a citizen of the United States, residing at The ordinary hack saw handle is rigid with a the frame, and for this reason is unsatisfactory for certa n classes of work, where it is desirable that the handle shall have capacity for adjustment arcually of the frame and shall be capable of being locked in any desired position within the limits of its arcual travel, thus adapting the hack saw for use in anyof a variety of positions in which the mechanic may have to place himself in order to get at the work. Such a construction is particularly useful in the electrical garage and plumbing trades, where the mechanic is frequently required to saw a piece of work while standing or lying beneath it, the capacity of the handle for arcual adjustment relative to the frame permitting the handle to be readily swung to and reliably locked in a natural efficient position.
To the end therefore of providing an adjustable handle hack saw frame which will be of the proper design to permit connnerrial manufacture at a reasonable cost and will'be simple and reliable of operation, I have devised my present invention.
According to it, the-back or coupling for the alined sections of the adjustable hack saw frame is extended rearwardly beyond the rear blade clamping stud of the frame and carries a relatively stationary toothed locking elen'lentwith which cooperates a relatively movable locking clen'lent carried by the pivot stud for the handle or grip member proper of the frame. The movable looking element is adapted to be forced into locking engagement with the stationary locking element by tightening the handle on the screw threads of said pivot stud and is released from said locking engagement by loosening saidhandle. The pivotal con nection of the handle with the frame permits the handle to be swung through an arc of approximately 180 relative to the hack saw frame, and the handle may be locked in any desired position of adjustment within the range of its pivotal travel.
The construction, manner of assembling. and operation of my adjustable handle hacl; saw frame, together wi h a selected einbodh ment which well illustrates the principles involved, are described and shown in the accompanying specification and drawings, and the characteristic features of novelty are particularly pointed out in the appended claims. I have indicated at l and 2 the adjustable and stationary sections, respectively, of a U-shaped hack saw frame of standard type, and at 3 a channeled backing or coupling member which is riveted at 4r to the stationary section 2 of the hack saw frame and within which the adjustable section 1 of said frame is slidably enclosed. The mom-- ber is extended rearwardlybeyond the frame section 2 and at its rear end has fixed therein a stationary locking member 5 which as here shown, is in the form of a pair of duplicate corrugated locking discs riveted at6 to the member 3 and having a circular series of locking teeth 7 exposed beyond the rear end of said member. The rear end. of the li'lGlllllQl' 3 is rounded to permit the handle pivot stud S, which is pivoted thereto at 9, to swing freely through an arc of approximately 180.
The upper end of the handle stud 8 is forked to straddle the rear end of the member 3 and below said fork extends as a reduced, threaded stem 10 to which is applied a movable ferrule 11 carrying a locking element, here shown as a roll 12. The roll 12 plays in an elongated slot 13 formed in the forked upper end of the handle stud 8, towards and away from the stationary locking element 5.
In assembling, the roll 12 is lodged in the slot 13 with its ends projecting slightly therebeyond, and the ferrule 11 is forced over said projecting ends with a driving fit. The roll 12 and ferrule 11 are thus locked together to move as one.
The threaded stem 10 of the handle stud engages a series of screw threads formed interiorly of an inserted steel nut 15 which is pinned or otherwise fixed within the bore of a handle 16. As here shown, the nut 15 is disposed in the space between the upper end of the handle 16 and the lower face of the ferrule 11 and has a shank 15 depending into the bore of said handle. Preferably, this shank is exteriorly knurled longitudi nally thereof to prevent it from becoming loose after constant turning.
The handle may be locked in the selected position of adjustment to which it has been swung relative to the hack saw frame by rotating the handle 16 inwardly along the threads 10 of the handle stud until the nut 15 engages and moves the ferrule 11 inwardly to thereby force the roll 12 into engagement with the teeth of the stationary locking disc 5. The handle is released to permit it to be swung to a different position by backing it outwardly along the handle stud 8 until the nut 15 separates from the ferrule 11, whereupon said ferrule and with it the roll 12 disengages from the teeth of said disc 5.
lVhile I have shown and described my invention in its adaptation to a hack saw frame in which capacity it is of immediate practical value, my adjustable handle connection obviously may be embodied in other forms of tools and hence I do not limit myself to this particular adaptation, but reserve the right to utilize the principles involved in any form where they will satisfactorily fulfill the intended purposes. Similarly minor modifications in the design and relation of operating parts may also be made within the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
hat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a tubular frame member, a stationary locking element en closed in the rear end of said frame member, a handle stud pivoted to said frame member and forked at its inner end to straddle said locking element and below said fork eXtend ing as a reduced threaded stem, a ferrule mounted to move longitudinally along said handle stud towards and from said stationary locking element, a movable locking element carried by said ferrule and guided on said handle stud, and a handle adjustable longitudinally along said handle stud below said ferrule and engaging said ferrule when moved inwardly along said stud, whereby to carry said movable locking element into engagement with said stationary locking ele ment.
2. In combination with a tubular frame member, a stationary locking element onclosed in the rear end of said frame member, provided with a circular series of teeth, a handle stud pivoted to said frame member and forked at its inner end to straddle said locking element, said fork having an elongated slot therein and below said slot extending as a threaded stem, a ferrule mounted to move longitudinally along said handle stud towards and from said stationary locking element, a movable locking element mounted to move with said ferrule transversely thereof and guided in said slot of the handle. stud, and a handle adjustable longitudinally along said stud below said ferrule and engaging said ferrule when moved inwardly along said stud whereby to carry said movable locking element into engagement with said stationary locking ele ment.
3. An adjustable handle hack saw frame, comprising a tubular back for the separable sections of the hack saw frame, a corrugated locking disc enclosed in the rear end of said back, a handle stud pivoted to the rear end of said backing and straddling said locking disc, a handle adjustable on said handle stud, and a movable locking roll interposed between said handle and said locking disc and movable into engagement with the teeth of said disc when the handle is ad justed inwardly along said handle stud.
