Description

June 3, 1930. J. SALMI NOVELTY CAN Filed May 28, 1929 In venior Q/OJEPHJPILMA Patented June 3, 1930 JOSEPH SALMI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NOVELTY can Application filed May 28,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in novelty cans, and aims to provide a can of circular shape that is adapted for use in the dispensing of candy I, and other confections to children, the can being so constructed that after the contents have been taken therefrom, air wings can be associated therewith to enable the can to be propelled along the surface of the pavement. by the force of the wind.
It is well known that smali children will pick up certain cans and try to roll them along the sidewalk. Usually, such attempts result in the cans rolling into the street or frequently, not rolling at all. The present invention will overcome this and will enable the children to make use of the can as a highly amusing toy after the contents have been removed from the can.
Furthermore, if desired, the can may be used in association witha handle and when held in the air, the force of the breeze will cause the can to rotate, somewhat simulating the well-known pin-wheel.
In the drawing, wherein there is disclosed V the preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure l is a plan view of the. can in its normal condition for use in the dispensing of confections.
Figure 2 is a detailed longitudinal section through the can. 7
Figure 3 is a side elevation disclosing the can when in use as a toy, to enable the wind to propel the can along the side walk, and Figure 4 is a top plan view of the can after being formed to provide the toy, in this in. stance, the can being illustrated as associated with a suitable handle member. 7
Now having particular reference to the drawing, the can illustrated therein consists of the usual interfitting sections 5-5 of circular formation. Thistype of can iswell known and it is used in the dispensing of confections of various sorts, especially confections suitable for consumption by children. I r
I In carrying outthe present invention, the
main walls of thesections 55 are formed surrounding the centers thereof with V- 0 shaped ineisions6, that radiate from a point 1929. Serial No. 366,734.
adjacent the center of each section, as more clearly illustrated in Figure 1. After the contents have been removed from the can, the material within the incisions 6 is forced outwardly into horizontal position to provide a plurality of air veins or wings 7 and when the can is laid upon its edge on a pavement, a gust of wind will strike the veins or wings 7 at opposite sides of the'can, and cause the same to roll.
The said sections 55 of the can are provided centrally with an opening 8, in order that the inwardly bent ends of the side legs 9-9 of a conventional yoked handle 10 may be arranged therein, so that when the same is held in position to present the wings to the force of the wind, the can will rotate somewhat simulating the action of a pinwheel.
In view of the foregoing description when considered in conjunction with the .accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided a novel, and simple can construction that may be used as a toy after the contents have been removed therefrom, and even though I'have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of a certain structural formation, it is nevertheless to be understood that some changes may be made therein, Without affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A can of the character described comprising a pair of compleinental, interfitting circular sections having centrally disposed openings therein and further having a series of spaced, substantially V-shaped radiating incisions disposed concentrically with the openings, the material within each of the V- shaped incisions adapted to be bent outwardly substantially at right angles to its respective section in a manner to provide outwardly extending wings, the centrally disposed openings adapted for thereception of a holding device;
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOSEPH SALMI.
