777,283. Cutter-bars. WINTER, W. March 14, 1955, No. 7360/55. Class 83 (3). An expanding tool-holder for cutter heads and boring- bars comprises a conical clamp-sleeve and a clamping- means serving to expand the sleeve into engagement with a housing and in screwed engagement with the toolshank of conical form, and is characterized in that the clamping means comprises a clamping - cone operatively associated with adjusting- means in screwed engagement with an internal thread of the housing, said clamping- cone engaging a first coned section of the clamp-sleeve, while a second coned-section thereof is engaged by the conical part of the toolshank, and that both the clamping-means and the adjusting-means are engageable by separate key-means. The tool 1 has part of the shank of conical form and the remainder 9 is screwed. A split clamping-sleeve 3 is interposed between the tool and the housing 2a in a boring-bar &c. 2. The conical part of the tool-shank engages a similar part in the sleeve and is drawn into the latter by a screwed clamping-member 5. This member has a conical expander-part 4 which may be integral with or secured to it. An adjusting-member 6 is located between a shoulder 5b on the clamping-member and the expander-part and is screwed externally to engage the threads 2b on the interior of the housing. Both the clamping- and the adjusting-members have slots in their outwardlyfacing ends to engage adjusting keys. The two forms of key required to make the adjustments may be provided on the opposite ends of a bent rod, but a combination tool comprising an inner member 8 and an outer sleeve 7 may be employed. A modified adjusting-means comprises an adjusting-nut with internal and external threads of different pitch to give a differential action.
