outer rounded wall of each inner pocket is as wide at its lower end as at the upper end thereof.
4. A structure as specified in, claim 1. the side walls of each pocket being flat and all of these side walls being vertical and parallel.
