SHEET FEEDER.
Application filed February 2, 1925. Serial No. 6310.
My invention relates to sheet feeders em ploylng feed boards and side guides. such asare employed, for example, in connection The invention has the PIOVISIOHOf means whereby the side guides may be restored to the l O$jitlOIlS se-- lected forthem, whereby the runs of sheets may be interrupted; to permit the running of sheets of other sizes and may thereafter be resumed, there being cooperating" indices whereby the side guides may be quickly and accurately restored to the positions selected for h m With a printing press equip 'ied with a device of my invention a given run of sheetsmay be interrupted to permit sheets of anothersize to be run through the press. the side guide being adapted to be quickly restoredto its carefully selected position when the first run istoboresumed. the press thus not being required to remain idle in order to maintain the accuracy-ofthe adjustment of the side guide in; event that a given run is to be discontinued for any reason.v
The invention has other characteristics and will be'fully set forth in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment thereof, and inwhich Fig. 1 is a side view of a proof press equipped with a sheet feeder of my invention, parts being broken away and shown in section; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on a larger scale on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan View, and Fig. 4c is a sectional view on a larger scale, on line l4 of Fig. 2.
The press illustrated includes a flat reciprocating bed 1 and a cylinder 2 which is rotated by any suitable means, the cylinder illustrated being operated by a hand crank 3, the bed being in gear with the cylinder.
The cylinder is equipped with gripper-s4 carried upon a shaft 5 and opened and closed by means of the arm 6 fixed upon the shaft, a cam 7 which elevates the grippers through the intermediation of the arm, and a roller 8 that is upon the arm and directly engaged by the cam, there being a spring 9 which presses the roller 8 upon the cam and which closes the grippers when the cam is moved out of engagement with the roller.
The feeder includes a feed board 9 including as a part thereof an extension 10.
for one of its objects The feed board has a slot 11 extending cross-vv wise thereof and'formedin its extcnsionlO Any usual or suitable guides 12 are carried.
by the cylinder to determine the extent to which the sheets 13 may be fed forwardly.
Ar side guide .141; extends above the top surface of the board, this guide having ayoke 15 extending mtothe slot 11 whereby the guide maybe directed in its adjusting depend from the board extension 10. The.
yoke 15 of the side guide is in vf-lnreaded engagement with the threaded portlonof the rod. and the rodcarries an adjusting knob.
by'which it'may beturned this rod engaging one end ofthe board extension "10. The rod has a reduced end, 21, the shoulder upon the rod at its reduced end engaging one side of the bearing 19, which bearing serves as a stop to take end thrusts of the rod. A spring 22 is coiled about the rod and presses at one end against the opposite side of thebearing 19, that acts as a stop, and against a head 2-3 upon the rod, whereby the rod is yieldingly held in afixed plane of rotation. One long side of the slot 11 is providedavith a scale 24 with which one side face of the guide 14: may cooperate to indicate the position to which the guide is adjusted. If a notation is kept of this location, a given run of thepress may be interrupted and the guide may be given another adjustment to suit the new run, whereafter the guide may be re-adjusted to its original position for the resumption of the original run. The threads upon the rod are very line so that the adjusting movements of the guide are micrometric. If desired, the knob 20 may be provided with a scale 24 around its periphery to be transverse of the turned may be noted, an arrangement permitting the most accurate restoration of the guide 14 to any selected position.
Changes may be made without departing from the invention.
IIaving thus described my invention I claimf 1. In a sheet feeder the combination with a feed board; of a rotatable rod assembled with the board and arranged transversely of the board beneath the latterrand accessible for operation at one side of the board;
and a side guide at the opposite side of the board and in threadedconnection with the rod and extending above the board within the side limits of the latter whereby the rod, upon being turned, causes the side guide to be moved transversely of the heard, there being a scale upon one of these latter two elements arranged transversely of the board and a cooperating index upon the other of these two elements to indicate the extent to which the side guide is moved by the rod transversely of the board.
2. In a sheet feeder, the combination with a feed board; of a rotatable roe assembled with the board and arranged transvert-iely ot the board beneath the latter and ace-es sible for operation at one side of the board; and a side guide at the opposite side of the board and in threaded connection with the rod and extending above the board within the side limits of the latter whereby the rod, upon being turned, causes the side guide to be moved. transversely of the board, there being a scale upon one of these latter two elements arranged transversely of the board and a cooperating indexupon the other of these two elements to indicate the extent to ol the board beneath the latter and accessible tor operation at one side ot the board; and a side guide at the opposite side of the board and in threaded connection with the rod extending above the board within the side limits of the latter whereby the rod, upon being turned, causes the side guide to be movedtransversely ot the board, there being a scale and cooperating index provided upon the rod and board to indicate the position to which the rod is turned.
4-. In a sheet feeder, the combination with a feed board; of? a rotatable rod assembled with the board and arranged transversely of the board and accessible for operation at one side of the board; a side guide at" the opposite side of the board and in thread ed connection with the rod whereby the rod, upon being turned causes the side guide .to be moved transversely of the board; there being a scale upon one of these latter two elements arranged transversely of the board and a cooperating index upon the other of those two elements to indicate the extent to which the side guide is' moved by the rod transversely of the board; a stop for receiving endthrusts of the rod; and a spring holding the rod against said stop.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe ALFRED c. cnnrs'rornnnson
