Description

H. H. LAMPERT POST CAP Filed March 15. 1926 Patented Dec. 2&5, l925.
HENRY I-I. 'LAMPERT, OE CHCAGO, ILLINS.
POST CAP.
Application filed March 13, 1826.
The main objects of this invention are to provide improved means for attaching a cross-beam on the end of a post; and to provide an improved form of post cap especially adapted for dctachably securing a stringer to the post of a temporary structure.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a perspective View of an improved post cap, showing it applied to an upright post for supporting a horizontal Stringer which is illustrated in dotted outline.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, the stringer being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. l is a horizontal section taken on the line 4-41 of Fig. 2.
In the specific form herein shown, the improved cap comprises a collar adapted to fit over the end of the post and having a seat on which the cross beam or stringer is sup- 25 ported.
The specific means for adjustably securing the cap to the post is illustrated in my co-pending applications, Serial No. 80,109, tiled January S, 1920, and No. 88,250, tiled February 15, 1920, which show a Wedge supported in a keyivay in the collar in position to engage one face of the post. ln the constructions shown in said co-pending applications, the cross piece or Stringer is nailed or bolted to the cap. In the device to which this invention is applied, the cross piece is detachably secured to the cap by a Wedge seated in a heyway arranged on the collar.
In the form shown, the invention is applied to a cap l. mounted on the end of a post 2 for supporting a cross beam or Stringer 3.
The improved cap l is preferably a metal casting having a collar l provided with a socket 5 which is adapted to iit over the end of the post 2. Extending across the top of the collar t, is a base part 6, which forms -i seat for supporting the Stringer 3. Formed on the base part 6, is a pair of substantially parallel flanges 7 and 8 adapted to embrace the Stringer. The flange 8 is provided With a keyvvay 9, in which is seated a Wedge l0 Serial No. 34,554.
adapted to be driven into engagement with the adjacent face of the Stringer for clamping the stringer to the cap. The Wedge 10 is secured against removal from the cap by a pin 11 mounted in the keyivay 9 and extending througl'i a slot l2 in the Wedge.
Arranged in one wall of the collar 4, is a transversely disposed keyway 13 forming a seat for a wedge 14 which is adapted to be driven into position for adjustably clamp` ing the cap to the post 2.
rllhe operation of assembling a temporary structure With this improved cap is believed to be obvious from the foregoing description.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it Will be understood that certain details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted Without departing from the spirit of this invention as dened by the following claims.
I claim:
l. A post cap of inverted cup shape adapted to t over the end of a post, the base of said cup-shaped cap forming a substantially llat bearing plate adapted to bear against the extremity of the post, a seat on the outer face of said bearing plate for supporting a cross beam, a keyway arranged at one side of said seat, and a Wedge in said keyway adapted for engagement Willi the cross beam.
2. A post cap oit' inverted cup shape adapted to fit over the end of a post, the base of said cup-shaped cap forming a substantially fiat bearing plate adapted to bear against the extremity of the post, a seat on the outer face of said bearing plate for supporting a cross beam, a pair of flanges on said seat adapted to embrace the beam, a lreyway in one of said langes, and a Wedge in said keyivay adapted for engagement with. the cross beam.
3. A post cap of inverted cup-shape adapted to lit over the end of a post, the base of said cup-shaped cap forming a substantially flat bearing plate adapted to bear against the extremity of the post, the outer face of said bearing plate forming a seat for support ing a cross beam, a pair of substantially parallel flanges on said seat and spaced inwardly from thel side edges thereof for embracing the beam, Webs on said seat between said a pin in said keyway extending through a Hanges and the adjacent side edges of said slot in said wedge -for securing said Wedge cap for bracing said flanges, a keyway exagainst removal from said keyway. 10 tending through one of said flanges and its Signed at Chicago this 11th day of March,
5 related Webs in substantially parallel relation 1926.
to said bearing plate, a Wedge in said keyway adapted to engage the cross beam, and HENRY H. LAMPERT.
