DEVICE FOR USE IN ADJUSTING FOOT BRAKES.

This invention relates to a device for use in adjusting the foot brakes of motor vehicles, such as automobiles, or the like, and the object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which holds the foot pedal in proper position while tightening the nuts on the springs of the brakes.
A further object of. the invention is the provision of a device of the character specified which is adjustablefor use with various types of cars, which is of simple and durable construction, reliable and effective in operation, and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device embodying the present invention in use on an automobile,

Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the device embodying the present invention includes a longitudinally extensible or adjustable standard, designated generally at 1, and made up of an externally threaded rod 2 and a sleeve 3 having a nut 4 suitably fixed therein and engaged with the threads of the screw. By a relative turning movement of the screw and sleeve the length of the standard may be varied.
Means is provided on one end of the standard which is adapted to grip and en gage the foot pedal of the automobile or motor vehicle on which the device is used, and this means preferably comprises a yoke 5 having pointed or bev'eledends 6. The yoke 5 is integrally formed with or suitably connected to the rod 2.
At the opposite end of the standard from the yoke 5 a tubular jaw 7 is provided and has a V-shaped seat 8 at its outer end designed to engage the instrument board of the motor vehicle with which the device is used. Means is provided for swiveling the jaw 7 on the sleeve 3 and preferably comprises a bushing 9 fitted and held in the adjacent end of the sleeve 3 and internally threaded so as to be adapted to be engaged with the threads of a screw 10, the shank of which extends through an opening in the jaw 7 and the head of which is engaged with the jaw to prevent the same from being displaced axially.
In order that the instrument board may be engaged even though the distance between the board and the foot pedal be less than the length of the standard in its shortest adjustment, a hook, designated generally at 11, is provided and has a hub 12 slidably and rotatably fitted on the sleeve 3. The bill of the hook, designated at 13, extends laterally from the hub. The hub 12 of the hook rests on a collar 14: adjustable along the sleeve and held in adjusted position by a set screw 15. r
The hook 11 as well as the jaw 7 provides means on the standard adapted for engagement with the instrument board of the vehicle.
In the use of the device it is adjusted so as to present the desired length of the standard. The jaw 7 or the hook 11 is then en gaged with the instrument board. In the use shown in Fig.1, the jaw 7 is engaged with the instrument board. The foot pedal meat:
of the automobile, designated at F, is then depressed further than necessary to permit the yoke 5 to be positioned to engage the same in the proper adjustment. With the yoke 5 engaged with the foot pedal F and the jaw 7 or book 11 engaged with the instrument board and the standard adjusted to the proper length the foot brake is held in proper position topermit the nuts to be tightened up on the springs of the brake during the adjustment of the brakes.
If the type of machine is such that the standard or its hook may not be engaged with the instrument board, an abutment bar, designated generally at20, is shown in Fig ures 4 and 5, may be employed, the abut-- ment bar being clamped to the steering column and affording an abutment for the upper end of the standard. The abutment bar is shown as an integral clamping member 21 which co-acts with a movable clamping member 22, the clamping members 21 and 22 being urged into clamping engagement with the steering column by meansof a clamping nut and bolt 23. The, form shown in Figures 4 and 5 is identical with that shown in Figs. 1 to 3 except-that the jaw 7 has its seat 8 engaged with the abutmentbar 20 instead of with the instrument board.
WVe claim:
1. A device for use in adjusting foot" brakes of motor vehicles and comprising a longitudinally adjustable standard, means on one end of the standard engageable with the foot brake pedal to hold the same in depressed position, and means on the standard engageable with the instrument board, said last-mentioned means being freely shiftable angularly while held against lengthwise movement relative to the standard.
2; A device for use in adjusting the foot brakes of motor vehicles comprising a longitudinally adjustable standard, means on one end of the standard engageable with the foot brake pedal to hold the same in depressed position, atubular jaw having a V-shaped seat designed for engagement with the instrument board of the vehicle, and means for swiveling the jaw on the standard.

'A device for use in adjusting the foot brakes of motor vehicles comprising a longitudinally adjustable standard, means on one end of the standard engageable with the foot brake pedalvto hold the samein depressed position, a hook rotatably fitted on the standard, a collar fitted on the standard and on which the hook rests, and means for securing the collar in any adjustment on the standard. 7 i
