To all whom' ztfma-y: concern: J
Be itk'nown that LGHARLES N.- WVA'rsoN, a citizen of the United states andza resident of St; Joseph, inthecounty 0f Buchanan I andiState of Missouri; have invented n certainnew and i'iseful'lmprovement in HairlVaving Instruments;of'which the r is a specification;
' hair waving instruments;
One of the-objects of my invention is-to provide a novel hair waving'ins trument' with which waves may be made Which-will lie flat upon the head. I
waves may be simultaneously made.
Still another object of my invention is;
' or fingers with the heated-parts of: the instrumenti I I I I I A further object of my invention .is -=to provide a novel'instrument of the 'kind described,Which is-simple, cheap,1durable, not
liable to getout of'order, which is easilyand quickly operated, and which is eflicient in operation;
hereinafter fully described and claimed-.
In 1 the accompanying drawings,- which. il-
lustrate the invention, 1
'Fig. 1 is: a side elevation of my improved 'Wavmg lnstrument, shown partly broken.

Fig; 2' is across section: onthe line 2-2:;
il ar' parts: in the different viewsif trough}: shaped sheet metal body 1;v from one end of'which extends: downwardly obliquely atubular extension 21on whiehsisfastened a 'handle3, which'is ada-pted'tobe gripped by the hand of'the operatonwho, wit'lrthe-same hand grasps a'handle l on anzoperating lever'5,@wh1'chi has two armsx6', Winch-embrace" opposite sides respectively andv are pivoted.- to the extension 2 by a transverse following 1 I I 6 w1th' an: arm 9, to which is pivotedbne 'Myinventlon relates to improvements in A further object of my invention is to provide an 'IIlStIHHIQIIt WliJh=Wl11Cl1 several preferred embodiment" of my central longitudinal vertical- The. instrument is provided-with a sup portingtimember comprising a longitudinal end tOdllle extension 2? and exten'dsbetween the arms fi andbearsagainsttheunderside I ofthe handle4..- The-tension otthe spring/ ii 8 normally forces the handle l away from the .-l1andlea3. 1 1
.The lever is provided above the armsend of'a longitudinal link; 10 the other end of which is pivotedflto-a plate- 11; which'aisj respectively slidalbly fitted' in twolongi tudlnal grooves 13,- which are formed by thelongitudinal edge portions 14 0f the body-1 being upwardly and inwardly turned, s'ee--f Fig. 2. 1 a a I The supporting member isrprovided with downwardly extending hollow spaced a pa 1' tteeth, eachfof which comprises a rear metal plate=15',;which is disposed transverselyandat right angles tothe body 1; j and which ha-s" a lip 16 .fastened to the5undr side'of the body1by arivet l7'ja'n'da front plate-IS'liaV ingia central vertical channel portion*19, the

I a I a To th'elunder j'side ofthe member 12-"are- I secure-d; as witli, rivets-23la plurality offiu shaped members 24, which are disposed II transverselyand'the arms offwhich form theirengagingprongsQS arranged -inpai I I I I saidpairs beingdisPOSGd respectively -fo lesi gnate sim' ward of the tooth I plates 18; and wh'ich fexare movable toward and from the adjacent fr e tend respectivelythrough longitudinal slots-r 26 in thebody-"1 in which the fprong's 125"- 99 co -operate; to form "strands of hair into I waves The'prongs ofeach pair are-d-is posed at opposite sides-respectively of the adj ace-n1; channel portion 19, and in'their which maybe inserted between the-prongs.
and said channelportion, against said channel portion and against the remalnlng .wave form in which they are held by said teeth and prongs 25, any suitable heating means may be employed. In the drawings I have shown as such heating means a plurality ,of ordinary electrical heating elements comprising respectively insulating tubes 27 disposed respectively in the channel portions 19, and respectively encircled by resistance coils 28, the terminals of which are connected in the usual manner to conductors carried in an insulating cord 29 disposed be? tween the members land 12 and through the extension'2 and handle 3.
may be. respectively encircled by tubes 30- of insulating material,Fig's. 3 and 4, to hold- The coils 28 them from. contact with the plates "18..
To'protect the hands and the head from being burned by the heated teeth and prongs .25, I provide a guard member comprisng a housing'3l, the top of which covers the prong carrying plate 12; 'The gnard member 31 is open at the rearend and closed at itsv front end, ,the latter servingtoprotect the hands andthehead from the front prongs 25.
membersv 33 serve to part the hair. Spaces 3& are provided'between the fingers 32 and V fingers 32 and-35- are disposedperpendicular 1 the front finger 32 andthe end finger 35 of the guard member. These spacesareso disiposed as to permit strands of .hairto he slipped between the prongs 25andthehair forming plates 18, when the prongs'25are in'the non-pressing position shown in Figs, 3-and at. jv I I l I In. 'theoperation of the instrument, the
to the skull, the middle. fingers being shorter than the end fingers :to'suit .the contour of the-head of the person. The handle 4 and prongs 25 aredisposed, as shown in Fig. 3. Strands of'hair are then-drawn into the spaces 34: between theprongs 25 and plates 18, after which the hand holdin'gthe handle 3presses the handle 4 toward the handle 3,
thus moving. the plate 12 and prongs 25 rearwardly, so that the strands of hair are respectively pressed by the prongs 25 and the front sides ofthetooth plates 18, thereby being formed into waves. The handle 4: ishel-d in the pressing position, for a short,
' been completed.
time, to enable the heated members which engage the hair to permanently set the pressed hair in the wavelikeform, and in a so that manner such that it will lie flat on thehead after the hair has beenreleased.
' When the handle tisi released, the spring scribed, is re eate :l. Thesewoperations are repeated until the waving of the hair has The transverse guard members- 33 prevent hair getting into the spaces '34 which are which'the hair should not be drawn.
",1 By having the fingers arranged so as be perpendicularto the head, when the hair is drawn into the-spaces3 l, the :waves formed,
after being released, will lie flat ,againstthe sired, and-which it is difficult or impossible to obtain with the usual types of wave forming instruments.
I do not limit my invention to the struc ture shown and described, as many lmodifi-- cations, within the scope'of the. appended claims, maybe made without departing from g the spirit of my invention; a The guard member is provided with guard What'I claim is 1. In a hair waving i'strument, asa
distant from the roots of the hair, and into,
' head, a disposition of them that is much 'deto form hair in a Wave, 'p
