rLooa-rorisnine MACHINE.
rare-NT olf-'rica Application filed January 18, 19,26. Serial o. 82,016.
f My invention relates to improvements in oor polishing machines. y
Une of the objects of my invention is to provide a vnovel floor polishing machine, which is simple, cheap to make, durable, not
liable to get out of order, and which is eilicient in operation. y
rlhe novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully `described and' claimed.
ii the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
y Fig. 1 isa side elevation, paitly broken away, of my improved floor polishing machine.
Fig. 2 is a top View of the same, Fig. 3 is a section on the line of Fig. 2. f Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the polish- Fig. is a front elevation of one of the front casters y and parts connected there-j with. i
lSimilar reference characters designate similar parts in the diiferentviews.
1 designates a cross shaped supporting member, the arms ofwhich are respectivelysupported by two casters 2 each having a threaded stem 2. The outer end of each arm is bifurcated the arms 3 of each bifurcation being one above the other, Figs. 1 and '7. The stems 2 are respectively vertically adjustable in said pairsl of arms 5J, and i'itted' on,each of said stems 2, between the arms 3 is a nut 3', by the adjustment of which the front part of the member 1 may be vertically adjusted. The rear portion of the memberr 1 is supported by a centrally disposed caster 4. A handle 5 has two'arms respectively pivoted to two vtrunnions 5 on the member 1. n Centraliy between vthe 'casters 2 on the upper side'of the member 1 is a gearl casing 6 having a removable cover 7.
8 designates the circular body of a waxing and polishing head provided with peripheral radial studs 9 having heads 10, Fast-cnedy to the under side of the body 8 is a yielding pad 11, of suitable material, such connection is effected lbetween as felt or canvas. Fastened to the body 8, l
is a .central vertical shaft 12 rotatable in a bearing 13 mounted in the memberl.` A
:bevel gear 14 in. the casing 6 is fastened to the shaft 12 and meshes with a bevelvgear 15, which is mounted inthe casing G on a `horizontal intermediate shaft 16 extending through' and rotatable` in the rearwall of the casing 6. A flexible coupling connects the shaft 1G with the armature shaftv 17 of an electric motorv 18, which is carried on the member 1 at therear of the casing Such coupling preferably comprises ltwo coupling member-S19 and 2O respectivelyfastened to the'shaftsl and 17.l Ihrtending rearwardly from the member 19 are circularly arranged pins 21, which are disposed alternately between similarly arranged pins 22', which extend forwardly .frompfthe member Asshown in Fig. 6, an endless Abelt 23 is mounted on and interwoven between the pins 21 and 22, so that a flexible driving and 17.
the .shafts lBy means of thiscouplingg an' accuratey i' alinement ofthe motor shaft 117 and the intermediate shaftv 16 need not ybe made.
u For. waxing fioors, thereis provided a Vcircular 'rubbing member 24, Figi'), which .l A
is of some' flexible material, suchyas layers of cheese cloth, and which extends under the pad 11', and which is adapted to encircle the periphery of the body 8, and is provided von its inner side with sockets 25 adapted to respectively releasably receive the heads l0 of the studs 9.
A polishing member 26, similar in form to the member 24, and adaptedto be used interchangeably on the polishing head, is `similarly provided on itsv inner side with sockets ion ing member 24 is mounted, as described on l the body 8 with floor wax inserted between the member 24 and the pad 11, after which the sockets 25 are made to engage the stud heads 10. Themotor 18 is then started,
thereby revolving the head and the attached y I floor rubbing member 24, which is infconfw) tact with the iioor that is being polished, through the. intermediacy of the shaft 17.' coupling members 19 and 20pinsf21I and 22, `belt23, `shaft 1,6, gearsy lij'and 14, and shaft 12. 'The handlef is then nsedjto move themachine from'r place toplaceon the floor as the'w'akin'g 'thereotproceeds After'ithe floor has beeiiwaiged, the ineinber24 is detachedk and thepolishing member 26 is .substitutedy therefor, the shag oi the latter rubbing on the wai ,d Hoor pol- 4 theflatter'.-` f s 'Y kly'.vertically adjustingVv the member l through 'the proper adjustment ot Vthe n uts 8 in the 'stems .2ofi'tlie .casters 2,` the l iiiaehne may be disposed sothat itis adapt-l ed v'for use with either the waxing member Qinor 'the shag;` 27v ofthe polishing meinbei' 28 having the .proper pressure on. the I door land at the same .time have' the wheels member y'1.
. l To holdtlie oasterstems 2 `from accidenv@tal turning, each stem '2C is provided-with v 2, vadapted'toI freeeive therein'fthe innerend ot-the adjacent oneof two horizontal screwsv 12.9 `which Iare respectivelymounted in the r`-upper arms 3 .of the member l. .These a vertical peripheral groove 28, Figs. l and screws 29, respectively enter the grooves 28,
but'do not havev a 'bearing againstthe stems v2. such as ,will prevent their 'ree'sliding` movement, whenfthenuts 3. areturned.
i lxdo not limit my linvention to the strutL f tureshown and described, as `mai'iy modifias.` to lower the` v k respectively and respectively entering` said v Casters may be resting, =volve against said 'Hooi'.
cations, within ythe scope of vthe appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit. of my invention.
` l. ln a fioor polishing machine, a vsupportingmember having two pairs ofi arms. the arms of each pair being one above the other, two casters having` threaded stems eiitendfng` through and respectively .verticalH ly slidable in said pairsy of arms, 'two .nuts `respectively mounted on said stems and rev'spectiveiy mounted between the rarmsofsaid kpairs and supporting,` said supporting mem-f.
ber a rotarU )olisliino head mounted on said supporting` member between said casters and adapted byadjustment .of said niits to Contact with la floor supporting said casters, and means for rotating said head.
j 2in a floor polishing machine, a supportingmember having two arms, two vCasters" having threaded stems extending respectively through said arms A'and vertically slidable therein, each stem having a vertical i groove, two `rdevices mounted in said arms l grooves iorrholding`V said stems from turning, two nutsV respectively fitted on said stems and respectively supporting said arms,"
and la lrotary polishing head mounted on said supporting member between said casters f .and adjustable 'with said supporting inem-` and adaptedto- .re-
ber toward and from' a fioor on which said in testimony whereoiI I l'iavesignediny 'name to `this specification'. Y
