' BEDCLOTHES SUPPORT File d June 16, 1959 I 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inbentor I gl hozl/a Patented Mar. 18, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE 2.235.191 nancno'rrms surron'r Fir-min r. Arnonld, Boise, Idaho Application June 16, 1939, Serial No. 279,584 1 Claim. (01. -219) My invention relates to improvements-in means for raising and supporting the bedclothm on a bed so as to eliminate the pressure of the bedclothes on the feet of the occupant of the bed and 5 important objects of the invention are to provide an easily installed and adjusted arrangement of this character which can be folded fiat on the mattress when not in use, has means preventing the same from sliding completely under the mattress, and which is simple, inexpensive, and structurally strong.
Other important objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the following description and the drawings wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a left hand end perspective view showing the device in folded position.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device in operative position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary right hand side elevational view showing the device installed on a bed and in folded position.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showin the device in operative position.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 generally designates a transversely elongated rectangular channel iron frame with one flange projecting upwardly, the inside width-of the frame corresponding to the outside width of the mattress 6 and designedto rest on the bed spring (not shown) with the foot end of the mattress 6 received thereon and the bedclothes I draped thereover. Rising from the outer corner of the frame 5 are standards 8 and 9 which have connected between their upper ends a cross member III, of channel form and approximately on a level with the top of the mattress 6. Diagonal fiat braces I I, I2 extend between the tops of the standards 8 and 9 and are Joined to the vertical flange at the inner comers of the frame 5. Pivoted at the laterally outward sides of the adjacent fiangm at the upper ends of the standards 8 and 9 are the lower ends of the legs of a U -shaped fiat .bar to the middle of which is secured the apex of an inverted V-shaped brace II which has its laterally outward and depressed ends secured to points adjacent the lower ends of the legs of the bar I3. Respective toggle links II, It have their-opposite ends pivoted to the respective diagonal braces II, I! and the legs of the U-shaped bar It, the pivotal connections being sufiiciently frictional in character to require application of 5 slight force to fall and erect the blanket support which by the same token is held sumciently securely in either the folded position or the operative position into which it may be adjusted.
As shown in Figure 3 of the drawings the 10 blanket Su port lies flat on the top of the mattress holding the device from shifting in coniunc tion with the abutments provided by the braces l I, I2 and the cross member l0, and the upstanding flanges of the frame 6. In the operated posi- 1 tion the blanket support supports the blankets l in a sufiiciently elevated position to clear the feet of the occupant of the bed.
Although I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not de- 2( sire to limit the application of the invention thereto except as may be required by the scope of the subioined claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: 2: A bedclothes support comprising a first frame to underlie a mattress at the foot of a bed, a vertical extension fixed to rise from said first frame to a height substantially on a level with the top of the mattress and to extend vertically along the 3( end of the mattress, a side member extending between the upper part of said vertical extension and a remote part of the side of said first frame to lie along the side of .the mattress, said side member being rigidly connected to said vertical 3: extension and to said remote part of said first frame, a second frame arranged to lie flat on top of I the mattress when not in use and to project above the top of the mattress in vertical prolongation of said vertical extension when in use. 41 pivot means connecting the lower part of said second frame to the upper part of said vertical extension. and a collapsible toggle lever connected to and between said side member and said second frame for holding said second frame in 4. erect position.
