F. W. MALDEIS.
Harness-Saddles.

Witnesses a/rrvefiwe/w UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
FRIEDRICH W. MALDEIS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-SADDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.157,208, dated November 24, 1874; application filed October 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH W. MAL- DEIs, of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Harness; and I hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a full specification of the same.
My invention relates more especially to that part of a harness known as the saddle, restin g,-when in position, just back of the horses shoulder; and consists in a peculiar formation of the harnesssaddle, and providing it with a metallic brace or stiffening to sustain it in shape and position, whereby the saddle is prevented from bearing against the horses shoulder, and the soreness commonly resulting therefrom is avoided.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention and forms a part of the specification herein, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved saddle. Fig. 2 represents the under side of the same, the padding being removed.
In the drawing referred to, A designates the saddle-tree, and 'B the check-hook. G indicates the terrets or rings through which the reins pass, the same being mounted on the jockeys, which are marked 0; D, the metallic plates, and E an iron plate forming the foundation of the tree, check-hook, and terrets, to which these parts are secured by bolts and nuts. F designates the back-band, and g a loop, through which it passes downward.
As shown in the drawing, Fig. 1, that part of the harnesssaddle extending downward on each side from the tree is formed to incline forward for a short distance, and curving somewhat at :0. Just below the loop 9 it recodes, and the extension orstrap connects with the belly-band below at the same point as when such part is made straight, so that when the saddle is in position the upper part thereof about the tree is caused to slightly incline backward, and is prevented from bearing heavily against the shoulder of the animal in harness. I
To strengthen the saddle and sustain it in sh ape, and the terrets in the relative positions ofthose parts, when formed and constructed as above stated, each side of the saddle is provided with the metallic plate I), placed underneath, as shown, one end of said plate being fastened to the saddle by a rivet covered by the loop g, and the other end being held at s between the iron plate or frame E and the upper leather, the leather packing h being placed between the plates D and E, and the bolt extending from the terret G passing through the whole.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A harness-saddle having the curved con- 'struction shown in Fig. 1, and provided with the metallic plates D D and E, fastenings at g and s, and leather packing h, as and for the purposes specified. v
In testimony whereof I have subscribed my name hereto in the presence of two witnesses.
FRIEDRICH W. MALDEIS.
