DRAWING PRESS.
Application filed October 6, 1923.
This invention relates to drawing or toggle presses and has for its object the provision of a simple and efficient mechanism of novel and unique construction andarrangement of parts for communicating the requisite movements and dwell to the blank holder from the customary crank shaft of the press.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a drawing press embodying the invention, with parts thereof broken away and with the blank holder in lowered position. Fig. 2 is a substantially central vertical section thereof, on the line 2--2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top view thereof, Figs. 4L and 5 are sections similar to Fig. 2 showing different positions of the parts, and Figs. (3 and 7 are diagrammatic views of still other positions of the parts.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the frame of the drawing press provided with the customary top arch 2 formed, in
the present instance, of spaced transverse members, 3 the blank holder mounted for vertical reciprocatory movements in guides formed by the frame sides, and 1 the plunger, which operates, in the present instance, through the blank holder 3 and carries the forming die. The main operating crank shaft 5 of the press is mounted in the cus tomary manner above the plunger and has one or more of its cranks operatingly corn nected to the plunger by connecting rods 6.
In carrying out my invention I provide the top arch 2 with av hollow frame part 7 open at its top and bottom and of rectangular form in cross section. A rock-shaft 8 is mounted in the frame part 7 above the arch 2 and in parallel relation to the crankshaft 5 and carries a lever member 9 for vertical rocking movements, said member having the arms 9 and 9 projecting in o-pposite directions from the shaft. A connecting rod 10 is mounted at its lower end on a centrally disposed crank of the crankshaft 5 and extends upward through the space be tween the members of the frame top arch 2 into the top frame 7 and connects at its upper end to the arm 9 of the lever 9 Serial No. 666,883.
whereby rocking movements are communicated to the lever from a turning of the crank-shaft 5.
The frame part 7, in the present instance, forms guides 10 and 11 at opposite sides of the shaft 8 in which slides 1.2 and 13 are respectively mounted for vertical reciprocatory movements. Shafts 1 1 and 15 are carried by the frame part- 7 and project through slots 16 and 17 in the respective slides 12 and 13, whereby the slides are permitted to have limited reciprocatory movements relative thereto. A shaft 18 is carried by the slide 12 above the shaft 14 and these shaft. are connected together by a set of toggle links 19, so that breaking and straightening out movements of the toggle links impart reciprocatory movements to the slide 12. A set of toggle links 20 in like manner connet-ts the shaft. 15 with a shaft 21 on the sllde 14, except that the shaft 12 is disposed below the shaft 15.
The lever arm 9 is connected by a link 22 to one of the links of the set 19, and a link 23 connects the arm 9 of the lever 9 to one of the links 20 so that rocking movements of the lever 9 impart simultaneous breaking and straig rhtening out movements to the sets of toggle links 19 and 20 and corresponding reciprocatory movements to the slides 12 and 13, except that they are moved in opposite directions, one moving upward while the other moves downward, and vice versa.
Rock shafts 24 and 25 are mounted in the frame 1 at opposite sides of the crank-shaft 5, the shaft 2% being disposed adjacent to and without the lower end of the slide 12, and the shaft 25 being disposed adjacent to and within. the lower end of the slide 13.
The shaft 24 has a centrally disposed arm 26 projecting inwardly therefrom and connected by a link 27 to the lower end of the slide 12 and the shaft 25 has an outwardly projecting centrally disposed arm 28 connected by a link 29 to the lower end of the slide 13, the connections between the slides 12 and 13 and the respective shafts 24 and 25 being such that corresponding rocking movements are communicated to the shafts from opposed reciprocatory movements of the slides, as is apparent.
The shaft 2t is provided near each end with an arm 30 connected by a respective IOU ill
link 31 to a boss 32 projecting outward from the adjacent side of the blank-holder 3, and the shaft 25 has an arm 33 projecting therefrom near each end and connected by a link 3% to a respective boss 35 on the adjacent side of the blank-holder 3.- The connections between the slides 12 and 13 and the blankholder are such, in the present instance, that when the slide 12 is at the upper extremity of its movement and the slide 13 is at the lower extremity of its movement, the blank holder 3 will bi at the lower point of its movement, and vice versa. This is accomplished by extending the arm 26 upward and inwardly at substantially a -15 degree angle to a vertical when the arms 30 are in downwardly extended vertical position and by ere tending the arm E28 outward and downward a substantially 45 degree angle to a vertical when the arms are in downwardly extended vertical position.
' It is evident that the means which i have employed for communicating the requisite reciprocatory movements and dwell to the blank holder 3 is comparatively simple in its construction and in its present embodiment comprises a single operating; connection with the crank shaft.
1 wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is ca pable of embodiment in numerous forms without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In combination with the frame. crank shaft and reciprocatoi v blank holder of a drawing press, a lever fulerumed midway of the frame and above the crank shaft, and having arms projecting towards opposite sides of the frame, operative connections between each arm and the blank holder on the side of the frame towards which the respective arm projects, and driving connections from the crank shalt to the lever.

6. The combination with the frame, crank shaft and the reciprocally movable blankholder of a drawing press, of a vertically rockable two-armed lever mounted in the frame in vertically spaced relation to the crank shaft, an operating connection between the crank shaft and. lever, a rock shaft mounted in the frame at each side thereof, connection between each rm-k-shal't and the bank-holder for rcci irrocalingr the latter from rocking: movcmei'ils oi the l'ormcr, and connection between each arm ol the lever and a respective rock shaft for communicating like rocking movements to both rock shafts from a rocking movement of the lever.
7. The combination with the frame, crank shaft, and reciprocatory blank holder of a drawing press, of a rock shaft mounted in the frame above and parallel with the crank shaft, connections between the rock shaft and crank shaft to oscillate the former from the latter, reci erocable slides on opposite sides of the axis of the rock shaft, means including a toggle for connecting each slide to the rock shaft, and means including a toggle for con necting each slide with the blank holder.
12. The combination with the frame, crank shaft, and reciprocatory blank holder of a drawing press, of a rock shaft mounted in the frame above and parallel. with the crank shaft, connections between the rock shaft and crank shaft to oscillate the former from the latter, reciprocable slides on opposite sides of the axis of the crank shaft, means including a toggle for connecting each slide to the rock shaft, and a toggle for connecting each slide to the blank holder, the relation of the parts being such that the said toggles are all straightened at the time blank holder is in holding position. 7
13. In combination with the frame, crank shaft and reciprocally movable blank holder of a drawing press, operative means for the opposite sides of the blank holder, each comprising a rock shaft journaled in the frame above the respective side, arms on the rock shaft, a link connecting one of the arms to the holder and proportioned so that they are substantially in line when the holder is in holding position, a slide above the rock shaft, a link connecting the slide to an arm on the shaft, a pivot on the slide, a vertically spaced pivot on the frame and a toggle having its ends mounted on the pivots and pro portioned to be substantially straight when the holder is in holding position, a lever fulcrumed' midway between the slides and having an arm extending towards each, a link connecting each arm of the lever with the knuckle of the toggle towards which it extends, the arm and link being so proportioned that they are substantially in line when the toggle is straightened, and means connecting the lever to the crank shaft.
14. In combination with the frame, crank shaft and reciprocally movable blank holder of a drawing press, operative means for the opposite sides of the blank holder, each comprising a rock shaft journaled in the frame above the respective side, arms on the rock shaft, a link connecting one of the arms to the holder and proportion-ed so that they are substantially in line when the holder is in holding position, a slide above the rock shaft, a link connecting the slide to one arm on the shaft, a pivot on the slide, a vertically spaced pivot on the frame and a toggle having its ends mounted on the pivots and proportioned to be substantially straight when the holder is in holding position, a lever fulcrumed midway between the slides and having an arm ext-ending towards each, a link connecting each arm of the lever with the knuckle of the toggle towaros which it extends, the ari n and link being so proportioned that they are substantially in line when the toggle .is straightened, and a link connecting an arm of the lever to a crank on the crank shaft.
15. A press comprising a crank shaft, ablank-holder, and means for operating said blank-holder, said means comprising rocking parts at each side of the press turning on axes parallel to said crank shaft, toggles between said rocking parts and said blankholder, a second rocking part nearer the middle of the press disposed above and turning on an axis parallel to said first rocking parts and crank shaft, connections between intermediate portions of said first and second rocking parts for transmitting movement from the latter to the former, and an operative connection between said crank shaft and second rocking part.
16. A press comprising a crank shaft, a blank-holder, and means for operating said blank-holder, said means comprising rocking parts at each side of the press turning on axes parallel to the crank shaft, toggles between said rocking parts and blank-holder, a second rocking part nearer the middle of the press, disposed above and turning on an axis parallel to said first rocking parts and crank shaft, connections between illtel'lIlG- diate portions of said first and second roclparts for transmitting: movement from the latter to the former, and an operative driving connection between the middle of the crank shaft and said second rocking]; part.
17. In a toggle press, a frame, a rock shaft in said frame, means for rocking said rock shaft, a pair of rock shafts disposed below and, at each side of said first rock shall, a slide intermediate each of said last rock shafts and said first rock shaft, means for connecting each slide to said first rock shalt, means for connecting each slide to one oi. said last rock shafts whereby rocking; movements of said first rock shaft operates to rock said second rock shafts in opposite directions, and means for operatively connecting said last rock shafts to said blankholder for reciprocation thereof.
