Description
N. C. SPRHQGER LOCK Filed Nov 1924 2135 Iii INV ENTER Patented Mar. 9, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
WILLIAM CHARLES SPRINGER, OF BELLEVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA.
' LOCK.
Application filed November 28, 1924. Serial N 0. 752,630.
To all whom it mag concern:
sive construction of the latch operating mechanism and, where a dead bolt'is employed in the lock, to utilize a single spring for the tumbler of the dead bolt and for the return of the latch operating mechanism to normal position.
I attain my objects by means of the con+ structions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Eig. 1 is a side elevation of a'lock constructed in accordance with my invention with the detachable side plate removed; and
Fig. 2 a side elevation of the latch bolt and its operating mechanism looking downward.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
The lock casing, as usual, comprises a stationary pla e 1 provided with the integral rim .2 and the face plate 3, the latter being formed with the usual apertures for the passage of the latch bolt 4 and dead bolt 0. and a recess 7 in its rearend adapted 'to partly receive the coil spring 8 which bears against the adjacent part of the rim 2. This spring tends to maintain the latch bolt in its normally extended position. 9 is the spindle hub rotatably mounted as "usual in the fixed side plat-e 1 and the removable side plate 10 of the lock casing. The hub is provided with the usual projections 11 for oper- ,ating the latch. 12 is the latch lever, which is fulcrumed intermediate its ends onthe stump 13 and is provided with a pin 1 proj ecting into the slot 6 of the latch bolt. Normally the pin lies at the rear end of the slot 6 so that the latch bolt is free to recede when the bevelled end of the latch contacts with a keeper when the door to which the lock is connected is closed. The end of the latch lever opposite the pin 14 is engaged by a link 15 which is also engaged by one of The latch bolt is formed witha slot 6- the hub projections ,11. The latch lever is provided with a third arm 16 with which engages the lower hub projection 11. Thus, when the hub is rotated in one direction, the latch lever is rockedto throw back the latch by the direct engagement of the hub with the latch lever and when the hub is rotated in the opposite direction, the latch lever is rocked through the medium of the link 15.
The link 15 is preferably constructed as follows. Theend 17 underlies the upper end of the latch lever '12, which is rabb-eted tofit over this end. latch lever underlies the adjacent hub prejection 11 also rabbeted to overlie this end. Shoulders 18 and 19 are formed on the link for engagement by the latch lever and hub projection respectively. A third shoulder 20 is preferably formed on the link, the end of the latch lever lying between the shoulders 18 and 20 sothat the link will always follow the movements of the latch lever in either direction. The link also lies between the adjacent part of the rim 2 and the hub 9." vVith this arrangement no specially constructed guide is necessary for the link. As the latch'bolt has a pin and slot engagement with the latch lever, no other guide or support is necessary for the rear end of the latch bolt. The coil spring 8 is made only of sufiicient strength toreturn the latch bolt to its normal position after it has been pushed back by engagement wlthth-e keeper as herembefore referred to, and it is not desirable that it be made of sufficient strength to also turn the latch lever and spindle hub to their normal positions. For this purpose I provide an other spring which serves also the purpose of tending to maintain the tumbler of the dead bolt in its normal position. The dead bolt is formed with a slot 21 through which extends the stump 22 which thus forms a guide for the bolt. On this stump is fulcrumed the tumbler 23 which, as usual, is provided with the projection 24 adapted to lie on either side of the projection 25 on the dead bolt, so that thetumbler serves to lock the dead bolt either in its extended or retracted position. A projection 26 is also formed on the tumbler and a projection 27 on the latch lever. A bent spring 28 engages these projections and. the stump 22. This spring thus serves the dual purpose hereinbefore referred to.
The other end of the i guided From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a very simple and inexpensive lock, since only two stumps are required and no special guides or other fittings for the parts of the lock.
What I claim is 1. In a lock the combination of a casingf a latch bolt slidable in the lock casing; a
spindle hub journalled in the lock casing, provided with latch lever actuating pro ections; a latch lever fulcrumed intermediate 7 of its ends; a pivotal connection between one end of the lever and the latch bolt; a sliding link forming an operating connection be tween the opposite end of said lever and one of the hub projections; and an arm 011 said lever adapted for engagement by the other hub projection.
2. In a lock the combination ofa casing having front plate apertured forthe pas sage of a latch bolt; a spindle hub j ournalled in the casing provided with latch lever ongaging projections; a latch lever fulcrumed intermediate of its ends; a pivotal connec-i tion between one end of the latch lever and therlatch bolt, said connection forming the sole support for the rear end of the latch bolt; a sliding link forming an operating connection between the opposite end of said lever and one of the hub pro ections; and an arm on said lever adapted for engagement by the other hub projection.
23. In a lock thecoinbination of a casing;
a latch bolt slidable in the casing; a latch lever fulcrumedintermediate of its ends; a
engaged by one of the hub projections; and a sliding link having shoulders engaging respectively the other liub projection and another arm of the latch lever.
5. In arlock thecoin'bination of a casing; a spindle hub journalled therein provided with latch lever engaging'projectlons; a
latchlever fulcru ned in the casing directly engaged by one of the hub projections; and
a sliding link having shoulders spaced 1nwardly from its endsengaging respectively theother hub projection and another arm of the latch lever, said latch lever and hub projection being rabbeted to overlie the ends of vthe link.
6. In a lock the combination of acasing; a splndle hub ournalled there n provided with latch lever engaging projections; a latch lever fulcrurned in the casing directly engaged by one of the hub projections; a slid ng link having shoulders spaced inwardly from its ends engagingrespectively the other hub'projection and another arm of the latch lever, said latch lever and hub projection being rabbeted ito'overlie the ends of the link; and aflflange on the casing parallel to sa d l nk retain ng it impos tion relative to the hub and latch lever.
7. :Iiia lock the combination of a stump;
a latch lever 'fulcruined on the stnnip; a
dead bolt lock tumbler; alatch bolt posifitioned betweenthe atoresaidstuinp and the tumbler and havinga pin-and-slot connection with the latch lever; a stump on which said tumbler is fulcrnined; bent spring engaging the last mentioned stuinp and having one end engagingthe tumbler and the other end extended.acrosslthe latch bolt and engaged with the latch lever; and ,a' second spring engaging the latch bolt and a stationary part tendingtoe end the said latch bolt, whereby tlielatchbolt' may moveback againstspring pressurewithout moving the October, 192%}.
