KNIFE SHARPENER.
Application filed-March- 30,1926. I Serial No. 98,5;76.
.This invention relates to unimproveddevice for sharpening knives.
The object. of the invention is to. provide a simple, durable and cheap, device for sharpening knives, andto this end the invention comprises a knife sharpener-embodying a holder with a pair of sharpener members .mountedthereon with ahrading vsurfaces oppositely disposed to each other and .lyinginplanes which, intersect adjacent .theirllower edges, the lower edges being notched, orhaving notches therein in stag geredrelation to each other.
'The invention consists in the improved l5 knife. sharpener and in the sharpener member ofsaid; knifesharpener as set forth in the following specification and particularly pQintcd-ont in the claims.
5 Referring; to the drawings F gure lis a. plan view of anembodiinent of one form of: our invention.
Fig. 2is a front elevation of the same.
. Fig. 31s. a. transverse section taken on the line 3-3, Figure 1.
Fig, i is, a perspective View of a sharpener member.
Fig. 5 is a transverse Section similar to Fig. fibut illustrating a modified form :of. sharpener members.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout: the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, referring to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, 5 is the holder for the sharpener members. This holder is preferably constructed of wood in two parts 6 and 7 joined together in any suitable manner as by dowels 8. The parts 6 and 7 are preferably convexly curved upon their upper ends and are provided with slots 9 and 10 respectively 4.0 in which are detachably positioned sharpener members 11 and 12.
These sharpener members are triangular in cross section, as illustrated in Figure 4 and have their three faces provided with abrading surfaces and with their edges provided with notches 13. When positioned in their respective slots 9 and 10 the sharpener members are clamped in the holder by screws 14, an abrading surface on one of the sharpener members being oppositely dis posed to the abrading surface on the other sharpener member, and the slots 9 and 10 are so positioned and related to each other that when the sharpener members are inknifesertedtherein their adjacent abrading surfaces will be positionedat an acuteangle and the planes ofsaid abrading surfaces will intersect eachother adjacent, the lower edges of the sharpener lnembers, that portion of thelower edge of the: sharpener members which is located between. notches therein, projecting into the. notchesofthe member opposite thereto, tha'tflis, the, notches are located in staggered relationi'to,each
other on the two, sharpener members, and
the portions betweenthe notches on [one member progectinto the notches on theother member.
In using the device the holder: is. screwed to a. suitable support 19, asillustrated in Figs. Zand 3., and the knife, is placed with its edge betweenthe a d]acen t surfacesof I theshar'pener member as illustrated indetted lines, Fig. 3-, and when being sharpened 1S drawn toward the user,;t hen l fted up, moved backwardly and lllEertcd again between the. sharpen member's end aga n drawn forward until the necessary sharp.-

ner as hereinbefore described in that embodiment of our invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, but differ therefrom in shape in that they are rectangular in cross section, whereas the sharpener members illustrated in said Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive are triangular in cross section. The sharpener members 15 and 16 are each provided with abrading surfaces on the opposite faces thereof and are provided with notches 17 and 18 in their edges which are for the same purpose as the notches 13 in the other form of our invention.
The operation of sharpening the knife is exactly the same as hereinbefore described in relation to the other form of our knife sharpener.
It will be seen by the construction hereinbefore set forth that either form of the knife sharpener-s illustrated may be withdraw from its slot in the holder and reversed, end
for end, or turned laterally so as to bring all abrading surfaces into use and all edges of the sharpener members into use.
WVe claim:
1. A knife sharpener having, in combina tion, a holder, a pair of triangular sharpener members each provided with a plurality of abrading surfaces detachably mounted upon said holder, with an abrading surface on one member oppositely disposed to an abrading surface on the other member and with said oppositely disposed abrading surfaces lying in planes which intersect each other at an acute angle adjacent their lower edges, said lower edges having notches therein in staggered'relation to each other.
2. A knife sharpener having, in combination, a holder, a pair of triangular sharpener members each provided with a plurality of abrading surfaces rigidly and detachably mounted upon said holder, with an abrading surface on one member oppositely disposed to an abrading surface on the other member and with said oppositely disposed abrading surfaces lying in planes which intersect each other at an acute angle adjacent their lower edges, said lower edges having notches therein in staggered relation to each other, the portion between the notches on the edge of one sharpener member projecting into the notches on the edge of the other sharpener member.
3. A knife sharpener having, in combination, a holder, a pair of sharpener members with abrading surfaces rigidly and detachably mounted in slots provided in said holder, with said abrading surfaces oppositely disposed to each other and with the abrading surfaces of said sharpener members lying in planes which intersect each other at an acute angle adjacent their lower edges, said lower edges having notches therein in staggered relation toeach other, and
means to clamp said sharpener members in said slots.
4. A knife sharpener having, in combination, a holder, a pair of triangular sharpener members with abrading surfaces detachably and reversably mounted in slots provided in said holder, with said abrading surfaces oppositely disposed to each other and with the abrading surfaces of said sharpener members lying in planes which intersect each other at an acute angle adjacent their lower edges, said lower edges having notches therein in staggered relation to each other, and means to clamp said sharpener members in said. slots.
5. A knife sharpener having, in combination, a holder, a pair of sharpener members polygonal in cross section, with abrading surfaces on a plurality of faces and detachably and reversibly mounted in slots pro-.
videdin said holder, with an abrading surface on one member opposltely disposed to an abrading surface on the other member,
said abrading surfaces lying in planes which intersect each other at an acute angle adjacent their lower edges, said lower edges having notches therein in staggered relation to each other.
6. A sharpener member for aknife sharpening device, the same beingpolygonal in cross section with abrading surfaces on a plurality of its faces and with notches provided in the edges thereof.
7. A sharpener member for a knife sharpening device, the same being triangular in cross section with abrading surfaces on a plurality of its faces and with notches provided in the edges thereof.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
