GEORGE VASI-IINGTON NEIVMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE AS- SIGNMENTS, TO WILSON-JONES COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, .A CORPORA- TICE OF MASSACHUSETTS.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed September 23, 1922. Serial No. 590,144.
lIhis invention relates to loose leaf binders of that type in which the upper cover is removably locked to the impaling posts.' It is an object of this invention to provide an improved structure embodying,
i among other features, novel mechanism for locking the upper cover to the impaling posts. Y
Other and further objects will be apparent from the following desciption and disclosures.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an assembled binder.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the upper clamping member.
Figure 3 is an enlarged horizontal section through the upper clamping member.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is an enlarged end view of the clamping member.
In the drawing, the binder is represented as comprising an upper cover 1 and a lower cover 2 between which the loose leaves are removably impaled, upo-n the posts 3, which are secured upon the lower cover and extend through the upper cover and through a hollow clamping member 4 secured to the rear portion of the upper cover. Shiftable mec-hanism is provided within the hollow clamping member for locking the same together' with the upper cover upon the impaling posts in any adjusted position of the cover according to the thickness of the volume of contained leaves.
rIhe hollow clamping member 4 is preferably made oblong in cross section with rounded edges and of sheet metal with suitable spaced apertures to receive the impaling posts 3. YIhre ends of the member are preferably closed by suitable end plugs 5 and G.
A pair of slidablemembers 7 and 8 are supported within the hollow clamping niember 4 and are provided with notches 9 to engage the posts 3. These slidable members are preferably formed of sheet-metal plates, the member 8 being provided with oppositely flaring portions 10 in its edges for centrally supporting the same in the hollow member; while the member 7 is supported upon the bottom of the said clamping member.
An adjusting screw 11 is journalled in the right-hand plug 5 and in a bracket 12, and extends through an internally threaded tubular socket 13 integral with or connected 'to the slidable member 7 g the forward end of the screw being rotatably anchored to the member 8 which is slightly spaced from the member 7 when in operative position, while the rear end is provided with a key or wrench head projecting into a socket in the plug. 5. A pin 14 may extend through the clamping member 4 and through a notch or slot in the end of the slidable member 7 for guiding and limiting its movements, and the edge of the slidable member 7 opposite the socket 13 is preferably curled upwardly in conformity with the inner surface of the clamping member 4 to provide greater stability.
In the operation of the binder, a key is adapted to be applied to the protruding end of the screw 11 for rotating the same. During one direction of rotation, the slidable members 7 and 8 will be contracted or shifted together tol unlock the same from engagement with the impaling posts 3, whereby the cover 1 may be removed for the insertion or removal'of loose leaves. The opposite direction of rotation of the screw will spread or expand the slidable members 7 and 8 so that they will simultaneously engage the impaling posts and lock the cover in position as is obvious.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted other wise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
In a loose leaf binder, a base, a pair of impaling posts rising from said base, a cover, a fiat tubular member hinged to said cover and provided with apertures for receiving said impaling posts, a pair of relatively slidable plates in said tubular member, one plate havin` a coiled margin internal-ly threaded and fitting one side of the tubular member, the opposite margin of said plate beingcoiled to fit the opposite side of the tubular member, the other plate having its margine provided with oppositely flaring guide por tions, and a screw connectin` said plates and adapted to be operated from the exterior oi' the binder. v
In testimony whereof l have hereunto subscribed my naine.
