UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL LOUIS GRAUPNER, OF DRESDEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO UNIVERSELLE GIGARETTENMASCHINEN-FABRIK, J. C. MllLLER & CO.
ROD-CIGARETTE MACHINE.
Application filed February 21, 1925, Serial No. 10,847, and in Germany March 28, 1924.
This invention relates to cutting devices used with rod cigarette machines.
lVith modern high speed machines of this character there are special requirements to effect the movement of the rod cutting device ordinarily carried by double armed lever. VVhi'e on the onehand it is necessary to keep the moving mass as small as possible. on the other hand the extent of the rocking movement that serves for effecting the cutting operation is predetermined and therefore cannot be reduced, this movement taking only a small fraction of the total time of the rocking movement since the time available for the cutting operation is very short. In order to satisfy these two contrary requirements various suggestions have already been made without any satisfactory result.
Thus for instance it has been suggested to employ a crank and connecting rod mecha nism for actuating the doube armed lever carrying the cutting device so as to effect by suitable selection of the crank stroke a rapid cut while the further rocking movement of the cutter lever may be effected by the remaining crank movement. But it must. however, be remembered that for carrying out the cutting operation at most 80 degrees of the crank circle is available. This as shown in Fig. 1 gives a distance a: corresponding to the pat-h through which the rod cutter moves in penetrating the rod. As this path is fixed in size a crank circle must be selected providing a corresponding distance There is thus required a crank circle of comparatively large diameter as a consequence of which the total rocking movement of the cutter lever is considerably greater than that required.
In accordance with the invention the problem is solved by connecting to the free end of the double armed lever carrying the cutter a link which is pivotally connected also with a rock lever, the connecting rod being connected to the pivot which connects the link and the rock lever. As a result the long stroke of the connecting'rod is converted into a small rocking movement of the cutter carrving lever and simultaneously use is made of the property of the crank that the path of the cutter during the cutting operation takes place during the most rapid movement of the crank.
The movement is illustrated in diagram form in Fig. 1 in which a large distance 00' comes within an angle of 80 degrees.
The improved arrangement is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figs. 1. and 2 are side elevations of my device in different positions, and Figs. 1 and 1 are diagrams of the movement of the crank.
As shown the circular cutter a designed to sever the cigarette rod 7) is carried in known manner by the double-armed lever 0 which turns about the spindle (Z. This spindle cl is located on the usual cutter slides a which are reciprocated in known manner in the direction of the rod 7).
To the free end of the double armed lever is pivoted a link f which is connected by a pivot g with a rock lever 72. The rock lever h swings about the fixed pivot 2'. V
In the extended position of the link f and the rock lever 71. the longitudinal centre line of these parts is at right angles or approximately at right angles to the doub e armed lever 0.
The link 7 and lever it constitute or have the function of a toggle joint to whose pivot 0 is connected the pitman Kc of the crank Z, which is so disposed that said pitman in the extended position of the toggle joint is approximately at right angles to the com mon longitudinal central line of the link f and lever 71. The crank Z through its pitman in is adapted to operate said toggle joint so as to alternately extend'and collapse the same as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 respectively. thereby producing the desired effect.
.Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be per formed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In a cutting device for a rod cigarette machine, the combination with a circular cutter, of a double armed lever carrying said cutter and swinging around and reciprocating on its axis in the direction of the rod. a crank arm, a pitman, a link connected to the free end of said lever and a rock lever swinging on a fixed axis, both said rock lever and link being pivotally connected to said crank arm by said pitman for the purpose specified.
2. In a cutting device for a rod cigarette machinethe combination with a circular cutter, of a double armed lever carrying said cutter and swinging around and reciprocating on its axis in the direction of the rod.'a crank arm, a pitman, a link connected 10 to the free end of said lever and a rock lever swinging on a fixed axis, both said rock lever and link being pivotally connected to said crank arm by said pitman, said rock lever and linle when in extension of one another, being substantially at a right ang e both to said double armed lever and said crank arm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
PAUL LOUIS GRAUPNER.
