This invention relates to improvements in truck and wagon dumps such as used in grain elevators, and particularly to that type having a dumping platform adapted to be used with sleds and wagons, and in connection therewith an auxiliary platform for lengthening the same to be used when trucks are dumped.
The object of my invention is to provide in connection therewith a fluid operated cylinder for elevating and lowering the free end of the main. platform, and in connection with said platform means whereby the auxiliary platform may be locked to the main platform, whereby the two platforms may be operated in unison by a single operating cylinder.
A further object is to provide improved means whereby the wagon will be automatically. blocked against rearward movement while the dumping platform is being elevated.
A further object is to provide in connection with a dumping platform a tilting blocking member for engaging the rear wheels of the vehicle to prevent the vehicle from moving rearwardly as the forward end of the platform is being elevated, said blocking member being designed to form a part of the floorconstruction when in its normal position of movement, said blocking member being also pivoted to swing in the opposite direction from the tilting platform and to assume an inclination greater than the platform while the platform is being moved from its horizontal position.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate the floor of the grain elevator beneath which is a pit 11 and grain bins 12 and 13. The floor 10 is provided with the usual grain door opening 14 above both of the bins 12 and 13. A separating partition 15 between the bins has at its upper edge a pivoted valve 16 by means of which the grain may be delivered to either-of the bins 12 or 13. The opening 14 is provided with a door 17 mounted on hinges 18. The floor 10 is provided with an opening 19 for the purpose of receiving the dumping mechanism. The opening 19 is of a width and length greater than the width and length of the carrying vehicle, said opening 19 being above the pit 11.
The floor 10 is supported by means of transversely arranged beams 20 and 21 designed to support and carry longitudinally extending joists 22. Pivotally mounted to the top edge of the joists adjacent to. the side of the floor opening 19 is a transversely arranged shaft 23 secured thereto by means of a U-bolt 24. Rigidly secured to the shaft 23 is a series of platform supporting joists 25 supported at their rear ends by means of a cross beam 26 which is supported by U-bolts 27. The forward ends of'the members 25 are supported on a cross beam 28. The said cross beam 28 is supported through a fluid lift device comprising an upright cylinder 29 having its lower end mounted on a pivot member 30, said cylinder being provided with a piston 31 and a piston rod 32 which extends upwardly through the upper end of the cylinder and is pivotally connected to, a shoe 33, said shoe being secured to the under surface of the beam 28. The piston 31 may beelevated either by air or by a liquid, but preferably by air, which is conducted to the said cylinder by means of a pipe 34;, said pipe including a pressure gauge 35 and a control valve 36. The upper surfaces of the joists 25 are provided with a floor member 37. The shaft 23 is located at a point forward of the rear end of the joists 25 so that a rearwardly extending portion 38 of the floor member 37 is provided.

The rear edge of the member 38 is provided with a pivoted leaf 39 secured to a shaft 40 by means of strap irons 41. The free edge of the member 89 rests on the upper edge of the joists '25 when the platform is in its normal position of movement.
Mounted in the members 22 is a transversely arranged shaft 42. Pivotally mounted at each end of the shaft 42 is a pair of longitudinally extending joist members 43, said joist members being so mounted that the rear ends of the members 25 will rest between them, as clearly shown in Figure 1. The upper edges of the joists 43 are provided with a floor member 44. The forward edge of the floor member 44 rests on the upper edge of the members 25 when the platform is in its normal position. The joists 43 are mounted between the said joists 25, as clearly shown in Figure 5. The low-er one of each of the straps 41 is provided with a rearwardly extending loop portion 45, said loop portions being designed to rest adjacent to one side of one of the members 43. Each pair of members 43 is provided with a pin 46 designed to pass through the loop portion and to slidably and pivot-ally connect the forward ends of the members 43 with the rear edge of the member 39. The rear edges of the members 43 and 44 are provided with a curved plate 47 arranged concentrically with the shaft 42. Said plate 47 serves to provide a shield to prevent scattered grain from entering the pit 11 while the wagon is being dumped. The rear ends of the members 43 are designed to rest on the block 48 when the said members 43 are in a normal position, which provides means for areventing the rear end of the member 44 rom being moved downwardly as the vehicle wheels pass over the same.
Extending longitudinally between each pair of joists 25 and 22 is a joist 49. The rear end of each of the members 49 is pivotally connected to the shaft 23 by ,means of The forward ends of the members 49 are provided with a floor member 51. The under surface of the floor member 51 is provided with a series of longitudinally ex tending joists 52 which have their forward ends connected to a, transversely arranged.
header 53, said header being connected with the members 49. Said header 53 is designed to rest on the cross beams 20. The rear ends of the joists 52 are supported on a cross beam54 connected to the members 49 by means of a bolt 55. The floor 51 and the members 53 together with the beams 49 form what I shall term the auxiliary platform. The rear end of the auxiliary platform rests adjacent to the forward end of the main platform 37.
Topro'vide means for connecting the auxiliary platform and the main platform together when so desired, I have formed in the rear end of the members 52 notches 56, said notches being designed to receive loop portions 57 of a shaft 58, said shaft being rotatively mounted in the forward ends of the members 25. The shaft 58 is provided with an upwardly extending arm 59. the upper end of which is provided with a link 60 slidably supported in a cross member 61 extending between two of the members 25. The link 60 is provided with a spring 62 which provides means whereby the upper end of the lever 59 will be yieldably moved to its forward position with the loop portions 57 resting in the notches 56. This providesmeans whereby the auxiliary platform and the main platform may be connected together in such a. manner that when the main platform is elevated through the piston 31, the auxiliary platform will also be elevated.
For releasing the loop or latch member 57 from the notches 56, I have provided a cable 63 connected to one end of the member 60. Said cable passes through pulleys 64 to a push rod 65 which is mounted vertically and slidably in the floor 10. The upper end of the rod 65 and the head 66 provide means that may be operated by the operators foot for placing tension on the cable 63, and provides means for movingthe upper end of the lever 59 rearwardly against the action of the spring 62. This will permit the main plat-v form 37 to be elevated without elevating the auxiliary platform.
The under surface of the member 28 is provided with a guard 67 which serves to prevent draft animals from hacking into the opening 19 while the main platform is elevated. V
The operation of my device is as follows:
Assuming that both of the platforms are in a normal position, and assuming that a wagon is driven to position on the main platform 37 with the rear wheels resting on the member 39 and the front wheels on the forward end of the member 37, the draft animals will be standing on the platform 51. The latch member 57 is then released from the notches 56 and the valve 36 opened, which will cause air to enter the cylinder 29 beneath the piston 31 and the connecting rod 32 to be elevated. which will cause the for- Ill) ill
the inner faces of the members 22, in the manner clearly shown in Figure 6. This will cause the member i l to be rapidly tilted to an inclined position, as shown in Figure (5, at an angle considerably greater than the angle of the platform 37, so that the member 44- will serve to form a block to prevent the wagon or truck from running rearwardly. The parts are so arranged that the member it will be moved to this position rapidly before the platform 37 has reached much of an inclination. platform 37 is further elevated, the member 39 will assume a horizontal position and rest on the horizontal portion of the member 68, while the member 3) will rest on the forwardly extending inclined portion of the members 68, and the member 44: will rest on the rearwardly inclined portion of said members 68.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided means whereby the wagon or truck will be blocked against rearward movement when the platform is in an inclined position. The door 17 may then be thrown to an open posi tion, as shown in Figure 3, after which the end boards of the wagon box may be removed and the grainpermitted to flow into the bins through the opening 14. As soon as the grain has been dumped, the platform may be lowered and the device is then ready to receive a truck or another wagon.
If a truck is to be dumped, the forward wheels of the truck will rest on the platform 51, in which case the latch member 57 is retained in the notches 56 and the platforms 51 and 37 will be elevated in unison. The dumping action will otherwise be the same as above described.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided an improved grain dump of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, in which is provided means for automatically blocking the wagon or truck against rearward movement while the forward end of the truck or wagon is being elevated.
It will further be seen that I have provided improved means whereby the main platform and the auxiliary platform may be locked together so the main platform may be elevated separately or the two platforms in unison.
I claim as my invention:
1. A combination truck and wagon dump, a supporting frame, a platform, means pivotally mounting said platform near one of its ends, a leaf pivotally connected to the shorter end of said platform, a blocking member pivoted to said frame and having one of its edges adjacent to the free edge of said leaf, and means for pivotally and slid ably connecting the adjacent edges of said leaf and said blocking member.

ing frame, a platform, means pivotally mounting said plat'forn'i near its rear end, a blocking member pivotally mounted in said frame, said blocking member being designed to form a portion of the floor construction having its forward edge adjacent to the rear edge of said platform, and means slidably and pivotally connecting the adjacent edges of said platform and blocking member so that when the forward end of said platform is elevated its rear end will be lowered, causing the said blocking member to be tilted in a reverse direction, the distance between the pivot center of said connecting means and the center of said platform being greater than the distance between the center of said pivoting means and the center of said blocking member, so that when a given inclined movement has been imparted to the platform a greater inclined movement will be imparted to said blocking member in the 0pposite direction.

A wagon dump comprising a supporting frame, a platform pivotally mounted therein, the pivot of said platform being near its rear end, a leaf pivotally mounted to the rear edge of said platform, a blockmg member pivotally mounted in said frame having its forward edge adjacent to the rear edge of said leaf, means for slidably and pivotally connecting the adjacent edges of said leaf and said blocking member together, and means for supporting said platform, said leaf and said blocking member in a common plane when the said platform is in its horizontal position of movement so that the said platform, said leaf and said blockgng member form a. portion of a floor strucure.

A wagon dump comprising a support 111g frame, a platform pivotally mounted in said frame, the pivot of said platform being near the rear end of said platform, means for elevating the forward end of said platform, a leaf pivotally connected to the rear edge of said platform, a blocking member pivotally mounted in said frame with its forward edge adjacent to the rear edge of said leaf, means for pivotally and slidably connecting the adjacent edges of said leaf and said blocking member, means for supporting said platform, said leaf and said blocking member in acommon plane when the platform is in a'horizontal position, means for supportingthe rear end of said platform in a downwardly and rearwardly inclined position, said leaf in a horizontal position and said blocking member in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position with the inclination of said blocking member greater in respect to the horizontal than to the said platform. i

A combination truck and wagon dump comprising a rectangular supporting frame, a pivoted shaft arranged transversely across said frame, a pair of spaced parallel and longitudinally extending beams having their rear ends pivotally mounted on said pivot member, an auxiliary platform secured to the forward end of said beams, a second member pivotally mounted in said frame member forming a portion of the floor of said frame, means for pivotally and slidably connecting the adjacent edges of said blocking member and said leaf, means for elevating and lowering the forward end of said second platform, and means for detachably connecting the forward end of said second platform with the rear end of said auxiliary platform.
