UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR HESS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF T0 SAMUEL 'L. MARSH, 033 LOS ANGELES,
CALIFORNIA.
WASTE DRAIN.
Application filed March 16, 1925. Serial No. 15,854.
This invention relates to a waste drain for insertion in floors, roofs, and like places, It is especially serviceable in floors which are formed of plastic compositions, such cement, concrete and the like, and wherein the drain is embedded. The liquid being drained will in many instances lcal: between the strainer head and the floor material. This leakage has been diverteo into the drain outlet by providing a pan or basin outstanding from the body and seepage hole; to direct the leakage through the drain head into the drain outlet, These seepage holes are subject to clogging and should therefore be accessible for cleaning. The primary object of this invention is to provide a structure of the character described having a removable strainer head with seepage holes therein. Another object of this invention is to provide an adjustable strainer head to accommodate the structure to different thicknesses of floor and roof slabs.
These objects are accomplished by means of the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a complete drain secured to a flashing. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, a portion of the strainer head being broken away to show the construction of the basin; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through a fragment of the basin showing the head in elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the base comprises an outlet or coupling portion 5 internally threaded for connection to the drain pipes. The basin portion 6 has at the upper edge an outwardly extending pan 7 provided at its outer edge with a rim 8. The rim is provided with a fiat internal wall adjacent the edge as inclicated by 9. On the side walls of the basin are supporting lugs 10 having pointed upper ends. Spanning the basin is a bridge 11 having a threaded bore at the center thereof to receive a screw.
The strainer head comprises an upper or floor wall 12 perforated to form a grating. At the center is a screw opening counterbored so that the head of a screw may rest therein, The wall 12 is intended to be set flush with the floor or roof level. The side wall of the head forms a cylindrical surface of such external diameter that it slips within the basin. The lower edge of the wall 13 is undulated being formed with inclines 14; of substantially the same shape, these inclines having notches 15 correspondingly located. The number of inclined portions are the same as the number of lugs, there being one lug for each inclined portion. At the junctures of the inclined sections of the edges slits 16 may be formed to serve as seep holes. in any other convenient location in thewall 13. The shape of the head is preferably made tapering with the larger diameter at the top, so that the head may be removed from the slab in which it is set. the drain in position, the head is turned so that it rests upon the lugs 10 with the wall 12 flush with the floor level. It is then looked in this position by means of screw 16 which is inserted through the head and engaged with the bridge 11. It is obvious that the strainer head may be removed for cleaning without removal of the basin 10 by loosening screw 16 and lifting the head. This is to permit cleaning of the seepage holes.
A waste flashing 17 is shown secured to the pan. This flashing is cut so that it may be placed over the drain with the inner edge within the pan. split is indicated by 19 and is provided with cars 20 at the split portion having right and left hand threaded openings in which a screw 21 is disposed, The ring is 'ex pansible so that by turning the screw 21 it will be caused to tightly engage the edge of the flashing and be pressed against the rim 8.
What I claim is:
1. A drain head comprising a base having an outlet, a waste pan extending outwardly therefrom, a strainer head having a sub stantially cylindrical outer wall, said head being formed externally with a slight taper converging toward the bottom, said head being disposed over said outlet, the lower edge of said head being formed with notches disposed. at different positions axially, and supporting lugs on said base disposed so that they may be engaged with said edge and support said head.
2. A drain comprising a base having a basin with vertical cylindrical side walls and a waste pan at the top extending outwardly, a strainer head having all of its These seep holes may be disposed $1 In placing A flashing ring which is outer side wall substantially cylindrical and arranged to telescopically set Within said basin, said head having its external side wall surface formed with a slight taper converging toward the bottom, said head having seepage openings extending through said walls and openings above the juncture of said basin and for communication of said pan and said basin, and means to support said head within said base at adjustable heights.
3. A drain comprising a base having a basin with vertical cylindrical side walls and a waste pan at the top extending outwardly, a strainer head having asub'st-antially cylindrical outer wall arranged to telescopically set within said basin, said head being formed externally with a slight taper eonverging toward the bottom, said head having seepage openings extending through said wall and opening above the juncture of said basin and pan for communication of said pan and said basin, the lower edge oi said head being formed with undulations, and supporting lugs on the inner Wall of said basin disposed to engage the lower edge of said head.
4. A drain comprising a base'having a basin with vertical cylindrical side walls and a waste pan at the top extending outwardly, a strainer head having a sulbstantially cylindrical outer wall arranged to telescopically set within said basin, said head having seepage openings extending through said wall and opening above the juncture of said basin and pan for communication of said pan and said basin, the lower edge of said head being formed with undulations, and supporting lugs on the inner wall of said basin disposed to engage the lower edge of said head, In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this &th
day of Mar ch, 1925.
