Application filed December This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in milling machine collet and end mill, and the primary object thereof is to provide an improved construction which enables the cost of the high speed steel cutters to be maintained at a minimum.
The prevailing custom is to form the cutter and its holder in one piece with consequent high cost, the present invention aiming to provide a holder which can .be made of cheap material thereby to reduce the cost of the cutter. c
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder which may be used either with a double end cutter or mill or with a single end cutter, and to further provide a holder which effectively secures the cutter and holds same againstv rotation and which enables same tobe easily applied and re-, moved.

In proceeding in accordance with the resent invention, a holder is employed w ich consists of a shank 1 having a head 2 exteriorly threaded at 3. The shank is formed with a bore 4 which latter has a bevelled or flared outer wall or end 5 that extends through the outer face of the head. A cap or nut 6 hasa bore 7 of uniform diameter which closely fits over the smooth uniformdiametered part of the periphery of the head and which bore has threads 8 that engage with the threads 3 of the head. The outer end of the nut or cap is contracted and formed with a beveled wall 9 and with a circular shoulder 10. The usual wrench receiving holes 11 are. also provided inthe cap. The outer end face of the head is formed with preferably a pair of diametrically opposed openings 12for a purpose now to be described.
In Figures 2 and 5 of the drawings a' double end cutter is depicted and wherein a shank 13 has a cutter 14 on each end there of. A central ring 15 is shrunk onto the 3, 1925. Serial No. 72,943.
shank at the center thereof and is flanked on either side bybevelled rings 16, the taper ofwhich latter rings corresponds. to that of the beveled .parts of thenut orcap and of theouterend of theholder. In Figure 6 of the drawings. assingleend cutter is illustrated, and wherein a-shank 18 has a cutter 19 on one end and a central ring :20 flanked by bevelled 'rings 21, on its other end, the central ringhaving apair of wi gs 22. I
The three rings and thawings are identical with those shown in Figures 2 and 5-of the drawings.

thus securely holding the cutter in position,
The wings prevent rotation of the cutter, while the uniform bore of the cap or nut affords a firm seat or support therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. In a device of the type set forth, a holder having a shank formed with a bore and having a head formed with a flared opening, leading into the bore to form a bevelled wall, said head having a threaded peripheral portion and a smooth uniformeddianietered portion, the outer end face of the head being formed with a pair of opposed cut-outs, a cutter having a central ring provided with wings projecting outwardly from its periphery and received in the cut outs, a bevelled ring on each side of the central ringand one of which engages said bevelled wall of the head, and a nut threaded on the head and engaged with said smooth portion thereof and having a beveled wall to engage the outer bevelled ring.
2. In a device of the type set forth a llO holder having a shank and a head, said head havlng a flared opening in its outer end 'forming a beveled wall and having a cut-out in the end face thereof, a cutter having a central ring provided with a wing received in said cut-out and having beveled rings on opposite sides of the central ring and one of which engages the beveled wall of the head, and a nut on the head having a beveled wall to engage the outer ring.
3. In combination with a holder having a head formed with a flared socket and having anoutwardly opening cut-out in its end, a Cutter having a win received in said cut-out and having beveled parts on opposite sides of the wing and one of which parts engages the flared socket, and means on the head engaging the other of the beveled parts to cure the cutter to the head.
' 4. In combination with a holder having a head formed with a flared opening providing a beveled wall, alcutter having opposite and similarly beveled walls one of which engages the beveled wall of the head, interengaging means independent of all of said walls between the cutter and head to hold the parts against relative turning, and a cap to secure the cutter to the holder and to hold the interengaging means against releasing movement having a beveled wall engaging the other beveled wall of the cutter.
5. In combination with a holder having a head formed with a flared opening providing a beveled wall, a cutter having opposite and similarly beveled walls, one of which engages the beveled wall of the head, a cap to secure the cutter to the holder having a beveled wall engaging-the other beveled wall of the cutter, and means independent of the cap to hold the cutter against turning movement. o
6. In combination with a holder having a socket, a cutter having a pair of similar parts intermediate its ends, either of which is engageable in the socket, said. holder having a cut-out providing opposed walls e-X- tendingsubstantially axially of the holder, a projection on the cutter betwe n said pair of pa ts thereof received between said walls and engageable in the socket in either position of said parts and means to securethe cutter to the holder engageable with the other of said parts thereof.
7. in combination with a holding element having asocket, a cutting element having a pair of similar parts intermediate its ends, either of which is engage-ablein thesocliet, complementary means on the holuingelement and on the cutting element and dis posed between said pair of parts of the latter to hold the cutting element against rotation relative to the holding element in either position of said parts including spaced opposed walls extending axially of oneof said elements and a part on the other of said elements received between the walls, and means to secure the cutting element to the holding element engageable Nlbll the other of said parts thereof. 7
