UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DRAFTING TABLE.
Application filed June 1, 1923, Serial No. 642,756. Renewed November 9, 1926.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a firm .and rigid table for securely .holding drafting boards of comparatively large size and such as are used in architects, engineers and other oflices. An-
other object of the invention is to provide a drafting table possessed of the advantages above mentioned and of which the construction is comparatively simple and inexpensive yet very rigid, solid, durable and convenient.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description and the in vention may be generally stated to be embodied in a drafting table comprising in combination, a tubular metallic leg structure, and metallic top rails constituting a stand, and metallic end and side bars constituting a swinging frame pivoted to one of the top rails, and means for adjusting the swinging frame at various inclinations to the stand.
The invention also comprises the improvements tobe presently described and finally claimed.
In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drafting table embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of a part of the table drawn to an enlarged scale, and
Fig. 3 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, showing some of the parts detached.
In the drawin s 1 are tubular metallic legs, and 2 are tu ular metallic braces, and is a tubular metallic top rail, and 4 are metallic top rails of channel section, and these parts constitute a stand. 5 .are metallic side rails, and 6 is a metallic end rail, and 7 is an intermediate bar, and these parts constitute a swinging frame pivoted to the tubur lar top rail 3, and adapted to lie flush with the tops of the rails of channel section. 8 is a hand lever pivoted to the intermediate bar 7. 9 is a catch turnable on the tubular top rail 3 and adapted to receive the hand lever 8. 10 is a quadrant pivoted to the swinging frame and arranged to engage a locking bar 11 carried by the legs of the stand. 12 is a spring for holding the toothed quadrant 10 up to the bar 1].. 18 are spurs or projections extending upward. from the stand. and from the swinging frame for holding a drawing board. The stand and swinging frame are shown as pivotally connected by bending the ends of the side pieces of the frame around the top rail 3. The catch 9, while free to turn on the top rail 3, is held against end motion by collars 1-3.
Normally the hand lever 8 occupies the position shown in dotted lines at a, and in order to tilt the swinging frame the hand lever 8 is turned about its pivot 14 into engagement with the catch 9, as shown in full lines, and then by bearing down on the handle of the lever 8the latter turning with the catch 9 as a fulcrum affords a means for lifting the swinging frame to the required inclination in which osition it can be held by the toothed qua rants. By the same means the frame can be lowered flush with the top of the stand. The metallic parts may be connected by brazing and they are very firm and rigid yet not unduly heavy. The drafting table affords a solid support for a drawing board which can be easily made horizontal or inclined.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited as to those matters or otherwise than as the prior art and the appended. claims bination tubular metallic legs and tubular metallic braces and a tubular metallic top rail and metallic top rails of channel section constituting a stand, metallic side and end and intermediate bars constituting a swinging frame pivoted to the tubular top rail and adapted, to lie flush with the top rails of channel. section, a hand lever pivoted to the intermediate bar, a turnable catch on the top rail adapted to receive the hand lever, 10 and 'a normally engaging toothed quadrant and locking bar between the stand and frame.
