J. E. SHIPPS HANGING SIGN Filed March 1. 192a Hive/"7513a man? Inventor IZZSfi/ J q Attorney Patented Feb. 22, 1927.
JUDD E. SHIPPS, OF WESTPOINT, NEBRASKA.
HANGING SIGN. a i
Application filed March 1, 1926. Serial No. 91,465.
My present invention has to do with signs of the hanging type; and it contemplates the provision of a hanging sign of exceedingly simple and inexpensive construction,
5 designed more especially for suspension from a barbed wire of a fence, and constructed in such manner as not to interfere with the barbs of the wire, and also constructed in such manner that it is securely attached to the wire without the assistance of extraneous means, and practically without the employment of tools.
Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which 1- Figure 1 is a view showing in side elevation the sign constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am aware as the sign appears when secured upon a barbed wire and adapted to swing thereof.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective showing one end portion of the sign as the same appears precedent to being manipulated incident to its attachment to a wire.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
I show in Figure 1 a conventional wire 1, equipped at intervals in its length with barbs 2. and I also show in said figure my novel sign attached toand suspended from said wire.
'10 My invention contemplates the provision of a sign shaped as illustrated, formed of bendable sheet metal, and as shown the sign comprises a body or ed to bear an advertisement or advertisements upon one or both of its sides and also adapted to rest in spaced relation to the wire 1 as designated by 4 in Figure 1, so that no one of the barbs 2 of the wire will interfere in any measure with free swinging of the sign under the action of wind. In addition to the body or major portion 3 the sign comprises end reduced portions constituting arms 5, the said arms being tapered toward their ends as designated by 6, and being provided in their ends with kerfs 7 of about the proportional length illustrated.
major portion 3 adapt-' Said kerfs are formed to provide terminal fastening portions 8 on the arms 5, as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
When my novel sign is to be placed in use, the arms 5 are looped or bent over the wire 1 after the manner illustrated, and the reduced ends of the arms are passed through apertures 9 in the sign, and are then bent, preferably in reversed direction, as indicated by 10, in Figure 1, and this against the face of the sign as will be readily understood by comparison of Figures 1 and 2.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that when a plurality of my novel signs are in a fiat state, a large number of the signs may be stored orshipped in a space of small.
compass; and it will also be appreciated that the sign is susceptible of quick and easy application to a barbed wire in the manner described, and when so applied the sign is adapted to swing under the action of wind, and'n its swinging movement the sign is not interfered with in any degree by the barbs of the wire 1, this being due to the provision of the space 4 between the arms 5 and above the major portion of the sign.
While designed more especially for roadside use I would have it understood that my novel sign may be used in any other relation to which it is applicable.
I would also have it understood that it is within the purview of my invention to provide the sign either on the roadside face of thesign or on both faces of the sign as may be deemed expedient by the manufacturer.
My novel sign is further advantageous because it is adapted to be cheaply produced or struck from sheet metal, and because of the facility with which it may be put into use, and also because of the compact manner in which a large number of the signs may be packed for storage or shipment.
While I prefer in the practice of my invention to employ the precise construction illustrated, for the reasons indicated, I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to said precise construction, my invention being defined by my appended claim within the scope of which modifications may be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention. what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a sign forum-id in one piece and adttpted Without the assistance of extraneous means to be suspended from a barbed WIN) so as to treely swing thereon; said sign made up of arbody or base portion with longitudinally extending; slots formed adjacent to each end and slightly below its upper edge and spaced arms reaching from szlid upper edge of the body or base portion at the ends thereof and adapted to be loopedor bent over a wire and havinghnrgitudinally kerfed and tupered end portions adapted to pass through the slots and securedby bending adjacent the major portion or body the tabs provided by said kerfs, and the said arms being of sulfieient length, width, and being tapered to engage in the slots to provide a space between the upper edge of the body or major portion and a wire after the bending or looping of the arms over the Wire.
In testimony whereof I nffi'x my 'sigimtnre JUDDE. SHIPPS.
