IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-LAMPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,007, dated November 17, 1874; application Afiled July 8, 1874.

To all 'whom fit may concern:

Be it known that we, GHAELEs F. JACOB- sEN and ALoIs BURGER, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Lamps, of which the following is a specification:

Our invention relates to that class of streetlamps in which the glass portion of the lamp is made with a hinged top or upper part, as`

shown, for instance, in our Letters Patent No. 139,394, dated May 27, 1873.

In said patented lamp, however, the top was hinged to the lower portion by a horizontal hinge, so that, in opening the lamp in order to clean it, or for other purposes, the top was lifted and turned over. rlhis mode of hinging we have found disadvantageous, especially in the case of large lamps, and particularly those with glass domes. Such lamps are very liable to be broken when turning back the top, unless great care be taken.

In the present instance, to obviate this difculty, and at the same time preserve all the advantage of a hinged top, we unite the top with the lower portion of the lamp by a vertical hinge or pivot, on which the top will swing laterally, or in a horizontal plane, instead of moving up and down as formerly.

The accompanying drawing represents the manner in which our invention is or may be carried into effect.

` Figure 1 is an elevation of the metallic rims, one of which is applied to the upper part of the lamp, and the other to the lower part ot' the lamp, the top and body being represented by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the two rims. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of said rims.

These rims are, as just stated, applied, the one, A, to the upper edge of the lamp-body A', the other to the bottom edge of the lamptop B. They are connected with said parts in any ordinary or suitable manner. The top rim B is connected with the under rim A by a vertical pivot or hinge-pin, a, on which as an axis the rimAand lamp-top turn. The lamptop thus is removed from over the body by a lateral movement.

Any suitable latch or catch may be provided for locking the two rims together when the lamp-top is brought in position over the lamp-body.

One convenient means for this purpose is shown in the drawing, consisting of a pin or lug, b, on the one rim that enters a socket, c, formed for it at the proper point in the other rim. The pin is short, and there is sufficient play at the joint a to allow the lamp-top to be lifted far enough to disengage the pin from the socket; and to facilitate this operation, as well as to furnish a guide that will direct the pin to the socket when the top is swung into place over the top rim, we form in the upper surface of one side of the lower rim a groove or depression, d, following a curve that would be described from a as a center, with a radius equal to the distance between a and b.

The top rim is provided with a thumb-piece or handle, f, to facilitate its manipulation.

Under the arrangement above described the lamp-top can be turned to one side or the other of the lamp-body without perceptible strain on either. it is selflocking, and the two parts are very solidly united.

The lamp thus made is cheaper also, and manifestly is not so liable to be broken.

Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

l. A street-lamp in which the movable top of the glass shade is united with the body there-of by a vertical pivot or hinge, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of the two metallic rims, one on the top and the other on the body of the lamp, united by a vertical pivot or hinge, and provided with a locking-pin and socket for the same, arranged and operatin g substantially as shown and described.
