Description

Aug. 10 1926. 1 ,595,395
J. H. HERBENER FLAG Filed Oct. 16. @925 Patented Aug. 10, 1926.
sire stares JOHN H. HERBENER, DIE NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
FLAG. 7
Application filed. October My invention relates to flags.
An important object of the invention is to provide simple and reliable means for se curing the flag to its staff. As is well known, signal flags are extensively used upon railroads or the like.
These fla s are ordinarily formed of a section of 0th, which is tacked to the stick or staff. Flags are frequently lost from their staffs by pulling from the tacks, and are frequently destroyed by this means. Further, considerable difiiculty is frequently encountered in securing flags to their staffs,
tacks and hammers are not always availa le.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a flag which is particularly well adapted as a signal flag for railway use while not necessarily restricted to this use. The flag embodies a slipover head or hem, which is view of a flag showing the tying string,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the same, showing the string tied upon the stafi,
Figure 4; is an end elevation of the flag,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of tying means, and
Figure 6 is a similar view of modified form of tying means.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration are shown preferred embodiments of my invention, attention being called first to Figures 1 to 6, inclusive, the
a further numeral 10 designates a flag, formed of suit-' able fabric or cloth, having its inner end provided with a hem 11, constituting a slipover head or hem, adapted for insertion upon a staff or stick 12. In each form of my invention, the hem is stitched at 13 and is opened throughout the remainder of its transverse area, and it ends are open;
15, 1925. Serial No. 62,753.
In Figures 1 to 4:, inclusive, the numeral 14 designates flexible tying elements or strings, which are passed through the side walls of the hem, preferably by means of a needle, as shown at 15. in the middle, for producing a knot '16, and the ends of the string are passed outwardly through the side walls of the hem. ,The points 15 are preferably at or near the central longitudinal axis of the hem. The ends of the tying strings 14 are tied into knots 17 which prevent these ends from being drawn inwardly through the material of the hem while the central knot 16 prevents the This string is tied tying string from being shifted long1tud1- nally to any considerable extent. I have shownthree of these tying strings 14, two at the ends of the flag and one near the intermediate portion. While this is the preferred arrangement, the invention is in no sense restricted to this arrangement, as satisfactory results my be obtained by employing one or more of the tying strings.
As clearly shown in Figures 1, 3, and 4:,
when the slip-over hem 11 is placed upon 89 the staff 12, the inner portion of the tying element passes about the inner side of the staff, while the ends of the tying element are passed about the outer side of the stafi andsecurely tied thereto, as indicated at 18. 35
The hem may thus be securely clamped to the staff by means of the tying element with out crushing or rumpling the forward portion of the hem. The tying element permits of the use of a staff of any suitable size 90 which will enter the slip-over hem.
In Figure 5, I have shown a slight modification of tying string, which is designated by the numeral 19, and used in place of the tying string 14;. This tying string passed through the side walls ofthe slipover hem in identically the same position, while the intermediate knot 16 is dispensed with, but the ends of the tying string have knots 20 which prevent the tying string being separated from the hem. Thisconstruction permits of the longitudinal adjustment of the tying string, so that one end may be longer than the other if preferred,
In Figure 6, I have shown a further modification of tying string, which is designated by the numeral 21. This tying string is passed through the side walls of the slipover head or hem 11, but is stitched or sewed f e s de wall, a irdipated 22. hile it 3-9 is passed through the opposite side wall, as shown at 23. The stitching 22 prevents the longitudinal displacement of the tying element. The ends of the string 21 are preferably tied into knots 24, though the knot at 2% may be dispensed with.
In view of the foregoing description it is thought that no further explanation is necessary.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention hereinshown and described are to be. taken as preferred examples of the same and various changes may be resorted to in the shape, size and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A flag having a slip-over hem for insertion upon a stafi, and a i'QXlblB tying element permanently carried by the flag to tie the hem upon the staff.
2. A flag having a slip-over hem for insertion upon a staff, anda flexible tying element permanently attached to the hem to tie the same upon the staff.
3. A flag having a slip-over hem for insertion upon a staff, and a flexible tying eiement passing through the side walls of the hem and adapted to tie the hem upon the staff. a
' d. A flag having a slip-over hem for insertion upon a staff, and a flexible tying element carried by the hem and passing through the opposite side walls thereof, said tying element having means to prevent the same from being removed from the hem.
5. A flag having a slip-over hem for insertion upon a staff, and a flexible tying element passing through the side walls of the hem and provided at its ends with knots.
6. A flag having a slip-over hem for inrtion upon a staff, and a flexible tying elementpassing through the side walls of the hem, said flexible tying element being provided between its ends with means to prevent the undue longitudinal displacement of the tying element, said tying element having knots fo med in itsends. v
, 7. A fla having a slip-over hem for insertion upon a stafi, and a tying element passed through the side wallsof the hem, one end portion of the tyingelement being stitched to the adjacent side Wall and the other portion passed through the same, such other portion being provided at its end with a fact. i
8. A flag havinga slip-overhem for insertion upon a staff, and means to bind the hem to the staff.
9. A flag having a SliP-OVGfllBlIl for insertion upon a staff, and a tying element for securing the hem upon the staff.
10. A flag having a slip-over hem for insertion upon a staff, and tying element passed through the side walls of the hem, one end portion of the tying element being stitched to the adjacent side wall.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
JOHN H. HERBENER.
