UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' ,IJE UEL MORGAN DAVIS, or LONDON, ENGLAND.
TOOTHBRUSH.
Application filed Itovember 29, 1924; Serial No. 752,851.
To all whom it mag comm nt Be it known thatI, LEMUEL MORGAN DAVIS, a citizen of the United States of America, of 10 Prima Road, Stockwell, London, S. W. 9, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothbrushes, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to. tooth-brushes,
and has for its primary object to enable the brush head to. be removed from the handle" portion at will, and changed or renewed as may be desired.
For. this purpose, according to the invention, the stock'portionof the brush, 1. e. that portion in which the brush head is fixed, is
made detachable from -.the handle-portion and fits slidably in a channelled socket or trough forming a virtual continuation of.
the-length ofthe handle; the stock, which j adapted tobe slid into position against a stop by a movement lengthwise: of the socket, being retained therein by a locking device capable of disengagement at will.
One form of theinvention isillustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, whereinFigure 1, is-a side elevation, partly in section, of the front portion ofthe brush with the brush-head (which carries 'the' bristles)- of the handle being shewn, and the remainlocked in position, only theadjacent part ing part being broken off for the sake of convenience. Figure 2 is a similar view, the brush-head being shewn as partly withdrawn from, or partly inserted in, position. Figure 3'is a face view of the brush-head and bristles. Figure L is a cross section on the line 1t of Figure 1. Figure 5 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the locking device, drawn to a larger scale, and Figure 6 is a top plan view ofthe same.
Referring to the drawings, the handle 11 of the tooth-brush is provided with a forward continuation in the form of a laterallyflanged, fiat-bottomed trough 12 of thin material; the flange 13 at each side of the trough being carried round the forward end of the trough as at 14 so as to constitute a stop for determining the position of the brush-head 15. Each lateral flange 13 is. inwardly re-curved (see Figure 4) to fit over the correspondingly rounded lateral edge 16 of the brush-head 15; the end flange 14: being similarly recurved to. fit over the rounded front terminal edge 17 of the head; whilst the head itself has a flatback adapted surface of the brusliliead 15.
to slide over and lit snugly against the bot tom of the trough 12. In order to ensure both a tight fit and also easy retraction of the head 15', the lateral edges 16, 16 of the {head preferably converge slightly, in the forward direction, as shewn in Figure 3.
The locking device for retaining the brushhead 15 in position is preferably constituted by a stud 18 (Figures 5 and 6)' which passes through, and is adapted both to turn and to slide in, a hole in the handle 11 (or in the bottom of the trough) immediately beyond the rear end of the head; this stud having at its outer end a thin or flatly-domed head 19 adapted to contact with the back of the trough or handle without proyecting appreciably from the surface thereof, and at its inner end a radial and slightly elastic 11111 201adapted to overlie the adjacent end of the brush-head and formed with a hooked or nibbedv extremity 21 adapted to snap into engagement with a notch or depression 22 on the upper or front \Vhen the brusli-head is to be with-drawn from its position, the stud 18 isturned so as to free the hooked. or nibbed extremity 21 of the arm 20 from the notch 22, and is then pushed or allowed to drop. through the hole until the arm 20 lies in a recess 23 provided for the purpose in the surface of the handle 11; whereupon the brush-head 15 can be freely slid out of the trough 12, with the bottom of which the upper surface of the radial arm 20 then lies flush (see Figure 2). The notch 22 may have a leading-in groove (not shewn) to facilitate the engagement and disengagement of the hook or nib 21 from the notch. In order to economize space, the
stud may be received in a half-round notch 24c at the adjacent end o'fthe' brush-head15.
whereof the conjoint span is greater than the diameter of the upper end of the hole;
In order to avoid risk of an edge of the head 19 of the stud, when in its normal or looking position (Figure 1), projecting 11evond 1111 rear 51112 111 1 1 111 the handle 11 11nd trough 1.2 in 511111 1111111111 :15 to permit of the 11111111 1!) catching against the iipe or gums of 1111 user, the head it) is preterahly received, as shown, in 11 1'11151; 213 (Figure 5 3) formed on the back of the handle by 11 rounded 111111111111 1 1111111111 2? which pro jeets 11"111111 said back as indicated.
