Abstract

In a sheet-gripping mechanism for a sheet-fed printing machine " sliding," that is, lateral displacement between the gripping surfaces of the mechanism, is prevented by constructing the mechanism in such a manner that the resultant reaction force 8, Fig. 1, on the bearing surfaces 7 of a lever 3 is at an angle to the centre line 13 through the centre of the shaft 1 and the centre of the tongue 6 and this angle is substantially the same for any position of the lever 3 on the shaft. The mechanism comprises the shaft 1, Fig. 4, a retaining member 2, having flanges 2A, non-rotatably mounted on the shaft and a lever 3 resiliently mounted on the member 2. The flanges 2A are secured together by a screw 16 and a lock-nut 17, a spring 4 being located between the screw-head and a plate 18 carried by the lever 3. This spring urges the lever 3, which has an internal U-shape to facilitate ready slidable mounting or removal on or from the shaft 1, in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 4. An adjustable screw 19 forming an abutment, which is secured to the lever 3, is normally urged against a support surface 5 of the member 2. When the shaft is rotated into the position of Fig. 1, the gripper tongue 6 comes into contact with a sheet situated on the gripper impact surface 6A, Fig. 1, the screw 19 thereby disengaging from the surface 5 whilst the spring 4 urges the tongue 6 against the surface 6A.
