My invention relates presses and more particularly to a multiple action'power press of improved construction making for, a stronger crown, simplified assembly and the elimination of overhang at the sides of the crown. g
to multiple action power I 5 Claims. (01. 74-40) Many forms of multiple action power presses are known to the art. presses provided with. a plurality of slides in which one, is usually adapted to act as a blank holder to grip or hold work while another slide or slides is'performing actual shaping or forming operations. v I g In general the operating mechanism for the slides in the prior arthas employed a number of separate cranks usually spaced one from the other in order to'give the proper phase relations. This has entailedthe employment of a correspondingly large number of linkages which resulted in the provision of. an oversized crown havin awide lateral dimension and customary overhang of the main frame ofthe press to a considerable extent. The massive size of the crown of the press not only increased its cost and difficulty of assembly, but occupied a, large floor areain ,a manufacturin plant where space is frequently at a premium.
They comprise power It has been suggested; by man K; Johansri Patent 2,257,383, that the number .of cranks could be reduced by 1311811 156 of a; pair of gears' secured to a common crank which common crank wasemployed to operate the rocker member for one; of the SlideS. While this construction has been an improvement ov er some of the prior art;;yet the crown of the Johansenpress i s still formed with; an overhan at the sides of the press and the assembly is still complicated.
, e v Then too, in the Johansen construction there isconsiderable lateral thrust in the blank holder drive which reduces correspondingly the vertical thrust,
desired. 3 I v r Qne-object of my invention-is to provide a multiple action power. press having a pair .of slides, one of which is driven as 'a blank holder,
and the other of which is drivento dothe work,
of simplified construction.
Another object ofmy invention is to provide a double action. press employing adouble eccentricgear, thuseliminating the us of a pluralg r k gu Another object my A further object of my invention is to provide a doubl action power press in which the inner or workin slide is driven by an eccentric gear carrying a second eccentric driving the blank holder slide through a linkage to provide the proper phase relations between the two slides.
Still another object of my invention is to pro- 1 vide a multiple action power press having .a
crown of less width than the crowns of the presses of the prior art, yet stronger in construc tion.
Another object of my invention is to provide a multiple action power press in which the assembly of the press is simplified and in which overhanging portions of the crown are obviated.
Other and further objects of my invention will appear from the following description.
' In general my invention contemplates the provision of a pair of slides one of which is driven directly by an eccentric and the other is driven-* by a second eccentric formed integral with the first eccentric upon a gear, through a rocker shaft and-an appropriate linkage providing'for a proper period of dwell of the blank holder dur-' in the working part of the cycle of a second slide. Th use of two eccentrics upon a common gear establishes a predetermined phase relation f -'of the movement of the connecting rods or pitmans driven by the eccentrics and avoids the use of plurality of cranks for driving the respective slides.
Inthe accompanying drawings which form part 7 i of the instant specification and which are to be read therewith, and in which like reference num erals'are used to indicate like parts in the various views Figure 1 is a front elevation of a multiple action power press made in accordance with one embodiment of 'my invention.
Figuref2 is a fragmentary sectional elevation drawn on an'enlarge'd scale of the crown of the press shown in Figure 1.
invention is to provide a multiple action power press providing for the dwell of the blank holder slide with a reduced jacent its bottom. deadcenter four times through a very small amplitude. The amplitude ofthis oscillation is in the order of .003of an inch and is so small as to be within the range of elongation of the metal of the linkages and the tie rods. of the press. As a practical matter the blank holder dwells apparently immovably at bottom ;dead center to hold the work while work is being performed by the inner slide. 'Ihe ar;- rangement of parts is such that the rocker shaft driving eccentric, the connection between crank 96 and the link 94 and the connection between lower bell crank arm ll 6 and connecting rod H8 all arrive in the vicinity of their dead centers at substantially the same time. It is in this manner that the dwell is achieved by a continuously rotating drive with the use of only cranks and links.
The phase relationships of the movement of the blank holder with respect to the inner slide can be readily seen by reference to Figure 6. Starting from top dead center of the inner slide we find that the blank holder slide is already moving downwardy reaching its bottom dead center at approximately 90 at which point the period of dwell starts, during which there is the very slight oscillatory movement through a small amplitude which was described above. "The inner slide continues downwardly with simple harmonic motion and performs its work. At about 210 of travel of the eccentric gear the blank holder slide, the driving eccentric actuating which leads the eccentric which drives the inner slide, begins to move upwardly and'reaches its top dead center at about 320 while the inner slide continues its upward motion.
It is believed that the operation of my press will be clear from the foregoing description. It will be seen that I have accomplished the objects of my invention. I have provided a multiple action power press having a pair of slides, one of which is driven as a blank holder, and the other of which is driven to do the work, of simplified construction. I have provided a double action power press employing a double eccentric gear thus eliminating the use of plurality of cranks and providing a construction employing a reduced number of linkages and parts. I have provided a double action power press in which the forces are applied substantially vertically, thus reducing lateral thrust and enabling the use of a crown having less width. I have provided a multiple action power press in which the: assembly is simplified and in which the overhanging crown portions are obviated.
It will be understood that certain features and sub-combinations are of utility and may be employed without reference to otherffeatures and subcombinations. This is contemplated by and is within the scope of my claims.) It is further obvious that various changes may be made in details within the scope of my claims without departing from the spirit of my invention. It is, therefore, to be understood that my invention is not to be limited to the specific details shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
