TOY BUILDING-r BLOCK.
Application filed. August 22, 1925. Serial Nb. 51,771.
lhis invention relates to improvements in toy building blocks and has for an object the provision of set of blocks having a novel form of interlocking engagement, so that buildings or structures of various kinds and designs may be made, the interlocking means acting to hold the blocks against pivotal as well as relative sliding movement either when arranged in rows as in a straight wall, or disposed at rightangles in either direction.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a block of this character which may be constructed from single piece of sheet metal and shaped to provide a hollow member which is light, durable and economical in construction and which may be attractively colored or decorated.
Vfith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
in the drawings Figure l is a perspective view showing a portion of an enclosure constructed with blocks made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the blocks.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the 0pposite face of the block from that illustrated in Figure 2.
Figure at is a plan view of the blank from which the block is made.
Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the block which constitutes the present invention may be made of different shapes and dimensions so as to provide a set of blocks from which buildings or structures of different types n'iay be made. lhere is illustrated however a block which is indicated at 10 and which is shaped sub stantially to conform to the shape of a brick so that it may be arranged in the manner shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. To provide for this there is also what may be termed a half block 11, in that it is one half the size of the block 10.
The block 10 is formed of a sheet of metal shaped as illustrated in Figure 4 and comprises a face 12, sides 13, ends 1% and face 15, the latter being directly opposite the face 12 and having spaced fiat lugs 16 extending therefrom. The lugs 16 are adapted for removable engagement with spaced slots 17 provided in the face 12, the said slots being crossed and arranged so as to receive the lugs of adjacent blocks when the latter are arranged in rows one upon the other, or at right angles in either direction as at the corners of a structure, this last mentioned arrangement being indicated at C in Figure 1. By having the slots and lugs arranged in the manner shown, relative pivotal movement as well as relative sliding movement between the blocks will be prevented. This is especially desirable in the use of the half blocks 11 where these blocks are arranged one upon the other in pillar formation.
The blocks 11 are constr cted substantially the same as the blocks 10 exceptthat they are just one half the size of the latter blocks and contain only one pair of crossed slots 17.
While blocks of only two different types are illustrated, it is of course obvious that the shapes or designs of the block may be varied, the invention especially residing in the manner of interlocking engagement be tween the blocks and the manner in which the blocks are constructed.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A toy building block formed from a single sheet of metal cut and shaped to provide a hollow member have spaced centrally ocated longitudinally disposed crossed slots '11 one face thereof andspaced fiat projecttions extending O1l'l the opposite face for removable on ,ement in the slots of an adjacent block to prevent relative sliding and aivotal movement of the blocks.
set of toy building blocks, each comprising rectangular member having centrally located longitudinally disposed spaced slots in one face thereof and transversely disposed slots centrally intersecting the longitudinal slets and of the szune length as the later, said slots having their inner ends spaced from the side and end edges of the 5 blocks, and centrally located longitudinally aligned projections extending from the opposite face of the block, said projections being of substantially the same length as the slots and adapted for removable engagement Within eitheithe longitudinally 10 or transversely disposed slots.
in testiineny whereof 1 {till any signature.
